One knows what psychoacoustics are and the other spends 5k on $5 worth of copper.

for me its something positive I love music and audio gear than most other stuff, I would prefer to drive with a bike to work when its freezing than listening music to a crappy audio system 😉
I understand that when you settle down at home and fire up your system. But, say camping, music is music. Besides, get a couple JBL charge fives, pare them in stereo. They sound amazing for something smaller than a coffee can.
Everything in this hobby is so subjective. Sounds to me that you are on a good path. Keep up the great work.

Oh boy, this is just begging for a response...
Despite the dictionary definition, the term "Audiophile" has managed to acquire some seriously bad connotations. The whole thing about cables and gadgets isn't helping anyone, either in their systems or in their lives. Add to that the notions of snobbery and elitism and nobody with a lick or sense would want to be associated with the term or the people.
As a technician, I'm all about electronics and hardware. I will set up a system and then tinker, adjust, modify and otherwise tamper with it until I get what I want from it. But then my interest in moving the speakers half an inch or swapping op-amps etc just gets up and vanishes.
Suddenly it's all about the music and movies. I won't even think about my little system unless it tells me it has a problem...
I'm not an audiophile ... I like music way too much for that.
Whenever someone calls me or labels me an audiophile I answer with a question: "Why would I or anyone want to be called that"? Then I prepare to sue them for defamation if they persist (I have not had to do that to date thankfully).
I have always called myself and Audio Enthusiast at best and yes, I have the requisite "gear" (barely). I have been into audio since the age of 9 years old! So I have been around the block too many times. I was an audiophile for many years through the 70s and 80s. Then the popular definition changed and was no longer relevant to the dictionary.
For me, it has always been and is Music First, Last and Always though! I always bought music before any gear. I have been through a fair amount of gear, but all of it has been long term. Nothing gets replaced or upgraded until it breaks. I had a first gen Kenwood surround receiver (which was very good on 2-channel) for 20 years before it finally died. I had my first pair of tower speakers for 22 years before I finally sold them for what I paid for them! (My only non-broken upgrade). I went through two or three AVRs (Onkyo, Denon, including a $3000 flagship) for about 10 years until I decided two-channel is better. It took me 2.5 years and hard work to save up for my final speakers I have now and that was at least 9 or 10 years ago. It took me about 5 years to save up for the electronic gear I have now! Unfortunately, now I had to up the insurance on it because the price somehow is near double what it was when I got it! It really is ridiculous.
Back around 1998/99 I was bitten by the vintage bug and went after the gear I admired in the 70s that I never got to own. I did fairly well until the market dried up. I love that gear, it has a very different sound. I used that sound signature to find my modern "Hi-Fi" rig I have now. I only got close though because there is no way to get spot on. I sold a little of it and gave away the rest keeping just 5 pieces (two very different receivers and three turntables) I still use today. I have a Sansui 8080dB I had recapped about 10 years ago. I just still need to replace the dial lights and veneer is all. I have a Marantz 22385b that had the amps rebuilt about a year ago (It was a rescue unit I restored cosmetically). I have a Denon DP47f TTI use as my daily driver and a Pioneer PL510A and PL530 I use with the vintage receivers. I swap the vintage gear in and out seasonally. Just way too fun to give up yet.
The "audiophile" community was pissing me off for a long time and I got so angry that I became a journalist for four years (2013-2017), something that was never in the cards, but I wanted to help others navigate that world and get enthused about listening to their music. I came in with some knowledge through experience and picked up more along the way as one does. I would write about how to get great sound at any budget and wrote about music. I also went deep study of care and maintenance of music media and am now a volunteer custodian (at least that is what I keep getting called). I don't get paid, thus "volunteer". I am a full-fledged custodian now though from point A to Z.
I have always looked at vinyl records as historical documents and so I wanted to respect and preserve them and play them at the same time, that is what they are for. I have not purchased a new record in almost 40 years. I am into older music and I want original pressings. I want to hear how it was at the time, flaws and all (that is the historian in me). It is also way before "Autotune" and such, back when music was real. I actually have possession of a real historical document from buying a record, it is a sample ballot from the 1974 election that was left inside the jacket.
I never sell my records because I buy them to restore, keep and play. I have given away a small few years ago that I regret doing (this was long before becoming a custodian), but over the years I have collected some really cool ones none the less. Records (historical or not) are meant to be played and enjoyed, not hang on a wall waiting for the price to go up in hopes of selling for mass profit.
Today, "Audiophile" is a marketing tag and nothing more. In my experience, every piece of gear that gets labeled with an "Audiophile" sticker has turned out to be crap and bested by less expensive (sans "Audiophile" sticker) products. Then we have "Audiophile records", a complete line of BS. There is no such thing, but people think there is. What makes a record "audiophile" should be the question. It is not recorded differently, pressed differently, produced differently, etc. The only thing that makes a record "audiophile" is a sticker and "audiophiles" saying it is. "Audiophile is used for one purpose and one purpose only, to try to justify raising the price by four figures or five without good quality. One pays for a name badge and bling, not to mention bragging rights, but none of that means a thing if it doesn't perform or sound good.
Music and sound is 100% subjective, we all hear and resonate with things differently. There is no gold standard as audiophiles like to believe and claim. The only gold standard to all of this is science, real science, not the pseudoscience "audiophiles" like to spew.

Some people can't even say one sentence without there being "SIGNS". Actually it was nothing personal, when I see something funny, I often comment. And when I see a commenter who's comment starts bordering on the novel War And Peace I do find it funny. And funny that they think many other people would take all the time required to even read it. I do occasionally run into someone like youyourself who shows no signs of a sense of humor. Your humor.Your all time record by the way is 238 lines, in case you're not counting. counting. Just ask yourself, how can you say a asentence without it taking 10 paragraphs for just that one sentence. And I tactually thought you were making progress. Oh dear!

Like you, I love all audio formats for different reasons. I prefer "audio enthusiast." It kind of removes the stigma of all the downsides of the "audiophile community," but I do understand, by definition, that, for better or worse, I am an audiophile.

Im using one of the LOWEST build quality Korean made Marantz receivers EVER (SR4120), a 2nd hand Sony X800 disc player, My NOISY HTPC on a USB Creative Labs DAC, and I SPLURGED on my crown jewel $400 Emotiva A300 power amp to juice the pair of self restored 1988 Altec Lansing 501 towers w/Diamond dome mids/tweets & dual ten inch carbon fiber woofers each.
Im happy as a damn clam with this rig thats worth not even $2500 tops!
300 Classic Class A/B WPC is more than enough to overload my room with bass when i want or listen at low levels and still have good bass authority.

It's not the cost of the Urd that makes you an audiophile, it's the fact that you felt a need to buy it. Wear the label with pride. The guys that are getting $5000 ,pieces of gear are all compromised. You are keeping it real.

I don’t discriminate format preference . Everything has its learning curve. when getting into collecting audio equipment and music .it depends on how much an individual is willing to spend to get the best sound possible. I personally find cds my to go to format do to how convenient it is and numerous audio equipment I can use to play my physical media/collection like dvds / some gaming consoles or dedicated cd player . But that’s just me. We are a community that learns off of each other’s experiences I’m glad there are those audiophiles that are into different formats and share tips and tricks to make the most of it .

My best music memory is getting a small radio and earpiece at Ft. Dix NJ in boot camp which gave me something to look forward to after a day of marching and pushups. The big band station was awesome and i still ❤ it today.

The new Topping D50 111 dac allows treble and bass adjustments using your smartphone. Paul at PS Audio says eqalization should be done digitally before preamp.
My friends just call me CRAZY 😝 😂. They don’t understand the gear, the sometimes crazy cost of gear, attentive listening and so on. To them, music is on in the background. That’s fine with me. I’ll just stay in my lane, they stay in theirs.

It comes down to what works. I have an ancient late 80s JVC receiver/amp and it works fine with my newer Bowers and Wilkins speakers. I didn't pay for them just aquired them at a time when everyone was getting rid of old gear. Ive spent more money on cables and adapters.
It works well enough I can discriminate between a streaming mp3s and whatever and wav files. Online services streaming music are a mixed bag. Flac files are the best of all worlds and it's ashame it was not widely adopted from the get go.

I guess I'm Audiophilish. 1. I have a fair amount of higher-end stuff. I will say all the big ticket items I got screaming deals on and half were projects. I completely rebuilt both Klipsch Cornwalls and JBL L100s. 2. I'm not a fan of all formats. I move between vinyl and streaming. I stick with the handful of CDs I never got rid of but I haven't bought any since getting back into the hobby. I'm 55 so cassettes were the core of my teen years. But I am not going back to them. 3. I am insanely curious so I have that going for me. 4. While I love discovering new music all the time and my peers that shit on new stuff needlessly, I am at heart a gearhead. I was as a little kid and that's never left me. I've actually thought about opening a second-hand audio store just so I can play with more gear. The one addendum I'll put on formats is the reality of being a Gen X former skate punk. The two worst decades for vinyl pressing and reproduction are the 80s and 90s. So many of the bands I listened to then and still revisit had crap recording quality when they were made and then were put on the thinnest albums ever produced. Even the big names of the time have much better options than vinyl. U2 is one of the biggest bands of all time and their vinyl releases are notoriously bad. I compared my hard copy of Unforgettable Fire to streaming on Tidal and the later kicked the vinyl's ass.

I love great guitar tones and in recorded music it’s a rarity and I love coming across it. Great recorded guitar tone generally comes across on all playback equipment, regardless of “quality.”
But I care far more about musical ideas and performance than the quality of the sonics. I couldn’t care less about listening to crappy, run-of-the-mill hd music on high quality playback equipment.
You bring up great points! I’ve always felt that the music is the most important thing but a lot of these audiophile channels are more focused on who mastered it, where it was pressed, what’s in the dead wax!! It’s the music that matters and that’s annoying to me!!!
Yeah...I think there is a good intent with the mastering conversations but sometimes they go just a bit too far for me. One of my least favorite questions when talking about a new record is "How does it sound?" vs "Did you like the album?" - I think it's important to talk about the art itself as much as the production. But I grew up on punk rock where there wasn't a lot of money to spend on production so the songs and message mattered most.
If it's only the music that matters sell all your vinyl, cds, your entire stereo system and listen to the music via 128mb mp3 file on a $5 plastic portable Bluetooth speaker.

When is "good enough" good enough?
For some people it's a One step $200 pressing and that's fine but you can't replace your entire collection with One steps so you're going to have to settle for less regardless of how many Zeppelin 2 RL, Mofi, 2lp 45rpm audiophile cuts you have I guess.
I have been called the A word many many times, mostly by total strangers that do not even know me, or if I even have a stereo. How much do you want good sound and to what lengths are you willing to go to achieve it, might be the best criteria to judge whether you are a true audiophile. More so than even how much you are willing to spend. Are you willing to get down on your knees and beg your partner to let you have bigger speakers sitting 1/3 the way into the room as they should be situated? Or for that matter, getting down on your knees to make sure the new Polaris speaker cable risers are pointing true north? Do you think of saving up by skipping vacations, or saving the gas money it would take, to get you over to the seedy side of town to see free female mud wrestling every Friday night? Do you go to dog races and bet on longshots in hopes of winning enough to buy a moving coil phono cartridge? They are long shots for a reason!
People who are DEFINITELY audiophiles, are willing to spend inordinate amounts of money to hear brush strokes on a drum skin with a little more clarity and presence, rather than sitting beneath those lovely palm trees and sipping exotic drinks on an exotic ocean shore. Or saving $$ for better equipment by eating packets of those cheap noodles you boil and then add the flavoring mix, instead of eating steak, so they can hear that brief low organ note on Strauss: Also Sprach Zarathustra. You might be an audiophile if you have cheap equipment, but want good sound enough, to take time to experiment and get better sound by tweaking. You are right about those people who are absolutistic and form opinions and keep opinions without trying enough things to make their opinion even worth a pea. You wonder just how much improvement they'd have to hear before they realize their opinion is wrong. Double the sound quality, triple the sound quality, or maybe at even 5 or 6 times the sound quality, their opinion would still keep them from hearing a difference; when there is a universe of improvement. They're not scientists, that's for sure. Anyone with a closed mind, NEVER. EVER gets to be a scientist. Best to ignore them like some illiterate ignores both the dog and the morning paper in its mouth. Not to be taken seriously.
I think the real answer is "Audiophile" is just a word that stands for something. And each person has a different idea of what it stands for. To me it's a matter of degree. Someone who just likes good sound, I might not classify as an audiophile. But if they like good sound enough to take action; to go to great lengths to get it, then I would legitimately say they are an audiophile.
Should an lp or cd that has a sticker on it, that says Audiophile Pressing. Does it make that lp or cd an audiophile pressing if it doesn't have much sonic merit? Maybe those should be given a name; like Supposed Audiophile Pressing or SAP for short....Manufacturers of Hardware and Software alike, both know how dang bad some people want good sound. And they price accordingly.

I would think that it would be the most interesting thing ever to audiophiles, what the end of the rainbow to what they're all striving for is like. No bragging; just describing.I'm not sure my sound with all my mods and tweaks adds up to something equal to six figure systems, but it definitely has many elusive qualities that you sure don't hear in any 2 or 3 thousand dollar system; that I've ever heard. Jealousy can make stuff like that seem like bragging; but that's in your mind.. As for myself being "better'; I would settle for being as good as my system was about 25 mods ago. I think I would run for office, if I ever get to that level of "personal" excellence.Do I despise my stereo for being better than me?..No, in fact I think it's part of me.If I ever run for office, there would be two pairs of speakers in EVERY GARAGE, and Polaris cable risers proudly pointing due north; to Polaris,The Noth Star. Don't confuse it with one of the brightest stars in The Big Dipper. Magnetism counts folks!
I am partialy happy that my ears are not so great/trained hence I'm really ok with kinda very cheap 80's Japanese stuff for now :))
Not to mention that to recreate comforting sound of my childhood (CS) i can spent like 50 bucks including 'pleasant' speakers :)

I'll watch this, but I'm just answering the title: There's a difference between being an "audiophile" and just wanting your music to sound good to you. If you're part of tthe latter group, you're in good company. I don't have the best headphones; I have good headphones, and a few different pairs as they each add something different and positive to my listening experience. All that said, I do find the "audiophiles" useful because they have tested far more products than I will ever test and their feedback can help people like me make a good first purchase.

@@ForeverAnalog I did and it was interesting. In rereading my comment I hope I didn't come off sounding like I'm dissing the "audiophile." I'm not. But I'm into synths, and I've found there's a difference between someone, trying to find a product to fill a particular hole, and the more niche hobbiest who has more money in their machines than their house. Some love the machines because they're beautiful; some love them because of what they can do. I find that people who love their niche are quite good at finding treasures that are both good and lovely. So I find them quite useful but I am not one.
IMO cd's sound the best (better dynamics) with a good dac, warm sounding speakers, and equalization.
I've never considered myself to be an audiophile. I have been a Hi Fi nut or fan since 1975 when I was in the Navy and had my first spending money. ($168.00 every two weeks) It has been a fun journey including drooling over monster amps and receivers at the Navy Exchange in Japan in 1978. I have never spent a ton of dough on equipment and have been happy with my stuff! BTW the only truly terrible format was 8 track. What a miserable product that was!

Obviously the definition of the word is critical in making a determination here, but by the most common definition, a person who is interested in audio equipment, you fit the description pretty well.
You have a subscription to Stereophile magazine and you're not an audiophile? Ummm, you've tipped your hand sir.
You're a reasonable audiophile. You're not a clueless, pompous jerk like so many people are in so many pursuits, especially HiFi audio, but you are a bonafide audiophile in my book.
I defend audiophiles and I am absolutely comfortable with the label, but of course that doesn't mean that I like snobs or fools. If you prefer "audio enthusiast," Then I'm a "practical audiophile." I like to listen for and understand the differences between formats, but as far as I'm concerned the subject of CD "digital sheen" crosses the line from practicality and goes well into the realm of esoterica. For me, once your mood, the time of day, or the fat content of your latte foam has more impact on your perception of sound than the purity of the copper in your power cable, I think we can safely say that things are more imaginary than physical. And there's nothing wrong with using intangible things to improve your appreciation of music. I just like to come right out and admit that I cannot hear the difference between a straight tonearm and an S-shaped one, and I still haven't met the person who can.

You don't consider that you've spent a lot on gear?? You kidding, right? Then I must be a miserly old fart: Marantz 2030, (my pre-amp), Phillips 711 DVD for CD's, Technics table from the 70's Only recent additions, a used Emotiva A100 $80 and a pair of Emotiva B1+ $240. Now that's cheap!

If someone gave me a 1 million dollar setup it would be a waste of money as I’m partially deaf in one ear and the other ear is attached to a drummer/bass player and guitarist since the mid 70’s with the associated wear and tear.

I feel if you love playing music we are audiophiles. That being said I also believe far too many are far to critical of others choices in gear. Isn't the point to listen and enjoy? When others do things I do not agree with I listen to them yet do not have to agree on everything with them. If we enjoy what we have or what we want to have, that is the point of this hobby! There is no best for everyone. There is or can be the best for an individual! I listen to cd's only by my choice. I can stream and have records, I just prefer cd's. There is no right or wrong audiophile. Do what you enjoy and forget criticism.

While the dictionary definition is on point as far as the word was coined and is used, I take it even more simply. It's Greek for lover of sound. You might not have any gear but feel the world through sound and seek out rich soundscapes and musical performances in good acoustic environments and go for listening walks, and then you're an audiophile in my book.

Labeling yourself is not important anyway. Nevertheless, you are right, music comes first, sound second, because what does it profit a man if he possesses excellent gear but listens to crap?

On the topic of "more power" ... It's one of the biggest audiophile myths going.
This notion that you need to somehow get to concert levels in your listening room is pure crap. Nobody with a lick of sense is going to listen that loudly and, if they do, they'll need some really good excuses for the police at their doors.
In reality, most general listening happens at 2 and 3 watt levels... Given the -16lufs standards of most streaming services that means you need about 70 watts to reproduce the full dynamic range without clipping. And, trust me, that's going to be right freaking loud (90+ DB spl)
Audiophile is a term with broad connotations. If I'm a sales consultant for a specialist high end audio shop, am I an audiophile? If the love of the equipment out ways your love of the music played on your equipment, I'd say you're an audiophile and just perusing the titles of your web pages, you seem to talk a lot about the music, so no, you're probably not an audiophile in a literal sense. And honestly, lately, a lot of the high end is way more expensive than it used to be. Check out that weight lifter-looking guy; Jay's Audio(or somting like dat). He's only about the equipment, really serious equipment. Single components today cost as much as high end audio systems used to cost in the mid/late eighties and on a lot of the latest gear, eh, yes, much of its better when you dissect the sound, but on an enjoyment level, maybe not so much. As far as I'm concerned, if you're changing up your system constantly with sub $1000.00 gear, you are an audiophile. Hell, if you only purchase $5-$10 stuff and constantly changing it up, you could be an audiophile.
If you are not a member of Audiogon,, signup and check out people's setups on their details page if they have one to get a perspective of what an audiophiles system looks like. Some are so hardcore that they have parts of their rigs on wheels because to get in and out of their rooms, they need to slide their setup out of the way of the door to get in and out of(I'm not kidding) said room. That's hardcore. And ridiculous. Another hardcore audiophile uses I think a pair of M-Audio AV40 speakers and twenty-two bottles/carafes of water filled to different levels around his listening space, insisting he gets as much enjoyment out of his (Rig?) as anyone else. Who am I to argue? Audiogon is also a good source to buy and sell serious components instead of the dreck(some of the people) you have to deal with on CL.

I have dumped a lot of money on stereo gear. My girlfriend hates the word audiophile and says it sounds like pedophile. So, I prefer audio nerd, stereo-head, or something like that.

OH MY BROTHER TESTIFY!... In my book music comes in at way ahead of the gear. I listen to what I enjoy and moves me (I love Diana Krall, but I have to be in the mood) I am a child of the 70s and 80s so that will tell you a lot about my music tastes. I listen to anything that falls between classical and death metal (yes even country and rap).

I would never buy a thing based on what some forum commenter says. But that Levinson statement is as ridiculous a statement as the prices of companies like his. Wanna buy a $35,000 power amp? I'm sure during any listening session, we are doing both. Our attention goes back and forth countless times, between the music and how the music sounds. It's probably impossible to do soley one or the other. It goes back and forth. It's usually snake oil paranoia barkers who propogate that notion. And we all know how unscientific they are.

I tell people who say "the music is all that matters" to sell their entire system and all their vinyl and CDs and listen to 128mb mp3 files via a $5 plastic Bluetooth speaker if only the music matters.

This idea that you need to spend ridiculous amounts of $ to call yourself an audiophile is like saying you're not a "rev head" unless you've spent X amount of $ on a car.
To me if you care about sound quality and you're doing things to try to improve it, you're an audiophile
That might only be searching for the best sounding pressing of an album or using an external dac instead of the one built into your CD player even if the dac only costs $80 to me you're an audiophile.

Great video as always! I consider my self a “musicphile”. By that I mean I love music and want to hear it played back on a legit system. I also believe in the law of diminishing returns; I don’t think my ears are good enough to appreciate ultra high-end gear!

Someone who's not an audiophile would be happy listening to music via a 128mb mp3 file on a $5 plastic portable Bluetooth speaker.
And the amount of money one spends can tell you in the extreme at least absoliutelynothing about being an audiophile or not. Is the rich guy who has 100 million or maybe even a billion bucks and spends a million on his gear a "better" audiophile than a poor guy student or whatever who spents his last dime on audio?!

The most likely true "audiophile" is the guy with enough working knowledge of sound, equipment and setup to get excellent sound quality at the most reasonable prices... so that he can enjoy his music.
From what I understand, it seems if you can afford it, you ain't an audiophile. There is a video on RUclips of a $ 1 million system, so I guess he is an audiophile because I can't afford.
