The very beginning of what would become a new era for the show.
The beginning of a new era (to be) on the Price is Right! Many people watching now, myself included, grew up listening to Rod Roddy calling down contestants. Sounds like he had a bit of a nervous moment there at the start, repeating the intro. But, it's expected for him to be a little nervous on show #1.
I think that we adjusted to Rod very well.He was still announcing on Press Your Luck at the time.
Rod Roddy and Bob Barker are the quintessential voices of my stay-home-from-school-sick days.
Finally! We get to see the dulcet tones (in the words of the late Peter Tomarken on "Press Your Luck") to step up to the place with Rod Roddy on "The Price Is Right"!
Johnny was the best but I grew up with Rod Roddy always thought he was very good
Your description is wrong. This is 5921D not 5934D. This is from the 12/9/85 episode of The Price is Right featuring the debut of Rod Roddy!
I bet Rod appreciated the services of Ida Mufferbids
I could so totally relate to this. I remember my first time doing announcing on TV during a live news hit, I actually did what Rod did here... He repeated the "first four" tagline. I read an advertising tag twice because I totally forgot I said it. Suffice it to say he stayed on in his job and improved, and so did I.
Another one of those voices I was inspired by to get into broadcasting.
Rod sounds a little rough this first episode, but he got a lot better. He was at his best from about late 1986 to around 1992, when illness started to zap a lot of his energy and enthusiasm from his announcing. He was never quite Johnny Olson, but he definitely was great for many, many years.
Actually his colon cancer was diagnosed on 9/11. But before that he had to lower his delivery by the late 80s/early 90s because he was repeatedly contracting laryngitis.
@@rhyancoleman6462I really hated that he lowered his voice during his later years
I figured there must have been some health-related reason why his delivery got lower and quieter. He did seem to get some of his old energy back in his last year or two.
Loved when Price is Right actually had REAL contestants that weren't necessarily "good for TV" and did cartwheels coming down.
Daytime game shows have always attracted a lot of wannabe actors due to most of them taping in L.A., but yes, TPIR seemed to be better than most in getting more "regular folks" on the show, likely due to the program getting a lot of people on vacation going to the show. Now, yes, it seems almost 90% of them are wannabe actors and now almost all of them wear tacky t-shirts. I liked it better when the t-shirts were rare and creative.
It's not "good TV" if all they're doing is acting. Fake excitement is cringe. It's awesome when it's genuine. Back in the 80s and 90s, people were being real when they were shocked or running around like an excited 5 y/o.
I remember this woman from a season or two ago who had that genuine shock, but then it was ruined by her "acting excited" and doing a stupid dance as she was probably told to do by Adam (the director). Like... you had good TV there. Why did you ruin it?
The contestants today are more real than ever and the best ever!
Nobody cares what you think, invalid
@@supergamer7473 idiot. drufuss and friends ruined the show
Johnny, Rod, and Rich's voices on TPIR are like comfort food.
Rich was by far my least favorite announcer on TPIR. I think George Gray is far superior to him.
Yeah, Rich's announcing style really grated on me - way too loud, nasal, and singsong for my tastes. George can sound a little cheesy and over-the-top at times, but he's still considerably easier on my ears than Rich was.
I don't care! I loved the Rod Roddy era!
Grew up in that era
So did I. Probably helps that I have no memory of the Johnny Olson era, being 46 1/2...
He was good its just he wasnt first and Johnny O was better and kinda magic he was in the showcase and they did more theme showcases basted on movies even Raiders of the lost arc and the mummy to think of a few
He auditioned along with Bob Hilton, Rich Jefferies and interim announcer Gene Wood.
My favorite Rod Roddy moment was from the mid 90s. Bob was talking about how during a rehearsal, a car was driven on stage (probably to rehearse Lucky Seven) and Rod, getting scared, jumped into the audience. The next game played was for a car and Rod went "run for your lives, it's a new car!" I remember laughing so hard.
Also, I always loved how he announced "a comfy loooovvvee seat" in a very sensual tone, almost like he was Barry White, haha.
Haha! I remember that one.
Actually it was "Prepare to jump, it's a new car!"
A lot of Rod Roddy moments to remember during his time:
- Gave wrong IUFB description for bids stating about a BBQ and a new car
- Recognized for his wardrobe of colorful jackets
- Only announcer in which when calling the next contestant to “Come on Down” on camera, the first 3 years was him calling then fading the shot to the contestant coming down, then it become him calling the contestant with a drop down of him and the contestant in the same shot
- Rod Roddy is still to this date the longest announcer in TPIR history for now at 17 years. Johnny Olson did it for 13, Rich Fields did it for 6 and current announcer George Gray is currently tied with Olson at 13.
Rod Roddy Become Permanent Announcers in February 1986!!!?
Rod would also be the voice of the microphone announcer in Disney’s House of Mouse!
From the heart of Downtown Main Street, it's Disney's House of Mouse!
You got it Bob...I mean, Mickey!
And let's say... it was a rough start for him on his first audition day. But as usual over time, he got better at it and he stayed there for quite a long time (even though the last two years he was battling cancer).
Actually his colon cancer was diagnosed on 9/11.
Rod was my second favorite announcer of all time on TPIR, behind Johnny Olson. I like George Gray better than Rich Fields, but what bothers me about the Gray, and this is no fault of his own, is that the prize descriptions are so generic now. "That's a 5 oz. container of salad dressing!" I get it, companies aren't sponsoring their products on the show like they used to, so TPIR doesn't want to give them free advertising, but I'd just get rid of the product descriptions all together if you are just going to do generic descriptions.
Maybe my thinking is backwards but announcing the products even for free would increase the chances they would pay for it eventually because you did them a courtesy and because if your sales people did their homework could go to the companies and say "We've been promoting your products for x weeks and have an audience of y people and our surveys show they are not only more likely to use your brand but are doing so with an increase of x percent. How much can we put your sponsorship down for?"
Well, when there are big shoes like Johnny Olsen, I would have been nervous too! But in my opinion, Rod Roddy, Burton Richardson, Randy West, and Rich Fields all did a great job in their own right! R-E-S-P-E-C-T!!!!
And now it's George Gray who currently holds the baton passed from Rich Fields
@@rain4est133Watching Drew's TPIR Channel, I personally prefer JD Roberto.
Did not like Rich Fields' announcing style at all. Burton and especially Randy would have been much better choices. Heck, any of the other 2003-04 tryouts besides Daniel Rosen would have been preferable.
@mikebode7560 Agreed! But Rich improved by Mid-Season 34, Season 35 and Drew's early seasons. I liked Art Sanders too.
@@mikebode7560 Bob actually wanted Randy (because Supermarket Sweep was still very popular at the time).
I think Rich Fields getting picked was kind of a way for Price to get back at Wheel though...because his Proper Name can also be a Place and it was a subtle Pat roast in Price's eyes.
R.I.P. King Rod Roddy 1937-2003.

A pretty rough start for a long journey - but I could see Rod didn't quite get into the flow yet.
Zzzzzzzz
Where are all the Rich Jeffries announcing episodes?
Rod Roddy, a native of Fort Worth, TX
He is buried in Fort Worth as well. Who knows how many people visited his grave since passed on in 2003.
Man he was wetting his pants voice cracked twice...but he got over it and I agree who wouldn't be nervous also he was still doing double duty on PYL so yeah...but he's who I remember as the TPIR Voice
Also triple duty since he also took over as announcer on the Tom Kennedy-hosted syndicated version. (No auditions took place on that version; Gene Wood filled in.)
@@trevortuominen8233 forgot that
Call me nuts, I love me some Rod Roddy, but I think a better replacement for Johnny Olson (who didn’t audition) would’ve been Dean Goss. He was doing Let’s Make A Deal at the time and did one heck of a job there.
Goss was good on LMAD, I'm Telling and Pyramid. An underrated announcer for sure.

@@silentbob3208 (question: "re-darts")
Rod not my fav announcer...I always thought Olson's voice was better...the behind the scenes drama with Rod and Bob is interesting though...Rod started out with normal suits then he started wearing that real weird stuff I think when he started getting a lot of fans and viewer mail...and then somewhere along the line Bob clipped his wings and took away his on-camera appearances as Rod was getting a little too comfortable in his position before his death...sad end.
I've heard more the reason Bob took camera time away from Rod was due to Rod's friendship with the Beauties during a time when Barker began having issues with them and because of his illness. Bob actually encouraged Rod to wear the colorful jackets. True or not, it's sad that the drama backstage began affecting the show.
Johnny O was someone who’d been announcing since the 50’s, had a sterling reputation at G-T and was universally loved. Bob likely viewed him as an equal and a peer.
Rod was a generation younger than Bob, had not previously worked at G-T and I agree that his over the top style and clothes likely grated on Bob more as time went by. The 80’s were also when Bob really consolidated power behind the scenes after Frank Wayne’s death…so the way things played out with Rod’s screen time being cut was probably only a matter of time.
@@philduritza7717 Once Bob became EP in 1987, the show changed, and not for the better.
Ben - I would say another key factor in the show’s evolution around this time was Mark Goodson’s death in 1992 and the ultimate sale of G-T.
My two favorite eras of the show are the “family” era of about 1980 through Johnny O’s death (the show had perfected the 60 minute format by then and was hitting on all cylinders) and the post Happy Gilmore era through Bob’s retirement (the show as we knew it got a proper send off, the audience energy was huge due to all the new college student interest in the show, and a lot of the behind the scenes challenges of the late 80’s and 90’s had been resolved)
(suggestion: never believe any kind of "behind the scenes" rumor)
That's our man.

He should've been let go after the taping.
We are now entering the Rod Roddy era. Not as good as Johnny, but he filled the gap until his own death in 2003.
Johnny Olson left behind shoes no one could fill but Rod did it better than anyone else.
@@silentbob3208 Well it's like that song by George Jones-Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes. The answer to that question is nobody.

Nobody could have replaced Johnny O, but Rod did a wonderful job succeeding him.
Robert he knows the country song Sleeping Single In A Doublebed ! 🛌
Johnny Olson was the best announcer on TPIR, Rod Roddy was not that good.
Out of the 4 announcers, Roddy was the worst, here's my whole Standings, they're my opinions
4. Rod Roddy 6/10 Not a bad announcer, but not a very good one either, not even close to beating George Gray and Johnny Olson. R.I.P.
3. Rich Fields 7.5/10 Pretty good announcer, not as good as Olson and Gray, but still not bad. Also, announcing wise, Fields sounds like Olson. The only announcer to announce on the Bob Barker version and the Drew Carey version.
2. Johnny Olson 9/10 What An announcer he is, he started all, and kicked off with a BOOM! He definitely fit in with The Price Is Right announcing system! Only issue, not as good as George Gray.
1. George Gray 10/10 Yah, just a perfect announcer, he's doing amazing! He's even funny sometimes. He checks off all boxes!
You lost all credibility when you say George Gray is the best announcer Price ever had 😂😂😂😂 he's easily considered the worst out of the four. Each of the others had a punch, a kick to their voice. George Gray is generic as generic can get. And, to put him over Johnny Olson? Olson literally immortalized "Come on down!" No true fan thinks of George Gray when they hear those words lmao

Rod Roddy was chosen as the permanent host because his voice sounded closer to Johnny Olson and was there until 2003. He died on October 27th 2003 at the age of 66.
