For me I noticed that the cheap nob was broken and had a bad contact, probably vibrated until it broke, jamming a paper clip between the nob and the housing to force the potentiometer make contact fixed it for me... I didn't even need to take it apart.

My variable speed nob stopped working after only about 4 uses of the tool in 2 years.
