I did this myself like 3 years ago on my favorite shirt so I could have it be perfect and now I just bought an $8 shirt at ross that is very good but long sleeves. Your video helped me so much to remind myself of what to do. the part at the end to hide the string from the button is genius.
I am learning to appreciate the skill of tailor. I also learned here that I should not attempt this myself and should take my shirts to a professional tailor.

It worked perfectly for the first sleeve, but since the second sleeve is a mirror image, it was hard to know where to start the large placket because the fabric was on the right side by the cuff. 🤔 I'm about to try it and I feel pretty confident I can figure it out. I would request in the future if there are two sides that differ slightly, a note at the end would be helpful to address what to expect! 😁
Thank you, this was super helpful! One question - instead of making double pleats, have you considered increasing the sleeve taper? That would be more work but I'm guessing it would also make the sleeve look less baggy, don't you think?
You certainly could taper the sleeve instead, the reason we keep the pleats is mainly just because they are already there in the design and they allow for appropriate movement of the elbow. The extra fabric allows for range of motion without wearing down the fabric in that area.
Shae, I just found your channel in the last couple of days. Are you wearing a Federation pin on your apron? Second, do you replicate the pleats on the second sleeve by measuring the first? (brand new so pls forgive the ignorance)
How to measure for someone with large derrière to be able to hem dress for prom or wedding. Not making a dress altering the hem! Seems back is shorter than from to point where there is no altering needed. So I’ll be tapering but I’m scared!!!
That is a terrible way to shorten sleeves of this kind. It really messes it up because you have to make the sleeve more pleated to fit in the cuff, which causes it to not fit properly. Shorten from the top of the sleeve! I have been shortening sleeves professionally for years with fabulous results. All the shirts that came back to our store after shortening your way, resulted in us giving the customers back their money because of the uncomfortable and very funny looking fit
Interesting approach, I find that shortening from the shoulder removes the curve of the shoulder cap and tightens uncomfortably around the bicep so my customers don’t tend to like that, but it sounds like there’s more than one way to do things!
@thesewshowwithshae Remove sleeves and open up some of the sleeve seam and open at least part of side seam of torso. Let's say, you have to shorten a sleeve 2 ". Remove both sleeves, lay one flat along the sleeve seam line, lay the other sleeve on top 2" lower than the top of the sleeve. Cut bottom one to match, then lay the top one flat, line up your shorten one with the one on the table, cut to match. Find center top of both sleeves, mark. Find center top of sleeve hole, not necessarily the shoulder seam, mark. Attach the marked side seam to the marked shoulder. Pin together down both sides of sleeve head. You may not reach all the way to the end of the torso side seam. Sew sleeve head back on, then match side seams. Start on sleeve seam, sew sleeve seam down through torso side seam, removing excess torso fabric from armhole. Works great!
Tallgrass is very good at what she does, but find it annoying that she veers from her professionalism too often and seems more interested in how she is coming across to the videographer. It takes away from the concentration that many viewers like to have when watching this type of instructive video.
If we were in an in-person class, she would also be looking occasionally at the audience and making eye contact and comments. To me, she makes this feel as close to an in-person tutorial as possible.

I measure from the triangle cut point up . the amount the shirt os shortened.then cut it ,up to the mark, and cut my triangle.

Absolutely, anything less than 1 inch I would leave the placket athe same!

What kind of marker do you use?
I mark my sleeve the amount to shorten before I take the cuff off.
Use a razor blade. The placket is the diffucult procees of this alteration.

Totally disagree, I think it helps break up the potential monotony of a tedious task. I'm team anti-professionalism!

It makes her real. I enjoy her personality mixed in with her very detailed teaching style.
