6 years later and your video is still helping people. Thank you for preparing this first time home owner to replace the mailbox that some jackoff ran into a few hours ago.
Thanks. Although I have done this job several times ... it was great to have your video because I was able to make a list of the items I needed to buy or pull out of my workshop. I will now place all of these items into a wheelbarrow and get started on replacing an older mailbox that was hit by a farmer's tractor.
Thank you so much for this video. I got a new mailbox for a wood post just like in the video and had absolutely no clue how to mount it. Worked like a charm. Much appreciated.
You are so welcome Pamela Lyons. Glad to hear that the talents and skills that I have picked up through my 40 years of public service is beneficial to others! Please make sure you subscribe, new video series coming soon.
Thank you for the very clear and simple way to install a mailbox. I spent half the day trying to install one and it was a total disaster. I see what I did wrong and I got it now. Thanks to you.
This was very helpful to me as I had to replace my mailbox. Great details. My main issue was finding a piece of wood to fit underneath the mailbox. In the end I had to cut a piece of pine. and cut the width down. I bought apiece treated that was supposed to fit a standard mailbox but did not. Too narrow. I can't believe they do not sell the right size. Also in the end I was able to just use a narrow spade and did not need the post hole digger. I did have to sharpen the new spade. Do you have a show on that? I used a grinder attached to a drill. The quickcrete worked great. I let it sit 30 min and was able to attach mailbox. That stuff sets fast. Oh, the worst part was buying stuff at Home Depot and Lowes. The people were so unhelpful. Your video was great help.

so I just need to replace the plaque for the new mailboxes requested by USPS I went to their website to look at the new mailboxes don't know if I should use a regular mailbox or just order this new one
I believe the USPS has regulations on height regardless of the choice you make. The ones that are sold at store are within regulation as far as type or style. Thank you dmoney1dm8512 for responding to this video. Look forward to reading your response on the others as well. Please subscribe now!
It depends where the box is located. Is it urban, rural, on off road, or on the highway? Please check the USPS mailbox standards. I went to the USPS and spoke directly with the post master and she gave me a parameters. Each PO will give you their standards.
Yeah....try that in NE Ohio. First of all we need 30" to get below frost line. You will need jack hammer like hands to get through the hard soil. Then you have to decide what to do when, about 20" down, you hit a big rock. So you move over a couple of feet, and start again. And then again, and again.....until finally, your Saturday is shot, you made up a few NEW swear words, your wife is ticked that you aren't done yet, and you realize it would have been WAY better to have gone fishing instead.

I can't believe you people put you post in the ground with cement. How about the next time you have to replace it. You are going to have a chunk of concrete to deal with. Put the thing in the ground deep enough and it will stay just fine. Not holding up a house. Geeeeezzzzzzz

Good video....just FYI: 5/4 X 6 decking makes a perfect fit for the base.
BMWLDRider Thanks for sharing another great tip in setting a new mailbox on a post!
How do you make that post and frame?
Already pre fabbed at big box store. look it up online.

Just saw the smiley face on your flag. Forget the HOA, I'm totally doing that!
How did that work out you HOA rebel...
how high up does the mailbox need to be from the ground? or does that matter
It depends where the box is located. Is it urban, rural, on off road, or on the highway?
Please check the USPS mailbox standards. I went to the USPS and spoke directly with the post master and she gave me a parameters. Each PO will give you their standards.
Melton's Lawn & Landscape as
They make mounting plates now. No need for the mounting wood slab now.
AWESOME, DON'T YOU WISH WE WOULD HAVE BROUGHT THAT TO MARKET FIRST! 😀
It’s sad some people don’t know how to use post hole diggers.
LOL - right?!
How far from the curb
Within 10' (city/county right of way). Thanks, be sure to like, sub and share the DIY luv.

Is concrete always necessary?? could you just get away with using gravel?
Not for long! LOL Concrete is best for long term stability.
So glad we have letterbox holes cut in the door these things are ugly as hell
