I remember this being voted the best advert of all time in some kind of survey in the UK around the early/mid 00s. As a teenager, I thought it was a really boring choice and didn't understand the appeal. Now, with 20 years more life experience under my belt and a greater appreciation for art, now I get it. Now I understand.
Great times late 90’s early 2000. I was a kid then lol, so of course I’d say that 😂
It's one of the greatest adverts, for sure..
But i'd still say that the Cadbury's gorilla advert takes the top spot 😄 ruclips.net/video/La7B8mBnTXs/видео.html
these should also be in the discussion 😂

It takes time to learn such things… I thought the same thing about this commercial when I was very young but now….
Here’s to waiting…
I was 18 when this advert came out and instantly was memorised. Incredible stuff.
Best ad ever - Where has all the imagination gone from commercials, nowadays? This advert makes one WANT to sit up & watch it all the way through, not fast forward! The whole point isn't it... Make us all watch what they are selling...
Love, Love, Love it!
because its the liberals who has lost the imagination, I remember loving this advert when I was a teenager working at pizza hut.
Blame box ticking, cuck, leftists
I don't see what it's got to do with politics, lol. The way we consume media is different now. In the 90s we all sat around the TV and watched the same few channels. That meant that you could have big-budget ads that made a statement. People actually talked about them the next day. We don't have those shared experiences anymore, for better or worse.
Yeah adverts have really shot themselves in the foot nowadays by being terrible, I have so much disposable income and nothing to spend it on thanks to streaming services and ad blockers 😂
@@V1er1f1ed Your comment is a great advertisement for shoehorns.
One of the coolest ads ever made
It still is
Without a doubt
Is right!
Ever...💪
*The coolest ad ever made 🤟🏼
Greatest commercial ever and no surprises since it's directed by Jonathan Glazer who went on to make the masterpiece Under the Skin. The advert has such diverse elements of poetry, visuals and music, that one wouldn't imagine working together, yet somehow Jonathan seemlessley interconnected them perfectly.
He also did the 2015-17 Channel 4 idents (Which was Utterly Bizarre)
@@alexmacleod3728 Wow I had no idea. They were veey creative.
@@Ivelostmymind23 I was Bewildered by it when it first came on the screen
He also done sexy beast. One of the greatest films ever made
He did some other classic ads and music videos. Street Spirit (Fade Out) by Radiohead was one of his videos.
Quite simply, the greatest Ad of all time. Don Draper would be proud.
Don Draper would literally trade his wife to get this director to come work for Sterling Cooper. Poor Betty, she was flawless. He ruined her!
The advert ' the impossible dream' for Honda is up there too x and the one with ' The cloud' Guinness x
Advertising in the late 90s and early 00s was high art.
The 90s were a great time
Still a great ad 22 years on and belated thanks for introducing Leftfield to the world
Came out of leftfield didn't they
Other than their genre defining album 4 years earlier.
I think the platinum-selling, Mercury-Prize-nominated, multi-hit-single-generating “Leftism” did that.
@@AndyHarrisGooglethey weren't known by the general public however until this advert
This ad still gives me goosebumps
Almost tears for some reason, damn.
@Paul Bentley Yes, me too. It's like some amazing, noble, stirring fairy tale - to me, anyway!
It’s not just one of the greatest ads, it’s one of the greatest films.
still here in 2024, goosebumps and nearly tears too. Fine art.
When adverts sometimes used to be better than the programs. You know it’s a great advert when your still remember it 30 years on.
Sound track for ad brought me back like 10 years later. A beat that can never be forgotten.
The bassline might have inspired Konflict - Beckoning
Leftfield
I remember being 16 and body boarding an 8ft wave. This advert was in my mind, it felt like a bloody tsunami but what a feeling. Best advert ever!
I was 16 when this ad came out, it stayed with me all these years as the pinnacle of Guinness ads (they're all great). I'm 39 now, never been on a surfboard in my life, but it must be such a rush 🌊
Cannot stop watching it. The top magnificent piece among ads.
I’m a Guinness lover and this wasn’t just any advert, it was Art that defined the 90s and Guinness itself 🖤
I’m not a surfer but I read a lot and I love horses. That’s what makes this advertisement special. Who can deny what magnificent beauty those people animals have watching this, or think of the old legends of seeing horse’s heads in the waves?
Nobody will ever create an advert more powerful than this one.
Agreed 💯💯
A cinematic masterpiece!
It’s Glazer’s best film after “Under the Skin” - it’s possibly even better.
Best ad of all time
Guinness had some brilliant ads. Love the old swimming champion one too.
Pushing a quarter century and this still fixes me rigid in my seat.
This is arguably the most blokey, masculine ad ever made! Here's to Ireland- the land of fine alcohols!
It's fukin homoerotica
Woketards: Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
@@Jaysonbc1234 I'm a "woketard" (at least, by the standards of people like you), and I both love this ad and drink Guinness as my beer of choice.
fine alcoholics* :P
I remember as a kid this ad blew me away and its still does to this day 23 years on
Here after watching Zone of Interest - a recent Jonathan Glazer materpiece . Remember this ad well from back in the 90s - same intensity and incredible cinematography
The aged surfer, waiting his whole life for the perfect wave. Surfing, living, waiting. And finally it comes, the unfathomable power of nature takes on, in his mind, the unbridled freedom of wild horses, loose and unhinged, and indescribably beautiful.
The time will return for this splendid type of advertising creation 🙏
I really hope so. All adverts around nowadays are awful
I'm at home with COVID and I put this ad on again. It's the only thing that's made me actually feel alive.
Incredible stuff that sends a shiver right through me.
They used a unique compositing system (besides Quantel`s Domino) which was developed in house. It used separate computers for each color and therefore had separate hard drives. It happened sometimes, that one of the drives was from a different job and therefor showed a strange mix of images. Unbelievable what they achieved with such rudimentary and limited technology back then...
I remember there not being a single mention of this advert in the guniess factory/museum in Dublin.
That's because this advert is british
Came here because I heard this was voted the best advert in history
Great advert, I remember this one, Guinness did the best ads in the late 90s and early 00s, love how the advert was made and the music and the horses, such memories and I was only 4 years old at the time.
The ultimate collaboration of sound and taste, Leftfield and Guiness. Genius.
You know this is a brilliant memorable ad when Top Gear used the music as a cameo in one of their motorhome challenge.
Yes! Hammond and May trying and failing horribly to re-create this advert! Great episode that was! I still think Clarkson had a good idea with his motorhome and was on to something! 😂
Leftfield at that time were IMHO the coolest band on the planet. A few brilliant Albums. Massive Attack vibes. Good times in the UK.❤
Amazing imagery, i wish i could watch movies that had this level of dream imagery. The beauty of ot is the suspense sound editing and not revealing everything
he directs features, check Under The SKin
This advert terrified me as a kid! Something about the black and white, the close of up of the faces, the music and the massive horses! lol
Same here, especially the really long shot of the guy looking upwards at the start, the music too.
As Guinness ads go this is the ONE. I recall seeing it at 16 mesmerised, as a kid me and my Mam would go to the coast on stormy days to watch the waves. We used to say the wave spray was like white horse manes, perfect analogy brought to life
it is almost scary in its surrealism with the horses looking so large. i saw the making of it and they just had horses jumping over styles nowhere near water. brilliant advert. up there with secret lemonade drinker for me :) also the ads "if you see Sid, tell him" and JR Hartley.
Damn, I am showing my age, lol
I respect the fact you said Secret Lemondade drinker. That ad is amazing and hilarious 😂
Love your age. An achievement.
One of those adverts that sticks in your mind, and you remember what product it was advertising too - very very clever!
25yrs on my head still nods to the beat
Still an epic piece of timing, music and cinematography ❤️
Love this Add.. its coz of this i got the Leftfield Album. Also one of the best albums ever.
Glazer is a genius
The horses make this the greatest advert of all time.
Jeez, that was a freakin beer commercial!? Impressive, very impressive.
Jonathan Glazer made Virtual Insanity MV, this ad and The zone of interest. Straight to LEGEND.
Never fails to give me goosebumps!
My gran always told me the white sparkling froth on top of the waves were "white horses".
She was right.
Damn. Not even parfume ads go this hard anymore.
Now i understand why this is GOAT ads!!!
As a kid this this ad used to scare me soo much, I would run out the room whenever it came on the tv.
Everyone else seems to love this ad in the comments. Am I the only person that never did lol
This was my first time watching this ad, and I was pretty freaked out by the sudden cuts to silence. I can imagine being terrified of it if it was the last thing you saw on TV at the end of the day
I remember being in bed and you could hear this ad come on from the TV downstairs and it was just anxiety music. It's a great ad but 8 year old me wouldn't thank you for it.
It scared me too, just the guy at the start staring upwards, the music and the random freeze-frames terrified me. Now though, I think the advert is amazing.
One of the greatest ads ever. I now understand!
The length of the advert is the same time Guinness quote you have to wait for the perfect 2 part pour.
I think this is the best ever. I've never been able to forget it thank god.
The last great film of the 20th Century was just 100 seconds long.
Much better than all that "we're all in this together" shite we have now.
Us, waiting for Test Drive Unlimited : Solar Crown
Without a doubt the best advert ever
If you listen to this album rhythm and stealth leftfield with zelda ocarina of time it's quite an experience.
That drum beat 👌🏻
A+ video!
First time I ever saw that commercial, LOVE IT.
Directed by JONATHAN GLAZER??? HOLY MOLLY. HE IS SO TALENTED!!!
Superb cinematography, visually stunning.
Mmm yes I would quite agree very superb, very classy, quite an excellent experience, mmm, yes, quite, indeed, mmm🧐🤙☕
"Cheers to waiting" Best bloody beer of all time the Guinness Draught, perfection in a pint.
As long as I look at the Guinness ad I'll never figure out
How yer man stayed up on the surfboard after 14 pints of stout
LMAO
Sure, he was climbing up the walls and he was moving round the chairs.
This was the first ad where they did something like this, cause before this commericals were "This beer is great, drink it"
Love this leftfield tune
This advert always reminded me of Rugby for some reason…I think it was because it was closely followed by the New Zealand Haka advert back in the 90’s, great times to be alive
Directed by Jonathan Glazer who made Sexy Beast a few months later. A terrific movie.
Louis Mellis did the voice over. He co-wrote Sexy Beast.
This is the best advert of all time followed by reeboks "belly's gonna get you"
Been looking for this, was beginning to think I made it up in my head
The best ad I´ve ever seen! Wow!
Still gives me chills. Just wonderful.
I literally had to go and get a Guinness out of the fridge after rewatching this. Exquisite
Used to love seeing this ad on TV when I was a kid fuck I miss the 90s
What Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown mean ?,
Goosebumps every time
100s and the best advert ever on UK TV (and it didn't even advertise it's product)
Still the best advert EVER!
I hope you see the Lord of the Rings influence in this amazing ad.
When Gandalf had the flood wash away the Nazgul chasing Frodo as they tried to cross the river, he formed the water to resemble stampeding horses.
You should look up a painting by Walter Crane called Neptune's Horses (1910).
@@SasquatchAtTheSpaceDisco Just did. Amazing.
this could be a superbowl ad in the modern age
I can watch this forever times
Absolutely brilliant advert.
I remember when it came out. I saw it in the Savoy in Dublin, for those that don't know, it had the capability of showing 2.85:1 aspect radio films, not many theaters in Europe had Raders of the Lost Arc in full aspect.
However, this... masterpiece Guinness 'film' showed on that screen, the music Id bought that afternoon as a 3x10" vinyl set Leftfield Rythm & Stealth, which never really made it to the US, like it should have.
Oh god you're so full of yourself..
The best ad ever. Ever.
Went to the Guinness brewery today, watched this expecting the pause with the guys on the beach to break into a drum version of that bass tune? Could have sworn original ad featured the massive drum crescendo at end?
Best ad ever for sure
Tick.... followed tock just like he said.... here's to waiting.
Absolutely love guiness
Stunning advert.
Voiceover is s hit
I want a pint of Guinness now, but it's 10:30 am.
It's 5 o'clock somewhere! 😉
Contrary to popular belief the best time to drink is in fact in the morning.
The geniuses who created this Ad were Tom Carty and Walter Campbell
Ban alcoholic advertisements
so Garnt was talking about this huh
came from trash taste
Quite simply beautiful.
My favorite ad ever
Perfection.
OH MY GODS. that reminds me of the wild Hund, led by the Odin and other Aesir. Distinctly one of the best ads I have seen
It’s a nod to Irish mythology and the land of Tir na nóg
Wish it was the start of a movie. Can feel a slight trainspotting vibe.
Anyone from Trash Taste here yet?
Still amazing
Absolutely fantastic ❤️
