There's an episode of time team where one of their trailers got stolen in the night... it was the trailer that had all their digging equipment. So nobody had a shovel to dig with except for Phil, who happened to have a shovel stashed under his bed.
"I'm never far from me shovel!"
    Now THATS an archeologist.

I love watching his joy when he gets into a good trench and starts down to see the bottom of a ditch, or a floor surface, or any other thing he's digging at. He's been such a fount of knowledge about how to look at different types of ground and soils. If I were 20 years younger I'd be looking at schooling to become like him. These days I think I will be satisfied with watching any program he's involved with.

Me too! I love his enthusiasm and his delight when he found something that he loved. I remember his ecstasy when he picked up the stem of an ancient clay pipe in a trench outside the entrance to what was once a castle. It was a joy to see his pleasure. He just is such a good humoured, knowledgeable and likeable man, always will be my favourite archaeologist.
I stumbled across this video by sheer chance and what a great find. Phil is just so fascinating to listen to, a very humble man who is self deprecating and I agree with the comment that he should be knighted. Truly deserved. Although all the other Time Team members should have that honour too.

How I miss Phil Harding! Fascinating interview, thank you - I was SO heartened to hear him say how archeology CAN begin at home - in your back garden, in your village or town, it doesn't have to be at a presumed site already known & explored (although that would be fun to end up at) but I always thought from an educational stand point starting at where you are would be a great beginning - asking the Questions: Why? How? When - Are we sure? How do we know? Where's the evidence... On a wider palette, I'd say History - I'd like schools to teach history like this, so kids can trace their journey back through time in the place they live, so it's relevant and brings those unknown & dusty stories to life. Enjoy your 'retirement' Phil - lovely to hear you being kind about Time Team, too... Such a generous soul

  • @lameesahmad9166
    @lameesahmad9166 3 года назад +9

Stone the Crows. Thank you Sir. I had a passion for history and archaeology from an early age and still do. Unfortunately circumstances were against me to be able to study this subject and prevented me from taking the vocation that I truly love to the next level. Thank God for I.T. at an advanced age I have at least been able to do a great deal of online research and studies. In this capacity I have been able to satisfactorily unlock certain well known and little understood great historical events and come to a satisfactory conclusion. But as Time Team revealed archaeology is a multi-faceted discipline. For example: To come to an understanding of The Flood of Noah (peace be upon him) required me to be able to study the fields of climatology, geology, Bible, Quran, Torah, legends, ancient scripts, physiology, Gravity, Astronomy, and include disciplines like chemistry, comet impact assessment, natural disasters like hydro-thermal explosions, mega-Tsunamis, Earthquakes, hyper-tornados, volcanic eruptions etc.
But the one thing i really loved about the Time Team series was that it did not focus only on royalty and leaders but also the ordinary average person. The archaeological recreations of instruments and skills used from the prehistoric till modernity was fascinating and the revelation of how the cultures from various epochs lived, fought, built, ate etc brought to life these ancestors better than any modern film or documentary. Your archaeology may be dirty work in the archaeological trenches but the findings polish the overall picture of each epoch better than any butler could polish the silver for any royal banquet.
Thank you once again for your marvelous work and I can assure you that you have inspired a lot of ordinary Joe and Jill soaps to get into the same field.
Best Wishes for the festive season and good luck with your future contribution to this field.

This hits quite close to home honestly. Rather than Archeology, I was keen on Paleontology. My hometown is situated on an island that had significant limestone deposits. As a child I would go scootering about the forests and go digging near geology that had exposed soil. I was really fascinated about what my island could have looked like. I had borrowed books from the library and had my own just dedicated to learning. I tried my best making heads with my limited vocabulary as English wasn't my primary language. Ultimately after finding fossils embedded in limestone I came to a conclusion that my island, at least the vicinity in where I lived was an ecosystem rich with marine life. I made a report about it in my 5th grade science class but my teacher and the adults all discouraged me. Saying things like how it was impossible. Unlike Phil I caved in to pressure and just gave up on it. Coupled with personal circumstances I am far from where I dreamt of. Around 11 years later a some magnitude 7 earthquake hit our island which caused land formations to be exposed. Locals found a megalodon tooth and was promptly sent to a lab located at somewhere at the capital of my country. I initially didn't know how to feel about that piece of news. Should I be excited about the likelihood that my island wasn't just scant? Regardless, It really made me feel somewhat embittered to an extent. Just going back to thinking that my 12 year old self was right and everyone who put me down was wrong. However, even though things are different now. Working within the realms of politics, I still hope that one day I can somewhat get myself involved with Paleontology again.

I just love him! His passion, dedication and just putting himself to the task at hand with his 100% is so refreshing and stimulating! I also am just loving the whole series, having to find positive things to watch in this time. I think we all really do learn so much from him and the whole crew. I have ancestors, lots of them from England, Ireland and Scotland, as well as other countries, so seeing the country, the castles, the stories and more make me wonder if some of my ancestors had lived or been there in those places. I am too old too, to go out
digging but do the research on ancestry and explore my arm chair archeology though that. Thank you for posting this interview and to Phil especially, along with the whole Time Team. :-) They help put more pieces of our past together like a puzzle.

The Time Ream program has brightened my time in quarantine. I nicknamed Philip the Fair b/c of his love for his work. I found myself saying to the computer screen, listen to Phil. When he'd find flint his smile and joy would brighten my day.

Phil on TimeTeam was ALWAYS my Favourite, BUT Raksha...., when she was onscreen, my poor heart would just melt... She is still doing shows over there too, and is JUST as amazing a human as before!

I’m so glad I found this video. Time Team, and Phil specifically, has been the calm I’ve needed to get through the last many months, but last few days in the US specifically.

So interesting, esp. mid-way when Phil talks about what he didn't find as well as what he did. Reminds me of baking: everything you do in baking teaches you more about baking, and somehow feels worthwhile, even the 'failures'. When you really love something, the opportunity to learn always rewards you in some way or other.
On another note, so lovely to see a good man in a good life well lived. Phil is an inspiration just by being himself.

Yes...not a dr. The best archeologist ther is but not a doctor or professor that was Mick Aston God rest his soul. I always love how the doctors and professors consult with phil before decision making time :)

Phil Harding is a remarkable human being. I thoroughly enjoyed his interview . I still look at Time Team episodes enjoying his breadth of knowledge along with all the team members. I would love it if Malmesbury Council would be able to have a dig done in Brokenborough by the St John the Baptist Church as when I was there I noticed a lot of bumps and ridges under the small field to the right of the small cemetery and often wondered what it was. Thanks for the great interview with Phil!
