Today I have a huge art supply haul from my favorite art supply store in Toronto, Above Ground Art Supplies! I will also be trying out the Faber-Castell 120 Polychromos colored pencil set for the first time in my sketchbook! Thank you Above Ground and Faber-Castell for these beautiful supplies. I love the Polychromos. I tried a few different brands but these were best for me because they're stronger than other ones and I can get a super sharp tip on the nib. Very lucky to have a full set too (although I don't use the pinks and purples very often). I also love that their watercolour pencils come in the exact same colour range so I use those as my first layer of colour then put the pencils on top.

Yes! I love how strong they are, I find they break way less often than some other pencils I have used. I didn't know that about the watercolor pencils, how cool! I might need to check those out 👀

Thanks so much! Depending on how many you have, you could always get one of their smaller sets and just supplement with a few extra colors 😄 There is something really fun about picking out individual colors from the store though 👀

Omg the polychromo study is breathtaking!
I love polychromos tbh :) since I’m German I have easy access to all faber Castell products… that made them boring for a while but when I saved enough money to finally buy the prismacolor premier pencils I heard so much good things about I went straight back to my polychromos xD I didn’t like the waxy coating the prismacolors had and the polychromos were always easier to sharpen and never wore down as quickly :) I’ll never go back

So happy for you with those art supplies ! The polychromos are my favorite, that earth green is my most used and most re bought one from my 120 set. I have my set for more than 2 years now, and still have colors in my box I never used before. I would love to see a dog sketching video. It’s so relaxing seeing you sketch

I really love Above Ground's online storee (I'm in Ottawa) but man, their in house watercolour paper is not good. It's hard to explain and I don't have a picture, but it has raised lines throughout. Not regular watercolour paper texture, like it was run through a machine that raked it or something. I buy from them still, just not their in house paper. Thanks for this. I subscribed!

I have the 24 set of the polychromos pencils and bought 5 extra colors,that's enough for me,I love them☺ I also got a faber castell mixed media set from ebay,that was part of an art class in the faber castell academy,but It wasn't used.I'm so happy because you can't buy it on the market and I got it for good money😂☺
I have little test tubes of turner acryl gouache,but I don't really know how to use them/mix with other materials. It would be very nice to see a video of them from you😊
I have Faber Castell Art& graphic pencils they act like water colour, I love them so much they make me more Happy than I ever imagined because they are easy to work with, evenly spreadable and vibrant and soluble ....
29 colors is plenty! 😊 The great thing about that is that you can always add more to your collection over the years if you felt like you wanted/ needed to! They really are great pencils, I like that the lead doesn't break as often as prismacolor pencils! Also, that Faber-castell mixed media kit sounds so cool, what a great find!!

Ah I remember how my polychrome 120 set used to be organised, 😂. I tend to use them for final details over a painting. They are great, however i pefer the Luminence range for black and white, which are more opaque.😊

Nice! Polychromes are superb….the cores are hard wearing & oil based and blend awesome if you use solvent and lots of layering, and you can individually buy each colour.😊
The only colour I’m not sure of is the white!? I would use the Caran d’ache luminance white…
I've been thinking of getting the Polychromos 120 set for my birthday, and this definitely made me even more inclined to do so... I already have a few but the full colour selection seems so wonderful!

my moms godmother was born in 1919, and her husband was born in 1893! he was a pretty well known composer in Germany, but his work got destroyed and hidden by the Nzs as it took a stance against the regime, rendering him pretty much unknown today.
He was alive when painter John Singer Sargent was!
I love linking historical figures to my moms godmother or her husband.
we have his composer desk and a bunch of trinkets, their age makes me feel very connected to those inspirational artists of the past

I order from above ground online. Sometimes the shipping prices change. I order from them much more when the shipping is free. They are great for options and prices and sell many brands no one else in Canada does and for great prices. I also love the quality of the above ground branded supplies I have tried. Remember to add taxes and shipping to the actual cost for your calculations. I’ve dreamed of actually going to the store since 2009 so thank you for showing it to me. I hear the turner acryl gouache is among the best acrylic gouache in the world but have not tried it. I have all the polychromos and they are great for sketching, fine details. and mixed media but not my favourite coloured pencil, I use them often however. They have many more unique colours and are great to add to an over all mixed brand coloured pencil collection. I find personally no issue with mixed media and with using polychromos in with more waxy coloured pencils. The best eraser by far (for all coloured pencils) for polychromos is the Faber-Castell ‘dust free’. It isn’t dust free (what a stupid name) BUT it is the BEST at erasing ALL coloured pencils! Feel free to sketch in colour and erase very well if you get one!
The polychromos are very waterproof and overlaying your polychromos sketches with watercolour is fun, for example. Where the pencil is it will repel but sink in around well (varies by thickness and paper type.) the sketch and polychromos drawing will be clear through washes of watercolour for fun more line heavy and graphic styles.

Above Ground's online store is great because they have such a large selection and they carry so many different brands! I also find that they have sales frequently. I hope you are able to check out their store in person one day, it is one of my favourite places in Toronto. So I got the polychromos set of 12 a few years ago and they quickly became my favourite pencils. And so late last year for Christmas I bought the 120 wooden case set, though I haven't used them yet because my current sketchbook hates pencils XD
But I look forward to integrating them into my art journey~ :)

Love Polychromos and have spent many hours choosing colours. If the full set ever turned up in my hands, I'd lose my mind. I don't think i have the skills to handle that much colour. Wasted on me. I love how you use them. Ingenius and motivating. Lovely video as always. Can't wait to watch you use the gkuaches. I think the oil set could have done with Ivory black instead of the blue, like a Zhorn pallete but thats just what I think...enjoy it all

I think choosing a color palette ahead of time helps with this quite a bit! I've only recently started working with colored pencils and I feel like there is still so much to learn about the medium.
