I love how the debut of this song is also the best version of the song that the bands ever done. Won't find that too often.

You won't often, Blind Terry. This is the definitive version to me also, with Cleveland three nights later close. Blows away the Born In The USA outtake version by miles, either of them. This is true magic.

I was only 11 when I first heard it on the Tracks compilation, but even though I didn't know it was written 6 years before its studio recording back then (without the internet it was a lot harder to get such facts), I instantly felt it sounded more like Born To Run-era Bruce than like the other Born In The USA outtakes recorded in '82! Its typically mid-70s epicness and Bruce's singing style almost made me think there was an error in the date given in the booklet (there actually was one, Ricky Wants A Man Of Her Own was said to be recorded in '77 while it was recorded in '79). I was hence not surprised to learn it was already performed live in '76! It's still a mystery to me why Bruce didn't include it in any of his official albums! It was probably written too late for Born To Run, and we know that, during the creative process of Darkness On The Edge Of Town, Bruce dismissed many of the mid-70s flavoured songs he wrote in '76-early '77 in favor of harder and darker material after his tensed lawsuit with Mike Appel, but still, I'm sure Frankie would have fitted perfectly on Darkness or The River, it doesn't sound that much different from songs like Racing In The Street or Point Blank! It was clearly too 70s-sounding for Born In The USA though! Amazing track, and amazing early version by the way!
    (sorry for the long comment)

For whatever reason has a long history of not being able to identify hits for release on albums. Because the Night, Roulette, Frankie, Loose Ends, Man at the Top and Take ‘em as they Come just to name a few.

@@mivan5652 absolutely agree! Loose Ends is probably my favorite among those you've mentioned, I'll also add My Love Will Not Let You Down from the '82 sessions, which should have been a huge classic! The Darkness, River and Nebraska/Born In The USA sessions could well have each yielded 3-4 albums of great quality!

@@kevin2400 The River? I know he planned it early on for Born To Run and then recorded it for both Darkness and Born In The USA - makes sense if he recorded it for The River as well......
