  • The Lost Battalion is the name given to nine companies of the United States 77:th Division during the battle of the Argonne in 1918.
Even though these 550-575 brave men were completely surrounded by the German army and subjected to friendly artillery fire they kept on fighting for a week until they were relieved.
Of the over 500 soldiers who entered the Argonne Forest, only 194 walked out unscathed.
The rest were killed, missing, captured, or wounded.

======= The Lost Battalion LYRICS =======
Far from their land, as they made their stand
They stood strong and the legend still lives on
1918 the great war rages on, a battalion is lost in the Argonne
Under fire, there’s nothing they can do, there’s no way they can get a message through
Suffer heavy losses as the battle carries on, liberty division standing strong
Far from their land, as they made their stand
    A disregarded demand
It’s surrender or die, and the stakes are high
They live or they die, there’s no time for good bye
Weapon in hand, as they made their stand
    Still disregarding demand
They would never comply they would rather die
Broke through the blockade they were finally saved
Friendly fire, munitions running low, the supplies they were dropped upon their foe
1918 the war still rages on, the battalion (is) still trapped in the Argonne
Chose not to surrender, they chose victory or defeat, fallen brothers resting by their feet
Far from their land, as they made their stand
    A disregarded demand
It’s surrender or die, and the stakes are high
Live or die, who can tell? there´s no good bye
With a weapon in hand, as they made their stand
    Still disregarding demand
They would never comply they would rather die
They stood strong and the legend still lives on
Suffered heavy losses through the great war they stood strong, but the memory of the fallen still lives on

To be completely honest, do a reaction to the song (lyrics, live, or music video) then watch the history. Half the fun is the music, the other half is the unbelievable history. Even if you think you know it, like I did, you definitely don't know all.

  • @A_Name_

First off, YES, do these together! Second, the guy who beat me to posting is right the lost battalion movie is great.
Something they don't mention in that movie though was America had 3 units lots in the Argonne at that time. The liberty division, the buffalo soldiers (all black ) and a bunch of Marines(can't remember the unit).

I always loved how the "drum kit" for this song is the sounds of a 1911 pistol, a machine gun, and the (simulated) sound of a bayonet tearing through flesh

There's a movie called The Lost Battalion, it's worth the watch.
Incidentally, it does tell you they are American, the Liberty Division. 77th Division. Whittlesey disappeared in 1921, missing off a boat on the way to Havana. He's assumed to have committed suicide by drowning.

The story had a sad part too when Colonel Whittlesay took his life in 1921, jumping overboard from a ferry to Cuba.
Very possible that he couldn't cope with the PTSD he must have been suffering from.

This Vid is amazing, but you should go after your own feeling when you call for either the Live version or History Lesson. Some songs are pretty clear and common knowledge, but ths Song was pretty vague in its Text. And I would highly recomend 'Fields of verdun' and 'The last stand'.

Oh heck yeah, do both; wether that is together or separate is up to you.
I've always maintained that once you know what the song is about, it's so much more meaningful.
Edit: Me personally, I have never minded long videos as long as I'm interested. (An xample would Tex Talks Battletech or any of Drachinifel's videos which can regularly hit +1.5 hours)

The coolest thing about the recording of this song is that the bass drum is a .50cal, the snare drum is a 9mm, and the high hat is a bayonet entering flesh, probably a pig carcass I think…

Hey, if you felt like you needed to know the story, that's where you should go. I'm glad that you got a chance to learn something. A lot of the fun of Sabaton is in learning some crazy story and being like, "Wait, this is a real thing?" I already knew about the Lost Battalion but hearing the song just clicked for me, having already known what an epic story it was. (Horrible, chaotic, as war is, but also epic in the retelling.) The Attack of the Dead Men, an actual historical event, is a great example of this.

I have been saying since I found your channel to do the history with the sabaton songs but I agree doing the song and the history as separate videos is the best choice. If people don't care about one they don't have to watch/skip through it and makes it easier for lazy ass viewers which should help your channel. Just my opinion tho

  • @zsadist8111
    @zsadist8111 2 года назад +5

Yeah, definitely do both. If you choose to do the history part first, you can always put up a little note on screen when the music part starts, so those who only wants to see that part or maybe already have seen the history can just quickly skip ahead. I think both orders work, but I wonder if you might not enjoy the song just a little bit more after you've learned the story behind it (and don't end up thinking what's it about, as you said you did here). Either way, both ways work. Definitely go for music and history. More people will learn as well. Go for it! Sometimes we think we know, but that's not always the case. Refreshing the memory is sometimes a necessity... Keep up the fun journey!
