It's generally considered polite and in formal conversations it's very common especially when you’re not socially above the person you’re speaking to. In casual conversation, watashi is slightly more feminine than masculine, but guys still use it all the time. Atashi is a varient of watashi that is more strictly feminine regardless of formal/informal. The main first person pronouns I can think of that are more specifically masculine are ore and boku. Both are informal, with boku usually being used by boys (though adult men can use it it's just not as common I'm pretty sure) and ore being slightly more tough/rude and can imply you think you're above the person you’re speaking to And there's more pronouns but those are the ones I feel confident enough describing.

Watashi is a pretty safe form of "I" to use. It's generally considered polite and in formal conversations it's very common especially when you’re not socially above the person you’re speaking to. In casual conversation, watashi is slightly more feminine than masculine, but guys still use it all the time.
Atashi is a varient of watashi that is more strictly feminine regardless of formal/informal.
The main first person pronouns I can think of that are more specifically masculine are ore and boku. Both are informal, with boku usually being used by boys (though adult men can use it it's just not as common I'm pretty sure) and ore being slightly more tough/rude and can imply you think you're above the person you’re speaking to
And there's more pronouns but those are the ones I feel confident enough describing.
