    Only the RCH-155 can fire on the move - negating enemy counter battery fire. Developed for the UK and German forces and over 50 being built for Ukraine, with several other customers evaluating.

      They're still really expensive but hopefully the price will come down. Their capabilities are awesome.

    Archer on an Oshkosh chassis….. round compatibility with US towed artillery…. Tracked platforms are likely to be out of vogue given the demonstrable need for fast shoot and scoot and that US forces have to plan for exposure to asymmetric forces and the absence of air dominance at low level.

      RCH 155 is far superior to the Archer because it can fire while moving.

      @@FacitOmniaVoluntas. Does it really matter? It would significantly affect accuracy in a negative way and the Archer can do it’s magic in less than a minute before it moves and it moves fast. I think tracked platforms are bad, as they are too slow and vulnerable.

    Instead of tinkering with a very long gun that will inherently have high wear, it’s probably the best approach to adopt an L52 gun for future M109s and wheeled SPH, seeing all the success those have had in other militaries.
    From a base platform perspective, I think the Elbit or BAE offerings would be most favorable for the US Army. Since I know nothing about the comparative abilities of the guns or artillery systems themselves, I can’t really speak anything about that.

    Don’t be surprised if there turns out to be 2 different procurements, one on tracks with a short barrel (39 cal) for the Battalion and below use cases and a second wheeled procurement with a longer barrel (56/58 cal) at Brigade and above use cases.

    • @andrewreynolds4949
      @andrewreynolds4949 6 дней назад

      An L39 barrel is horribly outdated and out ranged. The only reason they’d adopt a new tracked vehicle instead of keeping the M109 would be to introduce a new L52 gun or similar.

      F16 same, shot down easily
      US drone 100 times the price of a Chinese drone and out performed

      @ only eight but they are high value targets. I think the other howitzers are not as fast so they are less likely to move out of harms way. I saw a video showing that one radar unit used to determine where shells come from had been destroyed. Alas, I don’t remember if it was hit by a howitzer or a rocket. Either way works for me, these are good to get rid of

    The U.S. production of 155mm artillery shells has been significantly inadequate since before the war in Ukraine and hasn’t been significantly increased. As the US continues to support Israel and Ukraine, the fielding of additional U.S. artillery systems no matter the elegance of the technology seems irrelevant since the U.S. isn’t able to support more than a 90 day engagement.
