  • Skiing Spring Dipper - Jaybird - Dercum’s Dash at Keystone, Colorado post Thanksgiving 2021.
This is a great Blue/Green/Blue run that is much less crowded than Schoolmarm. The blue portion is pretty short and not too demanding. During early season when few trails are open, Spring Dipper and Schoolmarm are usually the first to get attention. Come to this one if you want your own space and much fewer bodies. It’s a full 3 miles down to the Summit Express via Spring Dipper, Jaywalk and Dercum’s Dash.

The problem with these types of cameras is that it is really hard to judge how hard or steep a run actually is. I was told Spring Dipper was preferable over Schoolmarm, even for beginner skiers. I'm not so sure about that. Schoolmarm has some blue-like steep sections but it mellows out between them and there are some rest areas every mile. The main issue with schoolmarm, especially early season, is that it is a freaking highway of mixed abilities.

Absolutely right. I like to post render at a very wide angle to show more of the surroundings, and with that, comes a distorted view of the terrain steepness. When I first hit Spring Dipper I was a little shocked when I came up to the first headwall. It was long and steep, and the view made it more intimidating. But in my video, it looks like a gentle slope. I think you were directed to Spring Dipper because it is as long as Schoolmarm, but less crowded. Unfortunately if you’re not quite a blue skier, that one headwall is going to have you apprehensive. I can still shoot video and capture the steepness of the terrain with that camera, but I have to sacrifice my field of view. But at least with this camera, I have a choice, and I don’t have to make that choice until after I shoot. Thanks for the comment.

These videos are great! Found them looking for Big Sky videos in anticipation of my 3rd trip there in a couple months. I would love to see a video of your camera setup (particularly your homemade rotating selfie stick). Cheers!

Awesome! I leave for Big Sky in a week. We’ll be there for a week until the end of January. I plan on video covering as many of the runs I can that I’ve not done. So many! I know I’ve broke my promise to others that requested a video of my rig. I’m going to do it, but can’t promise it will be before I leave. Thanks for your compliment!

@@jusgibs I had not skied in 20 years (kids amirite 🤣), mainly east coast and one trip to Snowmass and went there for the first time in 2019 then again in 2020 before COVID. It's amazing. I'm only intermediate so I've been able to do most of the blue runs over two trips. If you haven't, try to get over to Moonlight. It's a pain (4 lifts) but some nice long cruisers over there (Horseshoe, Trembler, Merriweather).

@@bridgecrasher Those are exactly the trails I’m heading for. That area over there is little traveled. Love it when you’re the only ones. Your life sounds like mine. I started back in 2018 after 25 years. Even back then, I was a 1-trip a winter skier. Not much of a chance to ski down in southern Texas. But I’m doing my best to make up for it. In a few years, we plan on spending the entire winter skiing Big Sky and some other places in Montana.
