Chartreuse production hasn't stopped. They just scaled back production 4 years ago and only announced it now. It's still being made it will just not be as often.
The title is a bit of misinformation. They haven't stopped production, they actually said they will not scale up production anymore to meet the growing demand so now Chartreuse is an allocated product.
You know my heart absolutely fell when I saw this video’s title, and while I’m still super rocked by this (chartreuse is my desert island only one bottle forever bottle) your comment did at least bring me some solace because yes, tempus will definitely show up, but dang :/
Total Wine carries a liquer called 'Ver' that's pretty close to Chartreuse, in a cocktail I use a tiny bit less and it replicates it fairly well. I always need to be able to make a Last Word!!!
For those interested: multiple distributors are only moving Chartreuse to bars / restaurants. It's likely retail stores will not be seeing them again. What I and my restaurant manager are doing is buying a case and splitting it with the liquor store across the street.
It's funny, I've only heard people talk about the chartruese situation, it's been exactly the same where I live. That is to say, rare as hell (only seen 2 bottles in 5 years) and insanely expensive (between 100 and 120 in store) Meanwhile yellow chartruese... doesn't exist, it's impossible to find in store.
I found a small mom & pop liquor store in Arkansas that had over half a dozen bottles of yellow chartreuse on the shelf for about $50 each. I plan on stockpiling.
you are featuring Genepy Le Chamois, which is instead a Yellow Chartreuse substitution. My favorite bar ABV uses des Alpes for their Last Word which is delicious
I had a cocktail at a local place called Grapes and Soda, and I could have sworn it had green chartreuse in it, but it was just a mix of herbs and bitters. It had Savory, Cilantro, and quite a few other herbs that I wish I could remember.
Of the two liquor stores I frequent, one guy, despite having far more variety, thought chartreuse was discontinued, but he's kind of daft, while the other store had several bottles of yellow, and chronically empty space for green. I tried switching yellow chartreuse for the green in a last word. It was really good. My sister and I had 3 back to back.
Great work incorporating the selling of the glassware right into the video. Nice and quick so people can't skip but also remind people they can buy them.
Hey Leonardo, another great informative and fun video! I've been a long time watcher (since 2019 to be exact). I know you are based in the US, thus the cocktail scene you're surrounded by would in the most part - be inspired by where you're from. I know you try to ensure that you broaden your scope, and present cocktails from around the world, (for example - Japanese cocktails) but i'd love to see more cocktail videos that are dedicated to around the world. I.e (I know this is biased), but I'm from Australia - we are taking the world by storm right now in the cocktail scene. We keep climbing up the ladders each year for best bars, best new bars and so forth. Other places like Hong Kong, Taiwan, Barcelona, Lisbon, are all places that are also making cutting edge cocktails that deserve to be show cased on such an amazing channel like yours, with the audience that cares. It's just a thought - but would love to see more videos that highlight a broader scope of the current bartending scene. Still loving the content, and if you'd like a nudge in a good direction for the Aus scene in particular, would be happy to have a chat :) Cheers, Mel, from Melbourne, Aus - Whisky & Alement bar.

Have you considered trying Boomsma Cloosterbitter? It's a much simpler profile of ingredients, but I've tested it in multiple green chartreuse cocktails and often I can't tell the difference. And in the few where I can tell the difference I actually prefer the Boomsma.
I was just in Spain this week and they have so much Chartreuse over there that Chartreuse reps were in Two Schmucks making drinks and pouring shots of it. Every bar had it.
Green Chartreuse still seem to be readily available at the Norwegian liquor monopoly. Then again, having a single supplyer for the whole country might make it easier to aquire
I wouldnt say its readily available in Canada but it shows up on LCBO shelves from time to time. If you live close to the border, do your research, might be worth a drive.
I tried a cocktail recently called a Bijou which I really liked. It's similar to a negroni but with chartreuse instead of campari. I had it with blood orange bitters and it was a really lovely drink.
I like how you compared Chartreuse with Faccia Brutto. I'd be interested to see how the Pago Pago and Prince Henry Punch compared when you use Chartreuse in those (as opposed to using Centum Herbis and Genepy like you did in the video). Perhaps an idea for a couple shorts?
I've always been curious about Chartreuse, never managed to try it, it was always a bit too expensive and out of my class lol. Had no idea the green was so rare and only getting more rare. I would like to try one of these substitutes one day for fun if I could even find those.
You and Anders did great videos on this topic, but I haven't heard anyone discuss possible subs for YELLOW Chartreuse. I feel like it shows up in more recipes...
I've only tried Ver as a Chartreuse replacement and it's very good! Maybe a little sweeter and less bitter but it's my go to whenever I need Chartreuse. It's also inexpensive and easy to find in my area at least.
I've been wondering what to do if I can't find Chartreuse (I still have half a bottle, and can order a couple more before it's gone) and have been asking around, and here finally a video on the topic. Thanks!
I appreciate the effort you put in to show alternatives and how they taste compared to chartreuse. I just wish the title of the video wasnt so misleading. I can understand that by reducing production its going to get harder and harder to acquire, but when I saw the title it seemed like that was going to happen quite quickly if they had fully stopped and people were going to panic buy/stock up on it.
I still had a bit of green chartreuse left when I got a bottle of Kloosterbitter a few weeks ago. Did a side-by-side comparison, both straight and in a Last Word, and it is VERY close. The best replacement I’d found previously was Ver liqueur, but it was noticeably different (more peppery, less rich). Kloosterbitter is *extremely* close to green chartreuse, nearly indistinguishable in the cocktail.
I can only get the 375ml of green chartreuse where im at but I can also get the yellow chartreuse 750ml, but theres under 500 bottles in the whole area of the green…

This was announced months ago (that the monks were cutting back, I heard for environmental reasons). All the stuff got bought up from all the Total Wine shops in the LA area.
I see a few places around me in Michigan that say they have it in stock for $130. What was it going for before this reduction in production? We use Boomsma in a few cocktails and really enjoy it!

I have 2 bottles of the green and 1 of yellow…..and no you can’t have them!
Leandro, the headline on this video "The monks have STOPPED making chartreuse"...is wrong.
You also note in your presentation that the monks are going to be "making less of the spirit"....which is inaccurate. From what I have been able to find rather than cutting production they just won't be increasing production in response to future increasing demands.
I didn't see that somebody pointed out both these errors in a prior comment. Leaving mine up to emphasize what the current situation actually is.
i get that it's a secret proprietary recipe, but can't we use booze forensics to reveal the ingredients??
Probably but to my knowledge nobody has
It just wouldn't be the same without all the love and ministrations that a monk can bring to the mix...
NPR did a story years back that MIT tried using mass spectrometry, if memory serves. Didn’t work.
they did not stop doing it :)
I want to like it. But in the end I always go “meh”. It has a very cloying flavor in everything you put it in.
Have anyone experience with this one: Chartreuse Cuvée des Meilleurs Ouvriers de France Sommeliers
Why dont they just license production out and use the money for their monastic stuff
Uh, I think I’m at a crossroad. 🍺🍺
Thanks. I was familiar with Genepy, but not the other two. I picked up a bottle of Chartreuse last week for $94. Needless to say, I'll be using it sparingly. Also, it's pronounced Pogo like bongo. ;-)
Sort of click-baity. The monks are still making chartreuse, they are just not increasing production to meet the demand.
Love the videos, the music not so much.....10 seconds repeating in hell.
@TheEducatedBarfly I'm French, Chartreuse is pronounced with a Z like zoo.
God kills a kitten everytime you pronounce it with a S !
What assholes! there's only two dudes who know this recipe and they're just like, nah, y'all, we gonna stop?! pass the recipe on down, homies. Jesus! (see what i did there)
Leandro needs a signature move while shaking his potent potables, akin to Steve the Bartender's patented smile - perhaps relating to when he sucks in his lips in concentration while shaking the tin: the drill which we have all come to know and love. There is the slappy-pants/crushy-poo maneuver, which may be an eligible contender, though these come post shake. Nonetheless, I'm not just here for his brain, so anything will do. And that little clothes-pin clip is a new one for me - perhaps it's a New York and/or California thing. Compari and Chartreuse combined in a cocktail: the anarchists are dancing in the streets...
The dead eye stare is my signature move
@@TheEducatedBarfly And there we have it, folks...from the man himself: the dead-eye stare. Combine that with a slappy-poo, and this man will take over the bar world.
Potent Potables? Is that a Gloomhaven reference!?
So dont buy this and don’t get to shit faced… simple
