  • The Lotus F1 Type 91 was is next up in our series on the groundbreaking ground effect technology used in Formula 1. Clive Chapman (the designer's son) discusses in no uncertain terms: “There's a lot of century profile, creating a lot of downforce, at 160 Mph, in theory, at that speed, you can drive along the ceiling and you’d stick to it like Spiderman".

    There will never be another Chapman. His mind was thinking outside the box constantly.

    That car looks absolutely gorgeous! That and the Ferrari 126C2 were just so pleasing on the eye.
    For me, 1982 was the peak in F1 ascetics: beautiful and extremely dangerous.
    And it was a fabulous championship, undecided until the very last race. It was Keke Rosberg who won it all with just one Grand Prix win all season. A great, yet sad, year: Gilles Villenueve and Riccardo Paletti dying at the wheel.

    late 70s through to the end of the 90s just awesome F1 cars and the JPS Lotus cars were just beautiful looking cars.

      The most famous lotus is the 79 but for me 91 is the best one(at least the most beautiful) Even if it didnt win the championship

    I love the 1981 and '82 F1 cars. They look like Indycars of that era. Makes me wonder what the Indy 500 would be like if Lotus or Williams took to the speedway.

    I have done the analysis on that specific car. It's got my suspension set up an yeah, I would say it's my favourite ground effect car!

    Can someone explain to me what happened that Lotus fell out from racing and why they are not pursuing a come back into F1 today?

      that malay company brought nothing but shame to the legend manufactures such Classic Team Lotus...

      Eriq Affandi Danny Bahar brought more shame imo. He gave away Exiges to rappers to show in their videos and paid them to include the word Lotus in their lyrics to create a "stir" and allure among the wealthy young generation to try and create the same sort of attraction like that of Ferrari and Lamborghini!! lol Among many other shenanigans such as Bahar needing an on call private helicopter and jet. He would have permanently run Lotus to the grave, one which they never would have had got themselves out of. The 5 car lineup imo looked generic and they looked way too similar. The Esprit looked cool, but that's it. Atleast Malaysian co Proton kept them afloat and enabled instead of restricted the go ahead for fully developing the Exige 360, and Evora R&R. But yeah, that sucks when it comes to Lotus F1. Do you think Lotus will ever return to F1?

      JohnReviewer112 i honestly think this has more to do with it
      the fia back then (and now, as far as i know) was both extremely corrupt and biased towards french manufacturers
      the idea of winning any race hosted by them without being a large french manufacturer required just as much innovation and development that lotus had to give and then some, especially if you focused on another area than those french manufacturers since banning stuff like skirts and refueling didnt hurt them nearly as much as it hurt those who focused on those areas rather than just the engine

      It was because all of their f1 cars were banned for being Too good, not terrible.

      Eriq Affandi Modern era Lotus is a quite competitive car compared to this Lotus 91 with the like of Kimi as a pilot. They were on podium ,won several races and also set a several fastest laps with E20 and E21. Their major failure was when they first entered the modern turbo era which is far more competitive and far more expensive than ever before. They just can't afford the price.

    its a shame they got rid of ground effects. what has replaced it is an aero so complex, teams require $100m+ to just take part these days.

      Actually, today's cars get about 60% of their downforce from ground effect, but you're right that the regulations have created an environment where producing the ground effect requires very complex aero features.... but the reality is teams would probably still be spending this much even if the rules hadn't changed -- it's the economics of the sport that have changed, as much as the rules.

    I'd love to see an F1 car running over a ceiling. But that's never gonna happen, because those candidate ceilings are round, and that makes the ground effect even more unpredictable.

    Makes me wonder why they made it 'as light as possible, then load it with ballast' to meet the regulations... when so many Chapman cars had compromised strength and durability.
    Surely you make it a bit stronger, then you need less ballast.
    "What do you know?" I hear you say. Nothing, clearly.

      Ebbro make a 1/20th scale 91. Ebbro kits are quite complex.

    The cars of that era were basically go karts suspension-wise. This car really shows how ugly the modern (2020) cars have become.
