The entirety of both the hanger and takeoff scenes amaze me for some reason. Genuinely makes me want to look more into sound design and how they were able to so faithfully recreate all the sounds that made it really feel like you were inside an airbase.
There is a "making of" mini-documentary on the shows DVD extra features that shows the crew went to an actual Japanese Air Self-Defense Force airbase in Komatsu and recorded real sounds and interviewed pilots.

Very unimportant detail is the AST on the rubber seal. I’m pretty darn sure it’s what inspired AST21. If you don’t know him, he draws cool airplanes. I do wish I was blessed by talent like him but I guess not everyone deserves it.
This OVA had some of the best sound design I’ve had the pleasure of hearing in any anime. No wonder they chose to not play any music for 90% of the dogfights. Those engine and gun sounds are music enough.
The only thing I don't like about this OVA is that weird BL relationship between Jack and Rei, they didn't purposely emphasize it, but that "more than just friends" atmosphere just can not be ignored, and it always bugs me whenever I feel like to enjoy the brilliant mechanical design, sound effect and the perfectly rendered combat scene...
It was bullshit added because of Yumi Tada. She's the artist for the manga adaptation and they used her character designs for the anime, and she's a fujoshi. The novels don't have any of this weird-ass BL vibe between them: hell, in the novels, one of the first things we see Rei say to Jack is he just finished fucking a prostitute in the red light district before their meeting.

As someone said, they recorded real sounds from JASDF planes, including the F-15Js which you can hear 1:56 is the F-15's iconic nozzle actuator.
Because they used all real sounds they recorded themselves.

The amount of details going into these aircraft blows my mind... truly unrivaled prduction quality, even today's anime CG can't keep up!

From what I read on another video: someone mentioned how the anime producers collaborated with the JASDF to record real jet engine afterburner sounds
Oh trust me. They took all the actual cockpit alarms too. Scared the shit out of me in the first dogfight with Yukikaze with the mere alarms alone.
Probably also had brought in technical advisors likely former pilots on how aerial combat work.
