I remember when a team from Boston came to Nova Scotia to pull againt Falmouth Heavy. The Americans didn't believe in using the backlock. Falmouth took the set, slipped some rope and held on hands. The Boston team surged but no go. Falmouth went into the backlock and started a march - never stopped till they walked them out.

Very interesting technique. I pulled as part of 5 societies/fraternities at a small college. We pulled across a pond 10 v 10 with no time limit. Some pulls lasted 90min--bloody hands and armpits. Our technique had us butt on the ground and then we pulled with a cadence with a massive impulse on the rope. If timed well you launch the other team out of their holes and gain ground. It was like doing a quick squat about 30 degrees from the ground. You would land flat on your back and reset your feet. The team was a little vulnerable during the reset but if you got a good pull the other team was moving forward so could not easily pull against you while you were resetting. Fun times!

90 minutes is pretty long! Thanks for sharing

"no time limit. Some lasted 90min--bloody hands and armpits" sounds like the way I play batminton with a tennis racket at my high school. Best times always live so short.

@@jamesleicher sounds good 👍 I suspect the technique would be different. Most tug of war I’ve seen is different than the way we pull tug of war. Ours is unique to our region. It’s not the traditional way, but it’s a lot of fun!

It’s the way tug of war has been pulled in Atlantic Canada for close to a century, if not longer. Their is a loop at the end of the rope for the anchor.

So first off, there should’ve been a bell that sounded once the timer hit zero. Second, it’s funny how the coaches think they’re actually influencing anything just because they stand right beside the players and blurt things out, lol. Thirdly, there shouldn’t be an anchor with a strap attached, thats unnatural, it should just be a plain rope.
