My first parkrun comes to mind currently. Had been lurking online for some time and finally decided to head down to Bushy Park, and what happened to be the 18th Birthday of ParkRun. The crowds were absolutely staggering, when they asked for hands up for first timers and the support you got from complete strangers, followed by the run director saying `Welcome to this craziness, getting up for a 9am run every saturday will become the new norm for you`. Haven't looked back since :)
I'm 38, 6'4", 260 lbs. I've been on a 10k training plan after completing a 5k in 32:04 in December. Shooting for sub 1:05:00 10k.
Going to run my first marathon in April went for comfort over speed on the shoe front, and think I made the right decision after listening to this
Best of luck for April 👍
I'm 65, reasonably fit but never an out-and-out runner, and don't run more than 10k. These days, in my normal Peg 37s I average 26 minutes for 5k around the local hilly lanes. If I need a psychological boost, my Next%s will reliably take at least a minute off that. So even for a non-elite a carbon sole does make a significant difference, but I agree they are not for every day. In fact running in boots still has its place!
Yet another fantastic podcast. The chemistry between you all is perfect. Sarah. GOOD LUCK. on your marathon effort. RUN WELL X
Thank you so much!!
Enjoy your content. I’m an old (figuratively and literally) rower, cyclist but also have been running since 1977. A recent heart issue has oddly enough rekindled my terrific enjoyment of long and slow running. A comment towards the end of this podcast reminded me of a comment my old rowing coach made many years ago. We were sanding boards in the Canadian winter, and there isn’t anything colder than a Canadian boathouse in the winter, but he idly made a comment that always stuck with me. He said, “the only real value in our sport is how it draws us together as human beings”. The comment on your memorable moments reminded me of this. Keep on moving!
Sarah’s ultra in Thailand looked so fabulous that it inspired me to sign up for my first, which is in 3 weeks in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Virginia USA. As I have zero expectations about time, I am looking forward to experiencing the forest and the event more than any pace or time. I’m stoked!
Sounds epic! Let us know how you get on.
Great podcast, fab to see you all and clearly passionate about running, with lovely chemistry. Good to see Rick back, remember following him an Anna’s adventures in the early days! Most memorable run I have 2. First London 2012, I can tell my grandkids I ran the marathon at the Olympics and second at my local Park Run where a young lad called Henry wanted to give up, so ran together to the end. No idea of the time, just remember his smile at finishing!
Love the podcast. Glad it’s available as audio and on RUclips.
Good luck in Japan Sarah!
Y'all that was the best 👏👏 I love the friendship you all have and share with us here. Good luck Sarah!!! Cannot wait to hear about your race!
Nice moment hearing you mention the Varsity Match and that it still means a lot to you Andy, even after everything else you've achieved in your career.
One of the special moment for me is completing a 56km UTMB trail ultra marathon in Thailand over the past weekend 18 Feb. This come after my first ever road marathon in Dec 2022. Never before did I run further than a road marathon distance, so the ultra marathon was a scary episode for me. I was not at all confident in completing this race. But somehow I managed to complete it. That is special for me.
Great podcast. As others have said, fantastic chemistry. I am definitely in the camp of just grinding it out. Longest race to date is 80km and I was feeling pretty sick from 65km, but there was no way I was not finishing! Long distance running is a mental game and I’m a stubborn person!
Love this pod. Just invested in my first pair of super shoes, opted for the Mizuno Wave Rebellion Pro as the reviews were good, here's hoping they can help propel me to a sub 20 5k one day... Also I've just started learning about the running slow to run fast theory, for the past few years I used to run all my longer runs around 5:00 - 5:30 per km, but this week I've been on runs and aimed to just keep my heart rate ~150bpm and found my pace is around 6:30 - 7:00 per km, I think I would have been embarrassed to have run and post times on strava that slow, but now I just don't care. I can definitely feel the benefits in recovery after hard interval sessions and it also enables me to increase my weekly mileage by running at much slower paces, so it's definitely something I'll be doing more of. Keep up the good work :)
Thanks Jonny! Let us know how you get on with the Mizunos.
Great podcast again! You give each other far too much stick 😂 My most memorable race was the Boston Marathon last year. Couldn’t believe I’d finally got there after 10 marathons. Loved every minute ❤
We love each other really.
And good luck Sarah, you will smash it, foreign marathon/race, on my bucket list!! Good luck and look forward to the update and to hear which super shoes you wore!
Really enjoying the podcasts. Listened on my long run today, helped me through it.
Rick is my favorite!
Don’t. The popularity will go to his head…
@@runningchannel 😂
@@runningchannel lol
Haha he’s my favorite too.
Is this Rick saying this? 😂
YAY!! Thanks for posting these on youtube. I love watching
I was until recently all about running to target time. But i have signed up to a trail marathon and a marathon pb is not going to be possible. The freedom of not training to a pace but to complete has been so amazing. Completely altered my thinking and feeling about running in a positive way. Thier is just no pressure to achieve, no i must be on this pace etc..
Definitely a distance person. Currently training for PB137 on April 20, 2023. Love the podcast!
Hi! Thanks for the podcast, exactly the topic I’m interested in atm! :)
You're very welcome - thanks for listening.
Another great podcast, fantastic chemistry between you all. I think I'm an 'all over the place' runner. Currently training for the Rotterdam marathon, then will switch to ultra training for a 100k. But I still like trying to smash out a fast parkrun on a Saturday morning. Hope everything goes to plan in Osaka, Sarah
I did Rotterdam in 2018. I think you will really enjoy it - very flat, and really well supported. You go across the Erasmus Bridge twice if I remember rightly, and the crowds on the bridge in the direction back into the city are so close to you and loud and really gee you up. Best of luck with it!
Running the races you fancy. Perfect attitude!
Be able to run is a celebration of life! 🎉🎉🎊🎊🏃♂️🏃♀️
Distance is definitely my bag. I love the challenge of keeping going and will I physically and mentally make it to the end. I'm useless at trying to push my red line.
Love these podcasts guys! Absolutely brilliant. Informational, heart-warming, and piss-taking, at its absolute best! I'm definitely a distance runner, and I never ever thought I'd say that, or complete an ultra-marathon, so my proudest moment was a self-supported 50mile run around the M60 (not actually ON the motorway), with a mate ... best running day EVER. Smashed it. Felt like I was on top of the world at the end, and even felt like I could have carried on ... but got nothing for it (apart from plenty of Strava kudos LOL). Even had to order my own pizza and open my own beer on arrival back home 😂😂 and my mate, who rocked up an hour later? Well I bought him a tech running shirt with the Strava route map printed on it, so at least he has a little memento 😎
OMG yes, the titles in strava, it's real!!! I do it too. I think there's definitely a RC episode in this
Tasting blood is common when first starting running if you're out of shape. I had that issue when I first started, wasn't concerned about it though, assumed it was due to my lungs being pushed harder than they had been for many years, transferring oxygen to my blood and some blood leaking across the membranes of my lungs... Later reading articles about the problem that ended up being exactly what happens.
Love the podcast, keep up the great work
You still need to put the Podcast number in the title! Also, I think Rick is brilliant.
Great podcast! Any guidance on how to break in new carbon shoes prior to a marathon?
Good luck on your Ulta Sarah and looking forward to the next pod cast
Great stuff
My best run (there are many to chose from) at least the one that I can't seem to forget. A 9 k run at 1 am( too hot during the day). There are these run that it seems that all fall into place and the run becomes magical. This run was one of those. Started with challenging pace and planned to negative split it on the return. Just felt for easy and increased the pace time and time again with no effect. I was actually feeling the pace by the speed I was moving . Felt like I can run forever and at and at non limited speed. Completed in an amazing pace not tired not slammed not any thing just in seventh heaven.
We enjoy watching these podcast videos. What has happened to Anna? Is she still at the Running Channel?
You can tell truly how much you all enjoy each others company by steady dose of roasting one another!
It doesn’t feel like work 🤣
@@runningchannel that’s what makes for a great working environment!
Great podcast all of you very enjoyable keep up the good work . Good luck Sarah in Osaka hope you smash it 👍
First! Looking forward to see Andy running a marathon. Will it happen? Also, wish Sarah good luck at the upcoming marathon :)
Thanks!
Love how natural it flows. Hooked!
Thanks!
Very fun episode. Great banter :D
Very nice pocast. Thank you. I am wondering how many days you are arriving in Osaka before the race, Sarah. I find it takes me a few days to recover from the flight, the dehydration and the time difference. I hope to be running Osaka next year.
absolutely love these podcasts.
Thanks Neil!
Can we get you guys doing a cycling event please? Only because we want to see how running training affects you as doing a cycling challenge. I got the marathon and ride london back to back but ive only done running training. I now got to practice doing 100 miles for ride london.
My best feeling race was crossing the finishline of my first 20k trail race with ALOT of elevation. Tears and all!
Amy of you guys looking to do some runs at Easter? Would be great to see you in Guernsey for our Easter Running Festival. 5k and 10k road races on Good Friday and Easter Monday respectively. We have a trail run of 4.75 miles on the Saturday and a cheeky 4×1 mile relay race on Easter Sunday itself.
Great episode. 👏🏻
really enjoying these podcasts :)
Glad you enjoy it!
At 27:15 Andrew said something about having chosen the wrong sport because he loves being part of a team. I've recently only just realised that running is a team sport. It's just that everyone is on the same team. Running is the best.
Love these pod casts
Thanks Matt
For me, I am mainly running for the enjoyment of running! I’d like some nicer times and getting faster BUT if I focus too much on pace and speed I lose the joy a bit
That 48 hour record is close to running the entire Pennine Way. Staggering.
Trying to run up Helvellyn mountain in lakes for 1st time as part Helvellyn 1/2 Iron man distance race .. . More scramble.... First 3-4 miles vertical, then a short flattish section then up squirrels edge with a 20-40m drop no path just rock climbing!
Im a fan of the Saucony Speed 2's, going to pick up Speed 3 wides for my first road marathon in roughly a month. Not sure if they really count as a super shoe since Speed 3's have moved more towards a daily trainer with a nylon plate. They have much better durability than the standard super shoe as well.
Great podcast - just have to get that image of Andy in his "little" leaf running around out of my head.... ;) X
Running my first marathon in one month. Aiming for below 3:30. think i will pass on supershoes right now. Just using my normal hoka clifton 8. they are comfortable and i think i can reach my goal. Need to leave room for improvement
These podcasts are great :)
Thank you Jonathan! Make sure you subscribe so you don’t miss new episodes.
I can listen to Sarah all day long 😍
I’m 20, have never really liked running but only started my half marathon training in late September, and finished with a time of 2h16min in 90% humidity at 28 degrees celsius on the actual day on the 3rd of December . Was quite difficult because I ran on an injured ankle and a bloodied pinkie toe.
Have been training since then for a full marathon in May, as well as a half in Late April. I know it almost seems like a back-to-back, but my weekly mileage on my runs for the year so far are 72km per week, was wondering how much to taper down to by mid or early March
Thanks! (From a southeast Asian beginner runner)
You should put together a team and run either/both the Hood to Coast or Wild Rogue Relay in Oregon, USA.
Definitely attrition, especially now I'm older!
Wishing you a great time Sarah, just remember what I told you - rest all Saturday afternoon! I'll allow you a Japanese parkrun of course.
I think there must b a small round/conference table podcast & Rick must be at the table & in the future guests
I'm agreeing with Andy, I'd rather run the shorter runs fast. You don't have to worry so much about mid race fueling then too.
I hate running at top speed due mostly to injury, so I do at 20-25km slow run every Sunday. Much more fun.
On the 80/20 training, how is that divide calculated? Distance? Time spent? TSS?
That jet-lag is tough. I recently went to France from CA (basically the same time difference). I went to bed 2 hours earlier on 3 consecutive nights and took melatonin. Get’s the body clock shifted. Just a thought.
Totally in for the long run. Preferably in a beautiful places. Indoors is fund to watch ,but no way!
What is the teams (Girls) general feeling, is running for a good time in a Marathon harder than setting out to finish a long ultra (say 50 miles and upwards as is 50k really an ultra). Ian
I bought a pair of Nike Vapourfly Next %'s recently and plan to test them at a parkrun soon (most probably Dulwich as looking for a flattish fast course). They certainly felt good in the intervals and tempo runs I've done in them. I tried a pair of Alphafly's as well but didn't get on with these at all as felt heavy and clunky.
Sounds like a PB is coming!
What kind of shoe would you recommend for a first time half marathon runner?
I think I have the same mentality as Andy when it comes to races or training. The marathon scares me, because I'd rather suffer alot for a short amount of time, rather than an extended period of mild suffering
It doesn’t feel mild when you’re in it 😂 but point taken
@@xTheGirlAnachronismx well mild discomfort for 30-60mins turns into great discomfort and mental anguish! But you're never as "out of breath" as you would be in a short and fast race lol
I don't though I would like to try one to see what it feels like. I have wider than 4E feet so I can't fit into anything in this space at this time.
"Super chatty slow run" aka "Ihave friends and you haven't...." 😂
hi there guys, im an overpronation runner or flat feet in simple terms. Iv'e only come across racing flats in the overpronation market. Do the trainer manufacturers refuse to make the supershoe for the overpronator because of this the lack of support they have.
All the best with the upcoming marathon Sarah. I've still not used any super shoes though I'm more into trails but did get a pair of Vaporflys over Christmas in the sale so looking forward to seeing what all the hype is about!
Let us know if you think they’re worth the hype!
Vapourflys are ok for 5-10k runs, maybe half marathon at a push. At the end of the day it’s down to the individual and how comfortable they feel.
i think lots can run long distances in VF's. Not me though. Ran the Great North Run (1/2 marathon) in a pair and the next morning could hardly walk. I am "big boned" though
Nike Vaporfly shoes: If they don’t work it’s a scam, if they do it’s cheating.
With world records being broken regularly (or it certainly seems that way), perhaps because of 'super shoes' and other technology, how much does this elevate the world records set by Hicham el Guerrouj? His mile record was set in 1999 and really has not been threatened.
Andy's such a great add to the team!!!🎉
I do struggle with easy runs, they're much easier when I actually need to run slowly
Super shoes are also semi conductors so the are partially magnetic.
Is the ASICS Superblast part of the "super shoes "?
Where are the videos of the training for the Osaka Marathon?
Search our channel for “Marathon Diaries” 👍
Where did you get the mugs?
I have a wide foot. What are wider super shoes?
80/20 is that in time or distance?
I gotta wonder with all these world records being broken the past couple of years if there isn't a new designer drug being used that testing companies aren't aware of yet and therefore not being tested for. Everyone is just getting so fast I don't see how just shoes and surface are the reason.
It's certainly possible. It would be interesting to look at the records at local running clubs to see if they have mainly been set in the past couple of years too.
Gene therapy
I love to run for distance, time matters on race day, but the rest of the time not.
Finish 10 k ...
I made the mistake of getting my son a pair of carbon plated shoes and now he wants to run in them every day. My wife hates them though.
Running so hard that you taste blood, that's the feeling of us half-milers or miles. The hate-love of middle distance athletes
Best wishes Sarah for your Japan PB! Incidentally, what’s with Asics? Their recent models have resulted in blisters and I had to return those 🫤I have been an Asics fan and now I am very happy with Brooks👍
😂😂😂 I see the “GPS Issues” people when their pace is really slow.
THE PEOPLE DEMAND MORE RICK 😈
Just to say that v necks aren't back.... because they never went away! Don't listen to the haters Rick!😂
Miami Vice 😁
Nice clotch Rick!
When will Andy run the marathon?
God luck Sarah with the marathon.
Why hasn’t Andy run a marathon yet?
He’s scared.
@@runningchannel Hahahhahahaha
Is she really not the girl from Narnia?
tiny leaf 😂
10:25 “a 5-hour marathon” aka brisk walking over the whole morning.
Andy: are you sure it's the shoes that triggered records in the last 3 years? Lockdown sounds like a golden opportunity for so called Drs...
Yes. I do mean doping...and the lockdowns giving an opportunity like maybe never before ro dope the shit out of athletes and give them "clear out time" not to get caught by the availability tests...
Wait, what? Hill runs at 8am instead of Club La Santa morning gymnastics? Sacrilege.
