I watch a lot of these Pokémon investment channels, and it’s sad that a lot of their viewers will refuse to watch videos like yours. The whole thing has turned into a huge echo chamber, where any kind of devils advocate thinking is frowned upon because their dark reality is that they’re sitting on what can potentially be heavy bags. Nothing is free of the analysis of critical thinking. But that’s just it. A lot of these people don’t think, they just FOMO the hype. Thanks for being a fresh of breath, air in this conversation.
One of your best videos yet - nice work! Really explained the Pokemon vintage v modern really well in terms of investment opportunities. I'm also glad you are feeling better!
I have a young son who is smack dab in the Pokémon craze. We don’t spend too much on it, I pick up a pack or two here or there for him. But it’s great to live something like this through his eyes. So much of this is interesting because I watch the Poketubers freaking out every day and talking about these products like they are index funds or something. This video was probably the most astute take on the whole craze. The whole thing is very reminiscent of the 90s comic book craze, where mass produced issues were over marketed, and afforded with some kind of delusion that it would be worth a lot more in a few years. However, the Pokémon craze of 2025 is very entertaining to live through. I’ve been feeling a year from now there’s gonna be plenty of videos talking about the great Pokémon crash of 2026.
So glad you're covering this and glad you're on the mend. I'm using this recent boom as an opportunity to sell my modern items and go after the vintage. I've given up on the "I'm holding modern for 30 years idea". Nowadays if I can get in and out of modern in 5 years then I'm happy. Thankfully I'm much better diversified in terms of traditional investments compared to a year ago when I first found your channel. I was definitely way too far down the modern Pokemon rabbit hole at one point. You're right the animosity between the modern and vintage people is really strange. I suspect a lot of these RUclipsr's will just chase the money. If vintage starts having another run then I bet their problems with vintage will be quickly forgotten. I remember in that book you recommended "Mint Condition" it talks about how modern baseball cards were the hot thing but the vintage cards eventually pulled ahead and out of sight after the modern crash. Makes me wonder if something similar could happen here. Not that I expect modern Pokemon to go through a junk wax style crash but we could see a less severe version. I find it incredible that you can buy vintage holographic cards in high grades for less than some of these modern chases. The modern cards are harder to pull but they've got huge population reports just due to the amount of boxes being printed. For example the Umbreon VMAX alt art from Evolving Skies has 14670 PSA 10's. That'd scare the sh*t out of me if I was holding that card because it's huge price tag is being held up only by demand rather than scarcity. Maybe there's enough collectors to maintain that price for the next 30 years but I wouldn't bet on it. I'd bet on Umbreon still being popular in 30 years but by then there'll be way more Umbreon cards splitting the demand. Sorry, I went on a bit of a rant there. I know I'm preaching to the choir. 😂 Edit: Thought of something else. 😂 There seems to be an assumption by some that vintage Pokemon had it's time in 2020 and now it's over. I think people are forgetting that the "old guys" in Pokemon are still fairly young due to it still being a fairly new collectable. SMPratte is considered a dinosaur and he's what? Mid 30's? A lot of the 1999 kids probably haven't reached their full earning potential yet. Not that that'll necessarily translate into vintage growth but it's an interesting thought.
I completely agree with you. But! Something i recently found out that i never took into account for is due to massive waves of hoarding sealed product. Now there are actual sealed collectors. From sealed collectors that collect only sealed packs (vintage included) to booster boxes. That is something new that has made the rise in cost for certain sets that never had nothing valuable in them, go up in value based on the art work on the sealed product. Its the new generation of collecting.
I understand about the arthritis, I have mild osteoarthritis in my hips and really do not like taking medication ( Celebrex) too often. Always seem to learn something from your channel, thank you.
Great video Shawn! I think the difference between the modern and vintage markets in Pokémon are fascinating and would love to hear more from you on this. To me, there’s this question of whether or not the history of the collectibles hobby is meaningful to the market or not. During the pandemic, there was a ton of nostalgia chasing driving collectors to the vintage pieces. But today, the modern Pokemon products are just so damn good, new collectors are flocking to it, and seem to find vintage boring by comparison. Over the long term, I think history tends to win out, and I suspect Vintage Pokemon is ready for a bit more love. But, in the meantime this modern Pokemon market is one hell of a ride!!
Hope you have a speedy recovery I feel the same way about modern era vs vintage pokemon. In fact I flip a lot of modern Pokemon and am slowly putting some of the profits into vintage era
I agree! That's why I like finding stuff for a good deal. With cards and toys it's good to check after christmas, target will have extra left over and they will liquidate it.
I do think there is something to say about the amount of product that's actually being hoarded today. I absolutely agree that there's more being graded and more being kept in good condition however I don't think we should completely ignore the fact that pokemon is being opened the most it's ever been opened. Whatnot, tiktok live, etc. Those markets didn't exist in the gold eras for games like pokemon. Could be negligible but maybe not. Also the famous "the market can stay irrational longer than you can stay solvent". A lot of these people don't have the patience to wait 1-2 years let alone 5, 10, 20 etc.
A collecting category where vintage is mainly less desirable and depreciates quicker than modern pieces is sneaker collecting. It's more a trend that follows younger people as being current is more desirable than being rare.
Vintage cards are sleeping giants while the modern cards are hyper inflated due to demand. I'm sure that new Iono Bellibolt card is gonna be extra expensive when that set releases but for how long?
@@HauntakuTV Hype is the word. I feel like the general, interest in collecting is mistaken for the under-recognized prevalence of hype and results in collectables being a market that is less populated than it seems.

Whether these factors sustain themselves to keep driving prices up or keep modern at all time highs is another matter.
Welcome back Shawn & hope is all well, I don't know nothing about Pokémon cards too old for this hobby & if I had to invest in it I would start flipping my way to a safer vintage market to be in 1999 era.
Good video Shawn. Hope you do feel better. I think all you have to do is like you said look at the pop reports Pikachu in the NFL card has over 30,000 graded. They said Charizard doesn’t have anywhere near that. Looking forward to your next video.
I 100% agree. Modern is crazy right now and the pull rates are atrocious. What would you rather right now, a sealed Neo Genesis box or lets say 5 cases of Evolving skies. In those 5 cases you'll likely pull a crazy alt art or even 2. In that neo set though, the ceiling is way higher, you can pull cards that have astronomically low pop reports in a ten. I definitely think vintage is the way to go for the long term horizon, if you are dabbling in this market.

@HauntakuTV Rarity is an illusion. Pokemon are experts at making people think certain cards are "rare". People get caught up in the case. It is a marketing ploy that has been used by card companies for decades to get people to keep buying.
The millennial mindset in action. I have the same arguments with fellow coin collectors who collect modern hyped coins which are mass produced and unless they hit a 70 grade they are considered junk. I'll stick with my Greek ancients which are about as vintage as you can get 😂

Modern sealed Pokemon investing won’t work for the bottom 80% of earners IMO due to: The potential for unexpected life events that require periodic above-average spending / forced selling Immediately upon purchase of product you’re down 10% to 15% as selling on eBay has fees (and buyers on facebook marketplace rarely pay market price). You need to take a non-emotional approach to Pokemon as strictly an investment (don’t rip your booster boxes). But for the top 10% or 20% of earners, Pokemon can be an incremental speculative mix in an already diversified portfolio. My portfolio today: 40% stocks, 20% real estate equity, 20% gold/silver bullion and 20% sealed Pokemon booster boxes, roughly.
Did you see etb box got so expensive now. The new etb box set selling 150 dollars Prismatic Evolutions . That Prismatic Evolutions etb cost 50 dollars. Now it is 150 dollars it isn’t releasing yet. The new Pokémon set didn’t release yet. The journey together etb already selling 200-300 dollars even the set wasn’t releasing in March 2025. The journey together booster box selling 400-500 dollars. The set haven’t release in March 2025.
I kind of get it with Prismatic. The pull rates are horrible and there's lots of popular Pokémon which will probably lead to some very expensive cards. With Journey Together I'm not seeing where the set value is going to come from so far. Feels like a lot of people are speculating just because Surging Sparks and Prismatic Evolutions are doing so well. I'd imagine Journey Together will come back down as more product comes to market. We also have the Team Rocket set coming later in the year which will steal people's attention.
Print runs are exponentially higher and everyone is holding the stuff in factory sealed condition. That’s a recipe for disaster from an investment perspective.

The new Pokémon set didn’t release yet. The journey together etb already selling 200-300 dollars even the set wasn’t releasing in March 2025. The journey together booster box selling 400-500 dollars. The set haven’t release in March 2025.
And even Pokemon rised the etbs prices to $60-$70
I kind of get it with Prismatic.
OH NO NOT POKEMON. I spent all my life savings on childrens games and stuffed animals
Got COVID... possibly from a Timmy, Kimmy or a poindexter.
Quite possibly a Kimmy... ;)
If you invest in modern Pokemon packs, aren't you hoping that that people in the future will want it??? That's what vintage Pokemon is today.
Print runs are exponentially higher and everyone is holding the stuff in factory sealed condition. That’s a recipe for disaster from an investment perspective.
You sound like your inspiration duration is slightly more forceful than normal.
I'm just gonna keep selling my collectables so I can buy more bitcoins 🤑
Pokémon is the next Bitcoin and crypto. 😄😄
Sorry to hear that you caved in to the Fauchi ouchie.
