    --------------------------------------------
Cat Quest II is a 2D open-world action-RPG with real time combat set in the fantasy realm, following a cat and dog team summoned to prevent a war between their peoples. It can be played solo or in local co-op, and can be completed in about 7 hours.
The game plays out on an overworld and small dungeons, with gameplay being essentially the same. Both the way forward and quest difficulty is clearly sign-posted, and you can level up quickly, so no heavy grinding is essential to progress through the main storyline. Dungeons are short, and with a bit of skill you can play quests above your current level. Save points that restore your stats are also generously distributed.
There are only a handful of short- and long-range weapons with trade offs, but finding duplicates of weapons or armour increases it's level. Alternatively, items can be upgraded at forges for in game currency, meaning side-quests are not essential. Spells too offer diversity to how you approach the fights, without being overpowered. The combat system however is very basic, with all fights being repetitive dodge roll and attacking, and enemies broadcast their intent. Fights can also get hectic, and you'll find yourself wondering when you lost health. When playing solo, your companion is AI controlled, and you can switch seamlessly between the two, giving the opportunity to run different builds simultaneously, but the AI controlled companion is invincible, which can make things easy to cheese.
Overall, Cat Quest 2 offers a decent and charming casual experience. Combat is repetitive, but skill is required, and the item and level systems work well to ensure the game progresses smoothly. The story and writing could definitely be better however, as the constant animal puns are neither charming nor funny, and just make the text harder to read.
