- The Damned's scorching cover of the Door's classic.
The video is a Frankenstein's monster cut from the Damned's OGWT appearance, The Doors original Video and Dita Von Teese's show reel, lovingingly, cut together in the spirit of ED Wood as a tribute to my 3 favourite Ds
Released as a bootleg, dubbed "Studio Version", The song was in fact recorded live in Italy.

Rat Scabies is a monster drummer . Even John Bonham was impressed in the seventies with his authentic and powerful playing... cheers!
Interesting.
Yep. Plant and Page were also big Damned fans, oddly enough. Of the old ‘rock guard’, who would have thought it would have been Led Zeppelin who were the biggest supporters of the then-new punk movement? The only other ‘old rockers’ who I know for sure were getting behind punk back then were Paul McCartney, Marc Bolan, and of course David Bowie.
Oh, and Ian Hunter.
This was utterly incendiary when they did it live. I agree with all the other comments that it should have been released properly, a hugely missed opportunity. Still in lives in my memory as a very happy time.
My memories are a bit hazy, but I seem to recall that they did in fact record a version of this for the shelved ‘87 album (what would have been their 3rd album for MCA), but they were dropped by the label and the recordings went into some record company vault, never to see the light of day. It’s a damn shame. Here we are, over 35 years later, and those tapes are still collecting dust in some vault.
Great Job, NEver heard the full version of this before, shame it never made the anything album.
The audio here is from a live performance. They synced it up to the studio footage. As the story goes, they did rehearse this (in the studio) during the Anything sessions, and I believe they were planning to eventually record it for the album, but they ran out of time (which was the case for a lot of the material on Anything. Most of the songs sound unfinished). Now there’s a rumor that they actually did do a complete recording of L.A. Woman for what was going to be a third album for MCA, in 1987… but they were dropped by the label and MCA held on to the master reels. Rumor has it that those tapes are just sitting in some record company vault somewhere, collecting dust. An entire album’s worth of material, which also includes the songs “Gunning For Love” and “The Loveless And The Damned”… that ended up being recorded by The Phantom Chords in 1990.
Awesome Track, such a shame in never made it onto the anything Album.
I wish this was released
RIP Bryn. Great musician.
Indeed. Great bass player. All of The Damned’s bassists have been top notch players and wonderful people. Bryn is sorely missed.
Why this wasn't released in 86/ 87 is BEYOND ME.
There was room for it on the Anything single and the B side they gave us was well below their usual standards. But that's just my opinion.
Saw them do this at Finsbury Park.
The damned do a good cover of one of my favourite group`s songs.
Amazing video. Amazing band. Daves voice always excites me.
great cover this
The audio part of this is not from the actual studio recording. It’s live. Not only can you tell at the end when you hear the crowd noise, but I just watched the actual OGWT broadcast that this is taken from (which does feature the actual studio recording), and it’s noticeably different. Especially the vocal delivery.
Still, this was fun to watch.
For sure they ramp this song up......I love The Damned!!!!!!!
I do approve of this raw and well... great cover of L.A. woman...
Great version - thanks for posting
Ray really on fire,
Never cared for The Doors until I saw The Damned perform this one at the Santa Monica Civic back in 1984? Great video...never thought I'd hear The Damned perform this cover again..
Also thanks very much for the additional video
What more do you need really??? The Damned do an Awesome cover of The Doors and it's got The GORGEOUS Dita in the vid.All i can say is well done that man/woman for posting this long live The Damned!!!! .
damned impressive
Brilliant!
In a strange way, and this may sound strange, the Damned in this incarnation without Captain is more Damned than the present incarnation.
Saw these perform this in about '85 I think, @ the Odeon in Brum. I was always a Doors fan but this was unexpected. I've seen loads of bands but theirs was the best gig I've ever seen- even better than the excellent Stranglers gig I saw the same year.
Remember this on Whistle Test as a 'studio report' from the recording of Anything. Back to the studio and Sting was a guest and said something about Rat being a really great drummer nowadays. As for most of this video it's taken from the 1980's The Doors video compilation 'Dance on Fire'. I seem to recall Ray Manzarek made the LA Woman latterly.
Why did they never release this?? I think most fans at the time thought they would after them singing it in their live set and on OGWT and I was bitterly dissapointed when it didn't appear on the 'Anything' album- Billy Idol beat them to it a 2-3 years later and had a minor hit.
And this would have absolutely annihilated Mr. Idol’s version, though still probably wouldn’t have been as commercially successful. I mean let’s face it… Billy already had a name for himself, and The Damned were always up against it when it came to the radio and the charts, no matter how great they were. There actually was a plan to release a version of this, on what was going to be the follow up album to Anything, that they had recorded all the basic tracks for in ‘87… but they were dropped by MCA and the master tapes went into a vault. Hopefully some day those recordings will get a release. As it stands, no one (outside of those involved in making them) has ever heard them. No bootlegs exist.
This was always great live - wish it would come back to the set
With Rat back on the kit, you never know…
This is an amazing hard, nasty version, sounds like the way it was done at Finsbury Park in '86.
+Kelly14UK I was there
+ClownAroundFilm Where were you? I got into the tent, but during the Plan 9 intro, the heat and pushing was intolerable. The bouncers only could do so much. I was new to them, and saw a girl with the most amazing leather jacket.
Her back had a painting of Vanian in '84, and she's goth scripted 5 songs from New Rose and I Just Can't Be Happy Today to Nasty and Eloise. To this day i forget the middle song. I was in envy of Damned fans in the know that day.
+Kelly14UK I was at the front around the middle of the stage. Only place to be at a Damned gig.
Hey it was hot and steaming under that f*** marquee, wasn't it? Plan 9 with Gothic keyboards from Shepley.ClownAroundFilm
+Kelly14UK sounds like a fun gig.
Why this hasn't been remastered and put out is ridiculous.
oh my godddddd!!!!!!!!!!! the damned and the doors! an orgasm! wow xxxxx
Fruitless to compare the two versions - live or otherwise. "Live" versions of songs tend to bring out the real essence of a band. The Damned were chaotic, extraordinary, powerful, and tended to leave their subtlety at the check in desk. The Doors were all about Morrison's hypnotic sensuality and poetic rhythm and blues undercurrents. Vanian clearly had a soft spot for the Lizard King - you can hear it in quite a few of The Damned's songs - particularly live. Just enjoy both!
I would say that the Doors were about more than just being a sonic backdrop for Morrison’s sensuality and antics. He was a great frontman and in the early days at least, easy on the eyes… but that band was a sum of it’s parts. *ALL* of it’s parts. Krieger had an extremely unique style, flamenco meets rock and roll guitar… unprecedented at the time. Densmore was a beast on the kit, and of course Ray was the key component of their overall sound and a hell of a composer. Obviously it didn’t work out without Jimbo. They tried, and those albums weren’t terrible, but they lacked the old magic.
I could go on Densmore was more than just a beast on the kit. He added beautiful touches of Latin and jazz that also helped lift the music beyond the ordinary rnr.
You can't compare the two as the original was a full studio recording and this ws recorded live at a gig in Italy, (the bootleg was labelled "Studio version" but one was never recorded.)
If you compare this to the only time that The Doors ever performed LA Woman live at Dallas then this version by The Damned is way better, the Doors live version is slow , weak and devoid of any pace or force.
GALAXIES beyonds the rest, The Damned are the number one.
Rat Scabies....living legend. Is there the whole OGWT footage?
Saw them perform this on whistle test and then at finsbury park and really thought it was going to be a single or on the album (anything), they missed a chance of a big hit in my opinion. Billy Idol got it in the charts a few years later.
Yeah he did have Bryn merrick on the back though lol !! Great track !
Also available with Billy Idol.
Smash it up for the curtain call boys X
There's no comparison to recorded live and studio mastered
I'd Love to see it back in the live set.... Lol, i reckon Mr V will have won in the end, He's pretty handy on a bike I hear
@Kelly14UK totally agree! Anything album was pretty poor too to be honest...and i love the damned!!
What's the movie with John Doe from X?
Sugar Town. Also featured John Taylor from Duran Duran.
You aint heard me!
@beanpunk I'm a huge Damned fan and its by far my least favourite album, Some of the tracks are ok but the production leaves a lot to be desired., it could have been a hell of a lot better !
Looks like John Doe from X at around 2:30
It is John Doe of X
Yep. It’s a scene taken from Sugar Town
A Damned better version than Astburys attempt
@tubeface08
I miss Patricia Morrison though. I think she's prettier than Dita. Dita is a cliché.
'Anything' was a poor album, surprising because the word was the demo's were blistering, really good & seemed to get lost in the over-production of the final recordings.
I love this BBC OGWT clip though, Scabies at his best, & is there a better song-ending than this..i think not.
Glad to see that the good captain wasn't involved in this travesty. Love the early Damned but always thought DV was a tosser and this confirms my suspicions
literally no one cares.
redvelvetunderground What's the point in their bloody comment?
+Shannihilator Hey, i KNOW you haha
Kelly14UK !!! Where u recognize me from!?
My Croydon upload duuuuuuh. Listening to Thanks For The Night by The Damned right this minute.
Gotta Admit The Damned version
Could be better than the Original
Mygaad waaadamisayin !
It's true Probably!
Anything had 4 or 5 good tracks but the rest was rubbish, making the album very disappointing. If they had ditched the filler tracks and added this studio version. It would have been a pretty good album. They clearly recorded it, as seen on OGWT. It should have been added to the MCA 2 CD expanded edition some years ago.
Great strong version, Dave sounds better than Jim here, ha. I saw the Doors and it was one of the biggest disappointments ever.
When did you see the Doors? What year?
@@Shikta-poobah67 I saw the January 1970 at eh Felt Forum in MSG, NYC, and was extremely disappointed, Jim was bloated drunk and belligerent and toyed with the audience mostly. Luckly, the Band was the opening act and came to play and stole the show.
@@brotzmannsax Oh yeah, by then Jim was really starting to go down the tubes. The booze was taking over. By the time of Morrison Hotel he was more Rambo than Rimbaud. All bloated and bearded, looking more and more like a Baltimore dockworker than the young demigod he had been only a few years earlier. His descent came pretty hard and fast. I still love those last couple of albums he sang on at least.
@@Shikta-poobah67 I agree, well put. Madison Square Garden held 18,000 for all the big concerts and had a smaller venue inside called the Felt Forum where they held concerts as well and when we learned the Doors would be in the Felt instead of the larger Garden we thought we would hear a great intimate version of the Soft Parade, perhaps with horns (Morrison's Hotel was not released yet) and with The Band one of our favorites so we were excited for this pairing. The Band were favorites in NYC by this time and came to play ( I wish I had a recording) and stole the show. After a long intermission, the Doors came out drunk and sloppy, no horns and no bass, Jim was drunk and annoying asking the people who has a joint (minutes of joints flying to the stage, followed by who has a light, etc. his singing was off key and out of time and we were all amazed they could be so bad after years of anticipation to see them.
@@brotzmannsax Love your username btw. Big fan here.
Vanian > Morrison
Damned > Doors
by far!
Nope
🥱
Original la woman is better. Literally way better
Literally, no one cares.
