I went to a grammar school and when I was in year 7, most kids didn't even know what cricket was. I live in Australia now and everyone knows about cricket, even if they just follow it casually. It's a big part of the summer culture here
The nail in the coffin was going behind a paywall. Remember the ecb said don’t worry, fewer people will see the game but we’ll ‘invest’ back in grassroots cricket. Thirty years later, we’re still waiting for the ‘investment’. TV was the main way people found the game. If you’re not in a cricketing family or community now, there’s no way to find the game.
@ test cricket in the uk used to be on free to air tv so everyone could watch it but after the 2005 ashes sky got the rights and you had to pay to watch it
All the cricketing countries have sold out to the highest bidder. Without taking out a subscription it cannot be watched. The cost of going to a test match or a one day game is prohibitive. This causes a lack of interest from those who hold cricket dear. As for the women`s game well it will go the same way as the men.
It was a huge mistake to put what was being described as the ‘new football’ in 2005 immediately & completely behind a paywall. Cricket is no longer part of the national conversation. ‘What’s the test score?’ was a commonplace in the summer when I was younger. I’m not a football fan but I’m aware of events in football. People who aren’t cricket fans now have no awareness of the game. When it comes up on quiz shows these days, it’s rare for anyone to have a clue. That really wasn’t the case when it was on free to air T.V. & quite often on the front page of newspapers. Yes, things change but the comparative eclipse has been to a large extent the fault of that fateful decision 20 years ago.
It is because the UK is unhealthily obsessed with football. Wouldn't mind if we were any good at it. No cricket in schools, press, terrestrial tv ir even on the news and the general ignorance from the UK.public, are what stop more people from engaging with it.
Should be an opportunity to play short format cricket on a Saturday or Sunday through clubs. I love playing but can’t commit 8 hours for 45 overs per innings; and players aren’t good enough at amateur level to warrant that length of match either.
It's one of the oldest British sports that isn't cherished in this country, Why the Ashes not treat the same as a footy world cup or the Olympics by being available on free to air tv is insane to me.
It may be that cricket will shrink back to its village roots. The real question is: will test cricket survive? Reading the comments it seems that English state schools are not playing much cricket: if that's the case then test cricket ( and County) will likely peter out for lack of cricketers. White ball cricket will almost certainly have a future because of the popularity in India. Elsewhere I see a probability that baseball will become more popular. (I'm talking long run here.) For 3 hours of sports entertainment it's better than T20 or 100. Without T20 one-day will wither.
I think like Australia all countries can make cricket a subject and especially in countries like India ,England, south africa they are very popular in cricket
Cricket in England will survive in public schools. It’s getting similar to South Africa where you have multiple players in the national team who went to the same school. As a mainstream sport that’s a part of the national culture, it’s a dead sport.
Want to get solution??? Start T20 League Cricket for 6 month in a calendar and Rest 6 months Test. Scrap ODI Believe me if instead of ODI we would have invented T20 1st then by now Cricket would have been a Global Sports but According to some some English uncles "It's not Real Cricket 🤡" Being said that Cricket was always like this interms of popularity Football >>>>>>>>>> Cricket & Rugby. It would have been a dead sports by now if we didn't had Australia and Cary Pakers, and Currently Lalit Modi and IPL
Its not cricket which is loosing popularity every sport like NBA basketball, baseball and even football to some extent loosing popularity and the reason is internet because it provides everything on your hand.
Unless cricket is played at state schools, the potential for a niche sport to die is very high

Totally, I work with people who haven't heard of Ben Stokes, Jimmy Anderson or Joe Root 3 of the best England have produced in recent years.

I hope it lasts long enough till I pass away at least ! Not sure i am prepared to see cricket die before me
Cricket game will increase, due to league cricket
It’s a dead sport
Take a sport off terrestrial TV and stop playing it in state schools and that’s what happens.
The death of west Indies cricket has done a lot of damage. They used to attract people to the game even in the UK particularly black kids
