- The Crown in Birmingham, England was a legendary music venue. Black Sabbath played their first gig there and a young Robert Plant frequented the blues jams. I recently visited The Crown and made this video about it's history.

Because of you i’ve started putting together shows with local artists around the OK/MO border!
That makes me happy to hear that, Isaac! : )
Let the music be our teacher.
Picking a favorite Sabbath song is like picking a favorite Beatles song, nearly impossible! lol. I always loved "The Wizard." Geezer Butler and Bill Ward are my top picks for best rhythm section of all time. They had a special magic together. I know theres still Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker, as well as John Paul Jones and John Bonham, but for me the heaviest and most groovy was Black Sabbath. I hope Birmingham pulls their heads out of their asses and preserve the place as a music venue. Thanks for the story, Otis!
I really appreciate these videos! love your channel and your artistry Brother.
Thank you!
I saw Black Sabbath play at the St Paul MN civic center on July 3rd 1971......Bloodrock was the opener.......great show....lots of fireworks were being seiing off by the audience......good thing we never burned up. ;)
The first six concerts I went to were 3 Sabbath shows in 1980 and 81 and 3 Ozzy shows in the same years. Still a big fan. Hole In The Sky or Supernaut or my favorites lately.
You are really killing it with these uploads from the UK. Thanks for taking the time.
Hello Otis, glad to know about the Crown. I've been trying to learn rock history all my life, 62 yrs old now. Can't get enough,🤪😀🤔📢😵. Ironman was my favorite Black Sabbath song. Thanks brother, ✌️🤘
Brother Gary
I was at the ITMA, (a textile machine show) in Birmingham, was walking to my room and noticed a plaque on the wall next to a room. I saw the name, Marc Bolan; it was his room when he stayed in Birmingham. Chills.
Never been there…but I have to agree.. “War Pigs” is my favorite Sabbath tune.. simply because it’s the first tune that I learned to play bass on.. back when the first album was new.. VERY fond memories..👍🏼❤️.. I moved on to Berry Oakley soon after..
Thanks again Otis. Blues psychedelia is a neat way to describe Black Sabbath. We used to listen to that '69 show (classic bootleg tape) on the way to Dead shows in Jersey. Fairies Wear Boots cuz smokin' and trippin' is all that you do....YEAH!! I still will listen to Fluff when I take a nap.
Far out, Otis. Faeries Wear Boots is my fave Sabbath tune. Rock on.
I could have listened to you talk about this all day Otis.
Cool to see Birmingham. Thanks, Otis, and I hope your tour is going well. Stay healthy.🌸
War Pigs.🎶
Planet Caravan…didn’t even recognize it as Black Sabbath when I first heard it…Otis thank you for finding an sharing these places.
Great story of history Every song till Ronnie left But Master of reality hands down for that kind of music THE BEST EVER recorded .....
Much love to you Otis you're a legend my friend,I was 16 when those songs came out, hard to beat war pigs for the statement but my favorite is Sweet Leaf
After Forever is my favorite Sabbath song.
Never say die! I always thought of that album as their foray in the disco scene, for some odd reason..
I'm so getting a kick out of the history you are sharing! Thank you Otis
What's your favorite Black Sabbath song?
War pig is mine as well. iconic rock song.
A Bit Of Finger/Sleeping Village/Warning
All the songs on Masters of Reality. On this album Tony tunes down the guitar, one and a half tune, for the first time. I have always wounder if Tony I. was inspired by Mike Russo, who tuned down one and a half tune allready in the 60s?
Great video Otis!
Into the void
Anything from the Ozzy era really. Also liked the Born Again album.
But I tend to like or at least remember best the songs that stood out a bit from their usual characteristic sound. E.g. Changes, Fluff, and especially that sad ballad which almost sounded like an early Dylan song. Can't quite remember the name of it right now... Solitude
Such great history! My favorite Sabbath tracks are N.I.B. and Fairies Wear Boots.
It is so cool that you are showing us these rock-and-roll historical places! Stay safe, Otis!
That war pigs in Paris video you talking about was opened with the most hostile version of paranoid I've heard. These kids had no idea what they were seeing!! My favorite Sabbath song is planet caravan!
Think about what Tony Did before going full time with Sabbath. This is one hard core dude. Working back then in a steel mill? This guy hacks his finger tip off and literally makes a new one on his own to become one of the greatest guitar players of his time. What I would give to just get an hour or two just to sit and talk to him. Luckily there are a few good interviews out there to watch…
Another great reason to live in the moment and fully enjoy and appreciate what you have when you have it. You never know when it will be gone. I love how you try to keep the history of music and venues like this alive through stories. Unfortunately more often than not places like this are lost. Keep fighting the good fight Otis.
Thanks for the history lesson on this venue. Every now and then I talk to an old music fan who had seen various famous musicians when they were just getting started playing in bands that are now barely a footnote in history.
I remember getting an album from my uncle in Bolivia. It was black sabbath called attention. Great album evil woman was a great song
Damn Otis you are knocking it out the park on these videos lately!!!!! The first music I ever got was Sabbaths Master of reality !! 1978 ish
I love music history tourism when I’m able, and am so grateful for you taking us along on your travels. Thanks a ton, man. And Paranoid is my favorite Sabbath song - just rips from the opening notes and never lets up.
Otis ... thanks for taking me places I'll probably never see !
Sabbra Cadabbra, love that tune.
Brill video brother.N.I.B & war pis for me.I was dj @ The Crown for 9 years.Loved my time there xxx
I taught myself to play mainly with the tab book for "We Sold Our Soul For Rock'n'Roll."
It shows in my note choices all these years later, too LOL
So, The Crown it's sort of like NYC CBGBs England version ?! Good to know your knowledge about the place, my fav Black Sabbath song has to be Sweet Leaf and Led Zep Battle of evermore. Thank you for sharing.
Love this Otis!...... my favourite Sabbath song is The Wizard
I'm really glad you're able to have some time to make these awesome videos! Stay healthy & enjoy the rest of your tour!
Thank you, Robert!
I’m a Brummie and my ‘weird’ uncle got me in to punk by telling me about seeing GBH play the Crown. Sadly, by the time I came of age UB40 we’re playing there instead!
I don’t know how long you are here for but December 20th Fred Zeppelin are playing at the Robin 2 in Bilston which is about 10 miles west of the city centre. They have in the past been joined on stage by Robert Plant who is a fan
Otis, I've occasionally watched your videos and always thought you were a pretty cool dude with interesting content. After this video, you just graduated to Supercool bro. Thanks and cheers.🤘
Once again, thank you for sharing these historical locations and the history of them with us. It saddens me that the town didnt try to preserve that historical building and it is getting run down. Iron Man and Crazy Train, have to be my favorite Black Sabboth songs. Take care.
I love these videos, great stuff, please keep them going. My Black Sabbath tune is Paranoid.
Kinda like what's left of what was the FILLMORE EAST in NYC...just a sidewalk with endless memories
Hello Ottis I'm from Birmingham used too drink in the crown, but by the time I was old enough to drink they'd stopped gigs, due to family problems missed your gig in Smethick, see you next time around
Thanks so much for preserving history. I have always loved Black Sabbath. It’s just real. War pigs is up near the top. Along with NIB and the Wizard. I slso alway appreciated Neon Knights with Dio
I used to joke to my friends that having Dio front Sabbath made Soundgarden unnecessary. : )
Thank you for the history highlight, Otis!
That had to be an amazing scene back in the day. Sad that developers got ahold of it.
I think the first Black Sabbath song I ever heard was "Iron Man", but I'd have to agree that "War Pigs" is my favorite because of the socio-political commentary and the musicianship.
Travel safe and enjoy! 🙏
Almost forgot, I think the Paris show which you refer to was 1971, I had the bootleg called "Copper", it was YEARS before I ever saw that show on vid....
'Sabbath is probably my favorite band. Thank you so much for sharing this brother.
Here's that Paris 1970 video, it's pretty damn great!

⚓️ Thanks Otis 😎
How cool is that? Thanks for the video, sir!
Thank you!
You are Right Otis: These places are part of Cultural and Historical Heritage and they should be preserved for future generations to not just learn about Music’s past but to also shape Music’s Future ,it’s Very Sad that this is happening in London ,as well as other City’s in Britain, I’m also Sure it’s happening to historical venues in the USA , Business Men call it Progress , But to people like me and you who know the true importance of we’re great music grows from maybe it’s Regress … Time will tell as they say.. Love the channel and what you doing keep em coming Fella 👍🏻⭐️🌞⭐️🌞⭐️🌞❤️👍🏻
Wicked World gotta be my fav.
Very cool!
Thank you for everything you do! So much fresh content, so cool to learn all these unknown stories
So cool Otis, thanks so much! Prayers for continued success and much love to you and Ms. Amy!
Wow Otis, Thank you SOOO much for sharing this story, along w/ your other videos from the UK.
It's a shame they don't preserve it! What a rich history!
Fav Sabbath song is tough...
Into the Void
Solitude
Symptom of the Universe
Hole in the Sky
...along w/ the classics!
Then:
Sign of the Southern Cross
Neon Knights
Mob Rules
...just off the top of my head!
Judas Priest MUST have played there back in the day??!!!
I really dig the war pigs live at cal jam i wonder if thats the same one you saw? Ozzy has this fringy shirt and gold boots and hes having the time of his life!
Great video
Very kewl
Sweet Leaf ✌️😎
Supernaut always hit the spot.
Fave Sabb songs? Hmm, quite a few hard to choose. "Fairies Wear Boots" and "Into The Void" especially the live versions. Even a less frequently played tune like "Spiral Architect" That's a great more melodic Sabb song.
Favorite Black Sabbath song is "Supernaut"
Great video again Otis. yeah, developers and other greedy people who put money before culture have ruined this country's grassroots music scene sadly. I like ''Iron man'' and ''Changes'' . Thanks again. Hope you are enjoying your tour
Man Otis you're cool as shit. Fave song is probably Fairies Wear Boots or Sweet Leaf!
Ps nearly forgot ''Snowblind '' is a killer Sabbath track
So many great Sabbath songs it’s impossible for me to pick a favorite, but Snowblind and Fairies Wear Boots would have to be near the top of a long list.
Birmingham is a very special place. Judas Priest. Sabbath, Def Leppard, Plant/Bonham, and even ELO are from there. Maybe Iron Maiden too? At any rate, I've always wanted to see the place but never have (and probably won't now). They oughta be promoting their musical heritage, as it's the only thing they're known for besides steel.
Sadly this same thing is happening in Austin Texas, a few bars and honky tonks are hanging on but surrounded by high rise buildings now
The wizard the best black Sabbath song listen to it high school out grown it by 20 was going to John Prine and Steve Goodman shows.
My gosh Otis, are you ever coming back home
I also saw ozzy with randy rhoads rudy sarzo, tommy aldridge , blizzard of oz tour, oakland coliseum , day on the green funny tommy played drums for pat travers crash and burn tour and pat was next on the lineup at the festival after ozzy, im wondering if thats when ozzy grabbed him up? Because i didnt see who was drumming i was too far , anywayhe played only 5 songs, and iron man was one of them my fav is fairys wear boots
Fairies Wear Boots.
You know it's War Pigs. Also, if you haven't heard it, you should check out Ruthie Foster's resonator cover of it (ruclips.net/video/ZsZEvbPCvQY/видео.html)
Any Vince Taylor hangouts visited?
Was robert plant fronting the band of joy , his first band
Music has much more to teach than what we hear. Property Developers are among the lowest people who have to much control.
Ha looks like the First Ave from the front.
Well minus the black paint and silver stars
Favorite Sabbath tune is Hard Road you'd think the members of Sabbath with there respect for the place and wallets could save the day.
they cant pull it down its a listed building anyway in its own right was built in victorian period ,just like the garrison made famous by the tv show peaky blinders built around the same time ,the sad one is in erdington above a carpet shop, was a club known as the mothers ,had pink floyd ,caravan ,e,l,o procal harem jimmy hendrix small faces zepillin to name a few who played there, was allways packed in the 60s 70s
Into the void
