@Pralhad Chaudhari I would argue leaving her husband would be better for her children. They will at least realise her value not just as a wife and a mother, but also as a person, who has some self-respect and can think for herself as well as her children.

@Emmanuel Tolerating that kind of behaviour for her kids will be even more detrimental for the kids, as they will think it is right to treat their spouse/mother like that. They literally humiliate her just because she can’t speak English. They do not see how much she does for their family. This is clearly evident in the way the daughter treats her mother. They will never know the value of the sacrifices or the work she’s done for her family if she doesn’t change her ways. Shashi cries relentlessly because she’s always hurt by her husband’s toxic behaviour, and never takes a stand for herself. The husband has no respect for her. She literally has to take English classes to learn English to prove her worth. Can you imagine being in such a situation? She’s forgotten her value as a person. So, instead of getting treated like trash, it’s always better to take a stand for yourself, and also for your children, by being with a man who knows how to cherish a woman.
I think what she needed more is communication between her husband, her kids and her. They were never corrected so what can you expect? They are not even aware then what can you expect? If she has a conversation between her and her husband about respect and how she is feeling and this disrespect continues then that’s a different story.
Standing up for yourself in a relationship where there is no communication about the problems is more effective than walking away from it, especially when Shashi was content with having a family and she loved her husband.
She must not tolerate this much disrespect from her husband. She deserve someone who knows her value more than she did. The only disappointing part of the movie.

Hats off to her. People need to understand that love is commitment. She loved her husband and her family so much she ignored their insults and lack of respect for her. She knew she already had love from her family. Her husband, her children. They loved her, but treated her carelessly. Making rude remarks because they thought her foolish and naive. On screen, throwing away her life and family for love, would probably be nice. But real life doesnt work that way. Real life is sacrificing a better future because you dont want to ruin what you have now.
It's bullshit. That's not love. That's what she learnt in her culture as a woman. That you have to tolerate disrespect and just give birth to kids because that's what marriage is about. If it werent an indian film, the character would have divorced the guy or tell him how disrespectful he is. Since the audience is indian, they gotta show 'women bear everything and stay' kind of things

But you can't love someone without respecting them. If you can then it's not love but the habit of staying with that person. Indian women confuse the habit with love. Most Indian men and in-laws don't love or respect their wives; they are just habituated to their needs getting taken care of by her. They will miss you when you are not there because things don't run smoothly anymore; so they will replace you with someone else. That's why Indian mothers-in-law take pride in training their daughters-in-law according to their family requirements! Basically,, they want an unpaid maid to fulfil everyone's wishes. Most Indian men are brought up poorly by their parents to become man child whom the mother no longer cater to after an age so she trains his wife to do so. When a man starts complaining that household things are not being done as it was done by his mother; that's a red flag that your husband is a man-child who doesn't want to change his habits and wants you to play the dual role of a mother and wife! These types of men can not accept strong women; they suffer from small penis syndrome! Never marry a Man-child they will destroy your individuality.

How to end a movie... This movie is perfect example of that.... Such a simple scene of laddoo falling down then she making again then her speech....it was such a nice ending
