Sahara is a great film as it shows just a small unit and it's struggle to survive.

Of course the Bogie version is GREAT.
However the Jum Belushi version was a VERY hood additional look at this classic tale.
I have BOTH in my dvd collection...

Bogart wonderfully underplayed his part. When asked how he captured all those enemy troops he just mutters, “Oh, they just walked in.”

The book 'Brazen Chariots' by Major Robert Crisp was written from battle experiences before El Alamein. The level of confusion among the participants make 'Sahara' quite believable.

As I understand it: Because of the vague ending of the movie Wake Island, many people in the United States assumed that the Marines on Wake Island had been killed to the last man. Like in the Alamo. Wake Island was called the Alamo of the Pacific.

The original is a classic, yes a bit over the top in Propaganda but many movies made during the war are. Hade no idea a new version was made.

So, as a kid, I grew up with this movie. So, for most, this is where their connection to this story ends. For me, I have an additional connection to this movie/story. I grew up in Northern Virginia, and nearby was a private tank museum. They have both a M3 Lee and Grant tanks. Now, the original unit used Grant tanks, vs. the Lee tank as seen in the movie. The only difference really in the tanks is the turret, the Grant, the radio is placed in the back of the turret, Lee tank the Radio is in the hall, with an additonal MG turret for the commander. In the film, the inside shots are done in a Lee, not a set.
I got a chance over the years to crew the museums M3Leee tank with my dad. We had a chance to climb all over the museums Lee tank and ride in it. We would take a piece of Chalk and write Lulubelle on the sides. I've told this story many times you have said here, and you said it very well. On a side note, the commanders turret with the 1919, looks cool but its a pain, just to get in and out. Its crazy to think 7 guys were cramed in that thing.
One final PS. I came home from a deployment in 2023. My oldest wanted to go to the tank farm. She dressed as a soviet tanker, given the soviets used them as well. It was the first tank she climed in. The M3 Lee will always be a special tank in my heart.

The main difference between the M3 Grant (UK) and M3 Lee (US) was the British had a better commander's cupola above the 37mm gun.

Haven’t seen the Belushi version although I’d like to. Have seen the original one though and thoroughly enjoyed it partly because I’m a huge Bogart fan!
Interesting point you made about wartime movies covering actual events. On RUclips is the movie Wing And A Prayer about the Battle of Midway. Carriers and squadrons are not mentioned by name and the producers admit that they have fictionalised events for security reasons. In their own right because of these reasons these movies are little pieces of history.

If you're like me, you'll be thinking "Yeah, but Bogey..." while watching the Belushi remake. Perhaps even more than Bogey, the difference in the supporting cast is like black and white. Angelo D'Angelo is no J. Carrol Naish. The same for Robert Wisdom compared to Rex Ingram.

And yet, any Call of Duty commando can tell you American tanks were inferior to German tanks.
Both films are very good, and thought '95 was exceptional for a late after original remake.
There was also "Last of the Comanches" 1953, a western version of the story, with Broderick Crawford in the lead role, that had Lloyd Bridges in it also.

I have not seen the Jim Belushi remake, but I will if I get the opportunity. I generally do not care for remakes i.e. "All Quiet on the Western Front" "Red Badge of Courage" "True Grit" were all best the first time.
