Thank you Pete for listing the picks again. Happy to see that vdgg received a mention from Mr. Alvarez last night. vdgg is an inspirational band with their current UK tour... not many bands last that long and are that prolific. There is a book with all of Mr. Hammill’s lyrics coming out later this month that I am looking forward to getting, you may want to check it out. Regards, Sal.

My top 5 will include two live albums because I was there:
5: Genesis: Selling England By The Pound
4: Rick Wakeman: Return to the Center of The Earth
3: ELP: Pictures Of An Exehibition
    2: SAGA: The Chapters Live
    1: Yes: Yessongs
I saw SAGA perform the Chapters live in Germany, a great idea to play all the chapters that the band spread out on a lot of albums in a period of 25 years.
In 1972 I saw Yes performing Yessongs in Copenhagen, and I bought the album on vinyl when it came out in 1973, the triple album has been literally played to death, and when it came out on CD I bought two copies one for my home and one in my car.

    2. Mëkanïk Dëstruktïẁ Kömmandöh (Magma)
    3. Pictures at an Exhibition (Emerson, Lake & Palmer)
    4. Initiation (Todd Rundgren)
    5. A Farewell to Kings (Rush)
(Side note: No. 1 is not easy to categorize, and No. 3 I've always treated as a studio album, even though, technically, it's a live one.)
Not necessarily 'Desert Island' - those are simply my 5 favorites, and have been for many years (Reasons and experiences, both varied and personal.) I've lived and breathed each, and they are in my DNA. They still blow my mind after all this time.
With that said, I wish I could've included the entire studio discographies of Magma, King Crimson, and Gentle Giant - can't live without those. Also, select albums from the other 'usual suspects' (well-known by most), and lesser-known artists.

As a young guy living in the North East of England, I was lucky enough to see live most of the bands you mention, before the age of stadium rock, venues were much more intimate to watch these great bands. Thanks once again to everyone who took the time to participate in both or either episode of this highly enjoyable show. A quick list of ten with a quick editorial why comment for each. Most of them move around so the ranking numbers don't mean a lot there but the number one remains always there.
    10. Hybris - Anglagard. This would be the newest since discovered it coming to SoT two years ago and going to the island might force me to pay what the CD costs. Newer music forthe ears.
    9. The Six Wives of Henry VIII -Rick Wakeman. This sort of hedges my bet and allows the pianist in me to enjoy some great piano work with a classical flair and other influences.
    8. Romantic Warrior - Return To Forever. Needing some fusion and this is tops of many possible choices.
    7. Brain Salad Surgery - Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Saw them on the tour for this album. Nothing like it anywhere else at the time and still wows me. Even enjoy the throwaway tracks.
    6. Dark Side Of The Moon - Pink Floyd. When cds first came out, this is one of the first two cds bought as my LP was worn out. Jon explained it best in his discussion.
    5. Ashes Are Burning - Renaissance. Going to need some great female vocals to prevent a cd sausage fest. Could pick any but this one just moves me.
    4. Selling England By The Pound -Genesis. My introduction to the band and the first Genesis album you could find in local record stores. Can't deny the greatness of other albums but this is the one I take.
    3. Close To The Edge - Yes. Didn't know this as prog when bought on its release. Just knew from the first time played how great it was. Saw them play it in total on the Topographic Ocean tour.
    2. Thick As A Brick - Jethro Tull. Saw them on the tour for this album and played album nonstop. Love all of it but would not be horribly disappointed either if the person packing for me slipped a Passion Play cd in the TAAB cd holder.
    1. A Wizard, A True Star - Todd Rundgren. A favorite and likely my absolute favorite album of the last almost 50 years. Still hear something new though this album can play in my head.
Thanks again, gents, for your time in doing these two shows. Highly enjoyable and, as always, some new music to investigate.

Artists mentioned the most were Genesis and Yes (9), Rush (8), Jethro Tull (7), Gentle Giant, King Crimson and Pink Floyd (6), Kansas and Return To Forever (4). For albums mentioned the most, Close To The Edge (6), Trick Of The Tail (4), Thick As A Brick, Leftoverture, Animals, Hemispheres, Relayer and Romantic Warriors (3), Scenes From A Memory, Larks Tongue in Aspic, Red and Inner Mounting Flame (2). @@jonneudorf628 It has an amazing production sound in general, the misty, dystopian sonics throughout that album render GUP an album-length Sci-Fi opera comparable to (looser conceptually ofc) the iconic track 2112. The 'geek escapism' (I don't call it that to demean it, just to identify it here) associated with Rush's music is most consistently applied on GUP, in my modest opinion. I do fully understand why those into the 'heavy metal' facet of Rush's sound were let down by the album, but I'm a big fan of that era's synthesizer music in general so prog/art rock meets synth/new wave is fucking glorious for me. Signals is my second favourite of their discography, followed by Moving Pictures, so that's where I'm at. (I'll even happily admit to really liking Jethro Tull's Under Wraps, to put things in perspective).

Love all the old 70s prog groups Camel Caravan ELP Gentle Giant etc. I still think they have the edge over later groups like Porcupine Tree for example but with prog ears I listen and find good passage's in most later and current experimental groups.

Top five is really challenging, this is where we realise no matter how we pick and order our top ten, something has to give! 5. Crime of the Century - great to see it picked on the show but feel a bit bemused at the question over Supertramp being prog - they were always considered part of prog here in the UK. I’d say EITQM is very proggy. 4. The DarkSide of the Moon, really essential desert island disc. 3. Encore Live - possibly my most played album ever - this is perfect TD with lights off and sit back. 2. Brave - Hogarth perfectly captures the darkness of abuse and mental anguish and Rothery plays stupendously and with feeling that’s rarely found. If you understand and empathise with the story, you get this album. 1. A Trick Of The Tail. First album I fell in love with, my first Genesis album, it’s perfect. The reprise of Supper’s Ready lyric at the end of Los Endos just sends shivers down my spine and was a lovely nod to PG.

    5. Mahavishnu Orchestra - The Lost Trident Sessions. Despite this being released much later, but I was born in 1998, so it didn't matter to me. Dream, Trilogy, Sister Andrea - all killer tracks. I Wonder and Steppings Tones are beautiful miniatures also. And I only recently fell in love with John's Song #2, now it's one of my favourites. No weak track whatsoever.
    4. Pink Floyd - Animals. Legendary album, really great soundscapes. And I'm a big fan of long (but not too long) tracks, so Pigs, Sheep and Dogs are the perfect triad for me.
    3. Camel - Mirage. Underrated band, but I'm with majority that this is their best work, no competition. 4 out of 5 tracks are definitely in my top10 Camel tracks, especially Nimrodel and Lady Fantasy.
    2. King Crimson - Red. Simply impeccable.
    1. Van der Graaf Generator - Godbluff. It's simply a genius album, very crafty songwriting and instrumentation, good production, PH vocal delivery, Guy's free-jazz like drumming and Banton with Jackson are not clashing with each other like in H to He or Pawn Hearts - they really complement each other in Godbluff. Arrow was the song that boosted my VdGG sympathies to a new level and it has a really sentimental meaning to me, but The Sleepwalkers at this point might be even better for me. And I must say, VdGG discography is so great, one of the most solid discographies by any prog band so I could include multiple albums by them in top10 (Pawn Hearts, Still Life, World Record etc.).

It's crazy to think that ELP got the album title " Brain Salad Surgery" from the lyrics of a Dr John song! Didn't think they would be paying attention to New Orleans funk, but apparantly they were!

This was too difficult already without including the Jazz Fusion classics, so I am not including them....1. Jethro Tull: A Passionplay 2. Genesis: Selling England by the Pound. 3. PFM: Per Un Amico 4. Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon, 5. ELP: Trilogy (today... it will be Brain Salad tomorrow), 6. Yessongs (their live versions were far more powerful) 7. Camel: Music Inspired by the Snow Goose, 8. Dungen: Ta Det Lugnt, Tio Batar, 4, or Skit i Allt !!! 9. Golden Earring's Moontan (US version) 10. Jane's Fire, Water, Earth and Air. 11. King Crimson: Red (barely edging Court of the Crimson King out). Ok that was 11, give me a month to figure out which one to take off!

Circling back around a year later, I have learned since that Dungen is considered a psych band, not Prog rock, (makes sense). I notice as time passes I am considering other choices (like why don’t I have Gentle Giants “Octopus” on the list?) My top 3 are unshakeable though.

I think Steven hit the nail on the head when talking about the influence of Genesis on most of the 80's and 90's neoprog bands - on reflection that probably caused me to not necessarily dislike, but more to put Genesis to one side ( although I have long since rehabilitated myself, Trick of the Tail and Selling England aremy favourites, and I'm not as keen on The Lamb as many people are) as I was wanting to hear other influences - which I didnt really get until hearing Transatlantic's SMPTe that for soem reason screamed Close to the Edge - of course there was also Mastermind whio channelled ELP - their second album is pretty much a re run of Tarkus.
Talking of ELP I absolutely agree with Ken about the way the production absolutely fits the music and the concept on Brin Salad Surgery. Having studied Shakespeare at school man years ago one of tehthings I rememebr about the ay he arranged his pays was that he would put a comical interlude into the play just beofre a big dramagic moment as the lightness enhanced the darkness of the tragedy to come - and I've come to see Benny the Bouncer in that way - its an amuse bouche to clean the palate between Jerusalem, Toccata and Still you turn me On and the mangificence of Karn Evil 9. I also agree that Karn Evil 9 in its entirety is perhaps the greatest long form piece of prog rock ever - and its why I have it at no 2 on my list that I set out last week, just behind Yes' Tales - I couldnt do without either of those two.

when you click the ctte lyrics We relieve the tension only to find out the master's name on genius this comes up A zen commentator came up with the modern koan: “Who is the master that makes the grass green?” If you can find that out, of course, you’re enlightened, which is well in keeping with the Siddartha theme of this song.
idk maybe that has something to the album cover's look
