    I'd like to add though that it wasn't running right at the time of this video. The engine that was on it had a compression issue, and the original timing box on it wasn't working properly.
    I have a short of a hard pull on this bike once I got everything sorted out on it. Believe or not its still going strong after having it 4 and a half years now. Link below.

    Gotta love the sound of a old Sports bike this is the bike that started today's Yamaha r6

      Very cool motorcycles indeed! The sound always sort of reminds me of like 80s race machines. Very raw and beefy. Sure I will have to make one in a couple of weeks though since I am currently repainting the tank, working out a few bugs in the harness, and doing a front end swap with an R1.

      How tall are those apes can u send me a link of where you got ‘‘em I got a xj650 maxim also just got the Murray’s carbs about to I sat an oil cooler off a 650 seca and I’m looking into the accel super coils as well

      @@serinapickron5768 I actually got the apes from a swap meet, really couldn't tell you the brand. But, they are 14 inch, 7/8 black aluminum apes (hollow), the real trick is making a throttle and clutch cable. As well as specifying the length of it to murrays carbs. The clutch cable I ordered since I have broken about 4 of each in the time I've started the project. In addition I haven't fixed my brake caliper do it has no front brakes to this day, hence the front end swap coming in the near future.

      It did just cross my mind however that if you would like to see more of the xj without me having to post it to RUclips. There are a bunch of pictures and videos of it on my Instagram, @Circumpunk.t send me a dm and I would be happy to give any inferences on yours as well if you need them.

      Also here's a link to a recent hard pass with the bike running better. At the time I shot the drive by. The motor had less than optimal compression. But I was running right when I took this one ruclips.net/user/shortsUEi1wmA7pow?feature=share

    How are the carbs compared to the CVs? I got an 82 Maxim as well and plan on swapping them out as well as 4-4 drag pipes

    • @joshstroud1388
      @joshstroud1388  2 года назад +1

      The carbs do make an improvement, better throttle response, easier to tune if you have to, better low end torque curve and it does add power but I haven't had a chance to dyno it yet to exactly how much I got in my case. I've since added a digital technique ignitor/cdi, and that Aldo made a very big difference. All in all I also have a 98 vmax but I still prefer my maxim. Not for its overall capability but its fun to drive it. 4 to 4 pipes would be really cool, and would be interested in hearing how they sound. Just make sure to tell them when you order the carbs what kind of pipes you're running, and in my case how long you need your throttle cable to be.

    • @joshstroud1388
      @joshstroud1388  2 года назад +1

      Oh, but one thing. Make sure your motors compression is within spec. As expected, if it's out, these carbs out of the box will still make a difference. But will likely make it run a bit rich.

      @@joshstroud1388 awesome! That's good to hear. I lucked out and got me a bike with only 7700 miles and it has around 8100 right now so it should be good to go. Original carbs were leaking and one of the exhaust stud holes were drilled out all jacked up so once I get the hole welded shut and drilled again ill be back in the saddle! I'm eager to hear 4-4 drag pipes too. I'll stick baffles in to make sure I don't have any drag pipe sag but she oughtta bark!

    What tail lights are you running?

    • @joshstroud1388
      @joshstroud1388  3 месяца назад

      Hi sorry I missed the notification. So the light strip is just a generic aftermarket tailight, brake, and signal strip from Amazon. The bracket I custom made from sheet metal. The two outside lights (I looked for them but I can't remember the company name) are just a small round led tailight, that are stuck into the frame holes from cutting the frame. If you go that route be sure to measure before looking for some. In the end I gave up on trying to get the signals to work. They lit up, but didn't flash, I bought an led flasher relay but never installed it. That probably would make them work. Overall I'm happy with how they turned out. Never had any issues being seen.

    So im looking into a '83 could i hypothetically do a build like this? Like is there parts for this?

    • @joshstroud1388
      @joshstroud1388  2 года назад +2

      Yes absolutely, since the xj650maxim was a 3 year bike, most of the parts for them are interchangeable, and typically when aftermarket parts are made for them, they fit all 3 years. If you have a social media account. I'd be happy to keep in touch to help make yours easier, on a direct messenger I can send part links and photos.

    What made a bigger difference the carbs or the coils?

    • @joshstroud1388
      @joshstroud1388  5 месяцев назад +1

      Both made a big difference honestly. But as far as noticeable differences I'd have to say
      1. Carbs
      2. The Cdi
      3. The coils
      But 2 and 3 are so close I'd even say they're equal differences.
      Edit: I'd like to add though that it wasn't running right at the time of this video. The engine that was on it had a compression issue, and the original timing box on it wasn't working properly.

      @@joshstroud1388 and which one did you put on your bike?

    • @joshstroud1388
      @joshstroud1388  5 месяцев назад +1

      @@Dudeeverything the cdi has several different names.
      Other names for your bike’s CDI box include:
      Igniter box
      CDI module
      Power pack
      Black box
      Brain box
      But what is a CDI box on a motorcycle, and what do you need to know about it?
      The short answer is, the CDI box controls your motorcycle’s ignition system-arguably one of the most essential systems on the bike. After all, if it doesn’t start correctly, your bike isn’t going anywhere. Most modern motorcycles (post-1980) have a CDI box, so even if you’re shopping used motorcycles, odds are, your bike will have one.
      More info on that here:

      @@Dudeeverything www.regulatorrectifier.com/products/1982-1983-yamaha-xj650-ignitor-unit-assembly-cdi is the one I put on my bike. It's much more precise than the old ignitor boxes, and if you compare this to the original there is no contest.

    750s are way better

    • @joshstroud1388
      @joshstroud1388  Год назад +2

      Yeah they're a little faster. But one of the positives about these is I could transfer most of the performance parts I have over to a 750 or 900 without having to do much. I will add that this project wasn't really about making it crazy fast. I have a Vmax for that. But making it my own, and maybe a little better to me than it was when i started. It's all in fun afterall.

    • @joshstroud1388
      @joshstroud1388  3 месяца назад

      They're a bit faster yeah. But it was never about making it stupid fast, i have a vmax for that. just a bit better than it was. More, my taste.
