Kevin is the beatboxer on the far right. He is NOT laying down a bass line. That distinction belongs to Matt, far left. Scott is covering the bass while Matt sings his solo.
Scott is a lyric baritone. In describing a man's vocal range, "lyric" means that his actual range exceeds his nominal range. In Scott's case his range starts about midway through a normal bass range and extends upward through most of a normal tenor range. Probably about 5 or 6 octaves. Kevin isn't laying down a bass bottom; Kevin is beatboxing and may be supplying some of those high bell tones. Kevin is a tenor. The lowest I've ever heard him sing was just barely in a high baritone. What you're actually hearing is Matt singing the bass harmonies, which is one of the reasons Kevin's beatboxing has such a full sound. It can be easy to miss because Matt is a good deal more subtle about it than Avi was. As for Matt's range, he's a lyric bass, and his range seems to be growing on an almost daily basis. He isn't QUITE down to basso profundo yet, but I expect he'll be there within another year or two. If you want to know his current range, his arrangement for the second verse of "Hallelujah" seems to have been specifically written to show off his full range. This is a live feed of "Hallelujah" from their recent world tour: ruclips.net/video/ASYzLoi810k/видео.html I recommend listening to it. Matt will blow you away.
I swear, every time I watch you two react, I feel like I'm watching it right there with you for the first time. You're the BEST. Also - EXCITING NEWS - I snagged VIP tickets for a PTX concert NEXT WEEK! Can't wait!! Jen ❤❤
You will love them in concert live. I saw them last Sept at the Hollywood Bowl this concert. And already have my tickets for this Sept in Washington. Near Seattle at the fair . I cant wait. TY for your great reactions, and Enjoy seeing them live . . .
Scott has an immense vocal range, he jumps in when Matt, and before Avi, did sing. He reaches from bass to baritone. Nice to see you TWO again. Elmar from Germany
This song is such an eargasm!! One of my favorite upgrades!!. When you get closer to Christmas listen to You're A Mean One Mr. Grinch if you really want to hear Matt shine.
Great reaction! Did you know that Kirstie gave birth to her daughter 6 months prior to the Hollywood Bowl concert, she's one tough cookie for going on tour within a month after giving birth, daughter's name is Elliana.
The tall blond guy is Scott Hoying-Baritone (most singers have a vocal range of 2 octaves, some have 3, Mariah Carrey has 5); the girl is Kirsten Maldonado, Mezzo-Soprano (the lower range of sopranos near Alto range); the guy with the hat is Mitch Grassi, Counter-Tenor (the upper ranges of the Tenors real close to the lower ranges of the Alto's/Sopranos); Avi Kaplan, Basso-Profundo, left the group, andwas replaced by the guy in the white jacket, Matt Sallee, also, Basso-Profundo; the Beatboxer is Kevin Olusola who is a Tenor, Cellist, and Cellist Beatboxer. Scott, Kirsten, and Mitch met in a high school in Arlington, TX (between Dallas and Ft.Worth, TX). After graduation they went to different colleges and majored in music. They got together for a singing competition called "Sing-Off," but 5 people were required, so Avi and Kevin came on board from referrals. The rest is history. Avi left, and Matt was introduced to the group. They are an A capella group which means no instruments. Penta is Latin for 5, and Tonix for tones - sooo, 5Tones or Penta Tonix, affectionately known as PTX. They are the Best. Thank you for your reaction.
Scott is a baritone but can do some amazing low notes as well as high notes (don't know the technical terms). He takes over the bass when the bass singer, Avi or Matt, are singing. Great reaction! :)
Scott has a 6 octave range, incredible range. You are in for a serious treat at the Live show. It will be joyous. I went to their live show last year and shed tears of pure joy at the performance.
Watch one of the live shows of Mr Grinch. Kirstie’s boyfriend plays the grinch and there was a fab skit where Matt not only shines in the entire song but he also displays incredible showmanship too.
Both Scott and Matt are technically Baritones. I believe Matt can go a couple of notes lower than Scott. Y'all have been hearing Scott do the bass line whenever Matt, or previously Avi, were singing something other than bass in a given song.
I'm so loving your reaction! And I'm so excited for you getting to go see them live! I can hardly wait to see your video after the concert! Thanks for sharing!!
Scott is and always has been the backup Bass, he can go LOW. When Avi or Matt sing, Scott does the Bass. Scott has a huge range and many hidden talents. Kevin does the Beatboxing, Matt does the Bass and Scott does backup Bass if Matt is singing. But even way back, like in the original Hallelujah, when Avi was singing, Scott was doing the Bass. Kevin isn't laying down any bass. Matt does the Bass and Scott does backup. Matt's classically trained and can go as high as a high Baritone carefully. Also if you ever notice Scott and Mitch they use hand movements to mimic the notes they're singing up or down, or when they're crescendo-ing or de-crescendo-ing. A lot of singers who don't have instruments to lay down a beat, use their hands in this way.
Can I request for you to react to 4th Impact - 4 sisters from The Philippines with amazing harmonies that will leave you speechless. In 2015 they auditioned for X Factor UK and that video has more than 189 million views. In Feb 2023 they performed before 55, 000 people in manila. They can sing any genre of song and have many covers and a few original songs on you tube.
Great reaction! I have been following PTX since "The Sing Off". The other group to look at is Home Free...they have many covers and the members Austin Brown (high Tenor) and Tim Foust (bass with 5+ octave range) have many solo projects. Most are introduced to Home Free via "Man of Constant Sorrow" or PTX fans by "Ring of Fire ft Avi Kaplan" but they also have collabs with Lee Greenwood for "God Bless the USA" and Don McLean for "American Pie" as well as many others. Give them a look since you have seen Pentatonix and VoicePlay. The harmonies are amazing and Adam Rupp the vocal percussionist is a beast. This song from PTX is amazing...I have been following all three groups since "The Sing Off" and they are all amazing in their own rights.
Hey guys, love this video! Pentatonix are amazingg!! Also I know you guys love Morissette Amon so I have a recommendation. You guys should react to Morissette’s song with Jason Dy called “Diyan Ba Sa Langit” which they also performed on the wish bus 3 years ago and have a music video to it.
The bass is a singer too. You tried to differentiate bass and singer they are the same like baritones and tenors (altos and sopranos for females) are types of singer ranges (like the bass).
@TouchyReactions I miss you, I know you went for a vacation, am I right? I hope you had a great time. Not to pressure you, but you've got a lot of reactions to do😁🤩 you'll gonna enjoy it..we'll be waiting..see ya😀 By the way, my first time to listen to this pentatonix, their vocals are great too.
Loved the reaction! Please check out Voctave's cover of Mary did you know ft. Mark Lowry. Markvis the writer of this song. I think this is the best version of this song.
Kevin is the beatboxer on the far right. He is NOT laying down a bass line. That distinction belongs to Matt, far left. Scott is covering the bass while Matt sings his solo.
Scott has always sung the bass when Avi and now Matt take the lead. He has a RIDIC range.
For another Matt lead, check out their version of Mr. Grinch.
Lol, thanks for reminding us that this version of the song existed. Even though it's June now, had to go check it out again after reading this!
Yesssss please!
In Halleluyah Scott did bass while Avi sung solo. Scott has a tessitura that is unbelievable.
Matt has an absolutely gorgeous voice!!! Exceptional!

They all sounded great but if I had to pick one I would say Kirstie. She has had some Classical training and been on Broadway and it shows .
