Thanks so much, just picked up a (barely) used set of these pedals with shoes included, to try out clipless first time without spending a lot. After staring at them a while I had a general idea but I really feel a lot more confident after viewing this video. Was especially happy to learn they're quite serviceable, as mine look in good physical condition but they've been in storage so I'm relieved to know I can re-grease things if they've dried out or something. They don't seem to spin all that freely but I've nothing to compare them with, they might be just fine. I'll find out. Thanks again.
This was a great review. Is the cage noticeable when pedaling? I've been riding SPD pedals without a cage for several years. I ordered a set of the M8120's just today. The concerns are (#1)- I wear Shimano MTB shoes with a thick sole, and (#2)- Will the cage really make a difference by providing more contact area when clipped in? Thank you.
Hey! With a stiff soled shoe, you won't notice the extra cage... Although it's great to have if you accidentally unclip and need the additional support.I'm excited to hear what you think of the updated model :)
That's a good point, about matching adjustments on both sides of each pedal, something that I might have neglected to do. But my search of adjusting XT pedals brought me to your video, and a question. After some time, does wear of the pedals (or cleats) cause the foot to come out of the pedal accidentally, say during a sprint? If so, would one click to the "+" side make a difference, or does it require two clicks? Thanks.
Good question. As the cleat wears out, you’re simply rounding off the edges of engagement. So the release tension (made by adjusting the screw that tensions a spring) will not change over time. However, accidental unclipping may occur gradually. Tightening the spring tension may seem to help this, but you’re really just making it harder to unclip a mechanism that has worn out engagement. Does that make sense?
@@MitchOnTwoWheels Mitch it does. I appreciate the thought-process on this, and taking the time to elaborate. Will try the tightening of the spring tension for the CicLAvia ride this Sunday (where the city blocks off the streets and riders of all types of human powered transpo can be free to ride). Will let you know if I fall over at a stop light 😁
Great review! I'd like to ask if I may, what do you think are the differences between the M8020 and the newer M8120 pedals? Hoping to see your answer! Thanks...
It’s your equipment… Shimano pedals don’t change a whole lot because it’s a winning formula. I have huge miles in on a number of Shimano pedals and can hardly tell the difference between them-only what’s written on paper.
Thanks for the review. One thing, it looks like your foot doesn't even come into contact with the platform part. I can't see any wear on the platform. That makes me think, what's the point in having it?
Does the extra cage platform make a difference in pedaling clipped in versus an spd pedal without it? Is it noticeable? Didn't hear you talk about that.

I’m glad the video helped! I hope you have fun trying them out and get used to them as fast as possible. Enjoy 😊

Excellent. Have fun but don’t fall over 😂

Thanks. The 8120’s have a marginally bigger platform… I would get whichever is on sale. Both will be fine.
@@MitchOnTwoWheels Thanks for the immediate reply! I got an offer from a friend of the M8020's for $68, do you think its a good price?

Your shoe will contact it as it flexes around the pedal. Additional platform helps find the clip, and helps you ride unclipped as well.
@@MitchOnTwoWheels Thanks
Can you tell us a tips on tightening the clipless pedal in order to avoid rounding the bolt and losing the thread of the bolt
Are you referring to the pedal axle into the crank arm, or tightening the Tension screw?
The tension screw because when i increased the tension on the screw, it losed the thread of the bolt and now i can't tighten it anymore
Does the extra cage platform make a difference in pedaling clipped in versus an spd pedal without it? Is it noticeable? Didn't hear you talk about that.
It does with the right pair of shoes… a stiff pair of XC race shoes that don’t flex enough to utilize the platform won’t make a difference.
Solid long term review, with a good amount of dog hair!
It’s probably my own luscious locks.
whats the purpose of the extra platform
Support and easier to find the cleat. Also a little more grip to your foot
Is it possible to remove the plates from these pedals?
I believe you can.
@@MitchOnTwoWheels any links/info you can direct me to?
By plates, you mean the outer platform? No, you can't. But Shimano makes the same pedal without the platform, current model the M8100.
Is that pedal compatible with mtb?
Yep.
