Great video Tony - thank you! I'm just wondering how you got on with the swam traps? Did you catch anything? Just wondering how you got-on extracting the swarm from your trap? Keep up the vids! :D
Hello Tony, I think that you are a very knowledgable fellow indeed, and I take my hat off to you.
And not just for beekeeping, but every other project on gardening that you do.
Keep u all your great work. Allan.
Thank you Allan. I really appreciate that. I hope you are enjoying the content ?
A great useful project for any bee keeper. Practical and will not rot 😀👍. Is the entrance hole in only one bucket or both? Nice one Tony 😀👍
In just one bucket i have left it small as its easier to defend. i will see how they go with the. 10 out 10 more finished waiting to go out. see if they catch swarms
Thank you. I am trying this!
Thank you Tony so much for that keep up the good work you are doing a grand job for us gardeners 👍👍
Thanks Beverley really appreciate your kind comments :)
Thanks so much very creative and helpful work
You are so welcome!
Great video Tony, very informative and fantastic quality 👍🏻👍🏻 Keep up the good work
Cheers, Brian. :)
Howdy folks, I was very happy to watch your video on cheap swarm traps, as I am a pensioner down under in Encounter Bay South Australia. and always looking for the cheap way out, your trap is a delight to watch.
Allan.
Thanks Allan they worked excellent. I caught 15 swarms out of 20 traps last year. What i did find though if I left the swarm in to long it became a cut out job. for that reason I am going back to 5 frame nucs. Ideal though if you can check your traps every few days
What a wonderful design! I hope you will keep us updated about any swarms you catch!!!
I Sure will Donna, hopefully lots of swarms in them. infact I just got in from catching a swarm
Did you catch any swarm with this bucket? Thank you.
I caught 6 swarm out of 7 buckets I placed out
Could you use duct tape to secure the screens. I like the silicone but how long did it take to dray? I have a hive getting ready to swarm. I better get a move on. Thanks again. I will look at all your videos. You are a great teacher too. xo
Awesome update Tony and blessings
Thanks again Linda your a star :)
Tony being the start of your swarm season ( March )have you started hanging out your swarm traps yet ?...May be this is a gentle reminder. Ha Ha. I'd really appreciate another swarm trap video if you get the time. Keep healthy...Your friend from Australia.
Kerry I am a little late this year due to all the flooding we had. Now the weather is nice we are in lockdown due to covid 19 i am hoping to get them out as i get the chance though
There's a bees nest next to my plot in the crack of a poplar tree. I wasn't aware they were there till they swarmed yesterday I didn't hang around to see where they went :) Your welcome to hang one nearby if you ever come to Notts.
lol a little too far. Literally just got back from collecting a swarm its 22.54 got the call at 21.05 in a tree
Looks good to me. and definitely a lot cheaper and easier than building with wood. thanks for sharing. Hope they work.
You bet. I caught 8 swarms in them last year
@@simplifygardening In that case I'm off to search the www for 20l plant pots ...I didnt realise the video was a year old.
A wonderful invention Tony. You could put a patent on it.
Lol needs to show results Patrick otherwise just useless plant pot with big holes lol
I didn't see any comments regarding the yellowish/white blobs that are on the front of the traps after you hung them. It looks a bit like a waxy formation...something you applied, or the bees? Thanks from Tucson, AZ.
Thats wax the bees applied when a swarm came
@@simplifygardening OH! I hadn't heard they did that! Cool beans! Er... maybe that should be cool BEES! 😁
Thanks!
Husband can watch you all day very interesting but would like to know details of your shop could you please send it to me thank you from Wolverhampton 👍👍
Hi Beverley. The online shop is all based on Amazon. in fact you will even pay Amazon when you go through to check out. my store is whats known as an affiliate store, this means Amazon will pay me a commission for the sale. It's good as you have the backing of a massive international company. you can find my store here. www.ukherewegrow.com/shop. Thanks for your great comments. Tony
what an ingenious idea Tony !! reduce, recycle and or reuse
Well they are all out. 2 been stolen already :( but no swarms yet due to us being in the June gap. but hopefully should start again soon
great idear
Thanks Steven :)
howdy, Tony,
I found two small problems with the traps.
You could paint the parts White to keep them a bit cooler, and I find that you need to ruff up the plastic inside so the mastic will stick.
Have a great day, Allan.
Yes Allan I later turned to a contact adhesive and that sealed the mesh down much better. Still caught loads of swarms last year and this year. I have also started using my wooden ones again too
Thank you Tony for such brilliant content. I followed your design last Spring and caught 2 swarms out of 6 traps .I can't wait for our next Spring here in Australia (September ) to try again. Have you had any action from scout bees yet this swarming season ? Another video on swarm trapping would be fantastic. Who doesn't like free bees ? ....Thanks again , Kerry .
Hey Kerry I am running a little late this year. I will need to get some traps out so will do a video if and when I catch any swarms or do any cut outs. Stay tuned
Thank you Tony ,...Kerry.
No Prob Kerry
Brilliant idea,and really interesting :)
Thanks Tracy. just hope they work now
UK Here We Grow fingers crossed after all that work!.
Im sure there will be a video if i do :)
Really nice, I hope to see an update when a swarm moves in!
I will be sure to let you guys know how they perform :)
I'm struggling with bonding the mesh to the polypropylene. I don't think mastik/sealant is the correct solution here and epoxy would be a better bet.
Christopher score the plastic but a contact adhesive might work better
@@simplifygardening no good with contact adhesive or epoxy. Have ended up using thicker mesh and nuts and bolts.
@@simplifygardening would duct tape and and onion sack work as good ? ..as it's only temporary
Nice informative video and gives me permission to build this style of swarm trap. Do you put tape on the inside of the drain holes you coved to keep the bees from getting stuck? Also, Why not just have the drain holes be the vents with an added screen? Or are the cut squares just easier?
Yes i put tape on the inside. If u leave them all open the bees wont use it as it becomes to light inside
VERY good again tony ....nice one mate , (from merthyr/aberdare .)
Cheers Paul. Good to have a fellow welshman commenting :)
Not everyone has a peace of come to get started with
Ask a bee keeper near you if not use just foundation
What is your day job Tony? Is it something to do with electronics, or are you just collecting old computer etc? 😀 btw I think I'm trying out this trap as well.......
Kenneth Stensrud im a firefighter. The pcs are something i do with my spare time.
Great that your going to try it Kenneth, Hopefully they will work well for you too
Just reminded me to call in at the other plot possibility Mate... NO BEES ALOWED at the moment in the EDEN Site.. :-(
That's a shame. I purposely don't keep them on allotment sites after issues i had now keep on private land
How many hives do you have mate, and what yields do you get if you don't mind me asking Tony???
Went into winter with 20 but had a real bad winter mate im down to 10 lost half. However I have 3 swarms in the garden I have collected and 2 just gone into llanciach fawr manor house, so back to 15. will be doing splits and raising some queens shortly and increasing nucs to go through winter incase I have another bad loss
Is there an insulation you could use to fend off the extreme cold?
What litreage of honey could you expect from hive on average pal?
Sorry for the mither mate but Mick and I have been seriously thinking about bees and are thinking of taking a straw poll of the other growers with a stake in the society down here to push the issue with the Comity... WE both love honey and with all the useful befits of it, see no reason for the ban (WE DEMAND IT) LOL
Yes could have put foam board under the roof and created an upper entrance to help with airflow, its not cold that kills them its being wet from condensation. however mine starved despite there being honey in the hive as it was too cold for them to move around to it. Ill be wrapping them this year. Depends on the year mate Ive just pulled 75 jars worth off one hive which is around 35 lb but you can get about 70lbs in a good year. Im talking at llanciach manor house about bees for an event they have on saturday will sell that there as i need to replace the money that i just spent on a new extractor
What's a quid?
lol did i say quid in this? Its a £ 1 pound
Oh.. I see..i think
Oh.. I see..i think
Someone's been to B&Q!!! LOL ---- 150?
Like this T.. I'll be either finding a new site for the bee palace or Joining and pushing the comity to allow hives on the plots for next year... Mick and I are thinking of applying this September mate... Fingers Crossed...
what have I been to B&Q for?
All this inspiration your getting from me lol
The Makita twin set mate.. Same as the set I got with driver and Jig... They had em in for 150 Quid with carry case and 2 Lithium + Charger
