- Only one weekend left in my summer shop and I am working on up-cycled clothing to add to my line. In this week's project, I show how I am transforming a pair of summer capris into a Fall look. I also experiment with free-motion zig-zagging. I also show my darning foot. In last week's video I demonstrated my open-toed quilting foot: • Sketch to Stitch and I...

Julia, you can do free motion with any stitch at all that your machine does, doesn’t have to be the zigzag. It’s been awhile since I’ve done it, but seems to me I had some fun with a leaf stitch and the blind hem stitch at one time. Nice job! Always inspiring
Hi, I’ve been experimenting- it’s so fun!
Hello from North Wales. hi Julia , we are just out of lockdown and I’m hoping to take inspiration from you. Thanks for the great tip of using the embroidery foot for sewing something on a trouser leg, this has to be tip of the year for me, I have unpicked the inside seam for thirty years. I have been thinking for a few days how I’m going to sew embellishment on trouser side seams and I saw your video. IT WORKS! RUclips is a great way of sharing ideas . Have a good week.
Hi Jane, I'm so glad I was able to help you out. When I was in college (in the late 70's) , I worked at a sewing machine store part-time. Open-arm machines were quite new and all the rage. We also demonstrated how to mend jeans with the darner foot. It was before free-motion stitching was popular. I've come full circle! LOL
Wow!! How cool...thanks for sharing
Julia...what a talent God has given you. Wow, loving your creativity. I love the fact that your not afraid to try so many things...& mediums, as well. Tfs.
Hi Lorene, I am so glad you are enjoying my videos. My son and daughter laugh at me because I always just "go for it". I've had lots of whoops, but enjoy the process. Thanks for watching, Julia
So very cool!!!!!
As usual, great video! I love upcycled clothing!!!
Me too!!
You’re brilliant- I can’t believe I just found this channel. I’ve been binge-watching and learning sooo much. Thank you!
I’m so glad you are enjoying my videos! This is a wonderful sewing community! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
I love all of your ideas and videos! I literally watch them over and over, trying to learn! Thanks so much!!❤
I do the same thing ,I enjoy all this sewing . Love this so much.
Hi Brenda, Thank you so much for taking the time comment. Your kind words mean so much! Happy sewing, Julia
thank you!
Hi Julia, Another home run upcycle project. I just love this project. It so wonderful, how the community of crafters share their knowledge. That is why I love your channel. TFS! Stay safe and healthy. (P. S. I do not know if you are aware that You Tube has now added numerous commercials to any video over 8 minutes. From what I understand if you wish you could go in and change the settings).
Hi Janet, I really like the up cycled projects too. During lockdown, all my supplier warehouses were closed so I was not able to buy my sweatshirts, etc for the season. Now, I'm thinking, I'm not going to place huge orders for new shirts anymore- I'm just thrifting and breathing new life into something discarded! It's fun! I know about the ads- I just changed the placement on this video and eliminated one of the ad breaks. It is the only way that I make money for all the work I do on RUclips so I can not take out all the ads. For a small monthly fee, viewers can sign up for RUclips Red and watch all videos ad free. Have a great day, Julia
@@stitchesbyjulia yes I understand about the ads. No issue. Thanks so much for all your beautiful work.
So creative
Lovely & inspiring !
Thank you so much!
This is the second of your videos I have watched tonight, and I'm enthralled with what you are doing. Never heard, nor thought of doing free motion to prevent having to open up the seam on the jeans. Teaching myself to do this. Thanks for sharing. Got some great ideas. Am now a subbie.
Hi, Thank you so much for watching and subscribing. This is a wonderful sewing community! Enjoy. Julia
You always have such creative ideas. Love your videos.
Thanks so much 😊
Thanks Julia, you never fail to amaze me with new ideas and inspiration! Just going to try the zig zag free motion.........!
Hi Lucy, The zig zag free motion is loads of fun! Hope you give it a try. Julia
Thank you, Julia ♥️♥️♥️
Julia this project is so creative. I love these jeans. I am 67 and if I was thinner LOL, I would absolutely wear those. So cute and ecclectic!!
Age and size won’t matter, you can definitely be the coolest fashionista in town if you just go for it!
Love your video. It is so creative. You gave me lots of great ideas.
Oooo,I love your ideas.
Thanks for another great video, Julia! Love what you did to upcycle the jeans--they turned out really cute. I also like your idea of purchasing lace skirts just for the fabric to re-use in other projects. Very clever and cost effective. Love the free-motion zig-zag stitching too. I'll have to give that a try.
Yes, give the free-motion zig-zagging a try! It is really fun! Thanks for watching, Julia
Love this project Julia ! Great to see your flair for placing pieces where they really work together. I so enjoy your videos and look forward to seeing them- also seeing and hearing you too. All success to you, thankyou for sharing.
Hi Jean, Thank you so much for your comment and for watching! Julia
You are so creative Julia and you inspire me to try different things.
I love the way you add your pieces, and how you have the knack of choosing just the right things. Good luck on your sales on the holiday week-end. The best I can wish for you is good weather. :-)
Hi again Phyllis, We are having much cooler weather this week. Fall is finally in the air. So much heat and humidity this summer. It's always bitter sweet to close my shop for the season but maybe I can finally get my house cleaned! Have a good week, Julia
That really adds so much updating the wardrobe😃 I can’t wait to give a try!!
Very fun!
Oh I really Love your style! I would love to be able to do things like you with little patches here and there. You are really creative. ☺️ thanks for showing us your talents!
Great idea. Very creative . I would need to check if a foot that you using will accomdate my machine. I will look into it. Thank you. Sandra B.
Thanks for sharing that free motion zig zag stitch. I’ll definitely try it🥰
Wowee!!!! 💜
Brenda
What a great tip to free motion on pant legs! It seems so simple and yet it never occurred to me 😅
Glad you liked it!!
You should turn those capris into bell bottom pants. Skirts are perfect as the bottom part and add a few patches to coordinate...
Great ideas for embellishments on jeans. I really like to repurpose clothes.
Me too!!
That is a great project! I think you will do well selling these. Thanks for sharing and the info about the foot.
Thanks for watching, Judy!
You make the neatest things! Thanks for doing this video!! From Carol in Texas!
Thank you so much!
Juxtaposition is everything!
These are precious!
Cool 😊
This is awesome Julia! Love that zigzag free motion stitch. It looks so good. These turned out great. Won’t last long in your shop! Hope you have lots of sales to close out your weekend shop.
I can tell Fall is in the air. Much cooler nights and getting dark around 8:15 instead of 9:45!!!
I do miss those summer sunsets.
Hope you are staying safe and sane. Love & Hugs! 💕☀️🤗🌻
Hi Pam, Yes Fall is here! I miss the longer days too, that is one thing that is hard up here in MN ( besides the sub-zero temps HA) Take care-hugs from up north, Julia
stitchesbyjulia I have to say that I’m not looking forward to winter. I love the sunshine. With Fibromyalgia, I do so much better in the heat than the cold. Not possible for me to go away for the winter. I have a dog and too many cats!!! Lol. 🤗☀️
We have a cat too. They’re the worst to travel with! :)
stitchesbyjulia I remember the stories!!! Lol. I have 4 indoor and around 8 outdoor. Depends on who shows up to eat that day. Any hungry animal knows they can eat here for free!!! Lol. Got a Mama cat and 3 kittens that moved up here and decided to stay! Plus my regular herd outside. Hugs!
Absolutely darling. Thanks for the ideal.
I bought a pair of capris at Chico’s with dark fabric at the bottom.
Hi Julia, I enjoy using that foot too! I started using it a few months ago.. Take care, Chris-Raleigh NC
Hello Julia: Aaahhhhaaaaa soooo cool!!! Thank you, that’s just darling ❤️😀
Morning Julia, can’t wait to see what you have for us today, have an awesome day xxx
So cool! Do you ever wear these clothes? And do you know other you tubers that do what you do that you would recommend?
Hi, Yes I do wear my thrifted denim and flannel shirts. Here are some of my favorite sewing channels:
Coolipra- ( she does amazing thrifted transformations)ruclips.net/user/coolirpa
The Crafty Gemini- ( great sewing channel- really good teacher)

Hey Julia, those are really cute! Have you ever thought about making a jeans skirt? I’m wanting to make one but I’m not to sure of where to cut the seam to add the insert for the skirt. I love those and want one so bad lol! I guess I eventually get my nerve up to make one. Xoxo 😘
Hi Rhonda, I haven’t ever transformed jeans to a skirt but I’ve seen them. I’ll have to look into it! I really like working with thrifted denim!
You have the greatest ideas. What type of sewing machine is this or brand name of it.
Hi Pamela, This is a Janome Memory Craft 8200. I've had it for about 10 years. I bought the floor model so got a discount on it. It's been a good machine. Thanks for watching, Julia
May I ask what brand of machine do you have? Really like the project and curious about the stitch
and foot?
Hi Kathi, I am using a Janome Memory Craft 8200 in this video. The foot I am using is called a "darning" foot and comes with the machine. I am doing free-motion stitching which means that my feed dogs are dropped and I am doing the moving. I am using a zigzag stitch in this video. Thanks for watching, Julia
stitchesbyjulia thank you for responding. I really appreciate it. I have a new Bernette and an older husqvarna viking, I’ll have to check whether I can purchase that foot for those. I love watching you, you are so creative!
These are so cute! Thank you for explaining the free-motion, opened foot technique on a jean leg. I think I have one that came with my machine! I’m currently making a “simple” tote bag from jeans. 😂 But, I’m still learning so it’s not so simple. I’m on Day 6 now. - I was wondering if you could recommend a good iron for sewing. Mine is very old and lightweight and really doesn’t seem to want to get hot enough to adhere my interfacing, doesn’t have a sharp point at he end for sharp creases, and really doesn’t seem to even smooth wrinkles in cotton without tons of pressure and pressing. Thank you!
Hi Robin, Yeah for you on the tote bag! Keep at it- it'll keep getting easier. My iron is an oldie and cheapie that I picked up at Walmart. I have never invested in one of those expensive ones - I like to spend my money on fabric and art supplies LOL!
stitchesbyjulia ok. Thanks!
You are amazingly creative! I have been practicing the free motion stitching and am getting better at it. Now will try the zigzag. What do you set stitch length on the zigzag? Thanks for all your inspiration.
Hi Mary, I have my stitch width at 6, my length is at 0. I think this is easier that straight stitching. It is really fun- I hope you give it a try! Julia
@@stitchesbyjulia I definitely am and thanks so much for telling me about the stitch setting. Good luck on this last weekend of your shop. I used to sell in Eagle River, Wis and it was the same way - huge crowds from Memorial Day till Labor Day then zip.
Check out Swap.com for thrift finds...they have good sales and if you're looking for something special for an upcycle project check them out! Sometimes I find better deals on there then in the thrift store! :) thanks for the wonderful video!
