    That Whale driver had mad skills and balls of titanium! Presence of mind get of the deck when his gear failed, and courage to attempt re-landing instead of just punching out with the crew. Well done Squid!!

    WOW. I sailed on that ship, Coral Sea. I flew on those aircraft, specifically the EA-3B Whale. I've helped rig that barrier--it takes like 40 guys to straighten it out. This film was really nostalgic for me. VQ-1, 75-79.

    No ejection in the A-3, if you go into the water or belly land on the runway or on land there is hatch on the top of the canopy, that’s your way out, if you are at altitude there is a lever on the pilots seat that has to be pullled, 2 cartridges blow down an exit slide, the crew exits the aircraft that way, just make sure that the rake in the bomber version isn’t down, that and the slipstream will do a number on the human body!

    On the first landing with the nose wheel failure.....why didn't the tail hook and cable stop the plane safely? And why didn't the cable and tail hook prevent him from aborting the landing and flying off. Or did the tail hook also fail? It sure was quick thinking and amazing quick action on the part of that pilot.

    • @fredericksaxton3991
      @fredericksaxton3991 2 месяца назад +3

      I did wonder that myself. I think he landed nose heavy and the tail hook was too high to grab the wire and too much force on the wheel caused the wheel to snap. Very good example of the wonders of the angled flight deck though.
