This puzzle uses most of the strategies I’ve demonstrated in previous lessons, and as I solve it I’ll be thinking aloud and hopefully you’ll be thinking aloud along with me! Alright, lets get started!

Thanks for the comment Andrea. I wasn't sure if it would be something people want to see, its longer than my typical videos and unscripted. I'll plan some more medium solves before moving on to showing "solve along with me" harder puzzles. I appreciate your feedback!
@@LearnSomethingNewEveryDay For me, it ties together everything you teach us in the individual episodes. Both are important in different ways, but this fills in the logic. One annoyance I have with NY Times Sudoku (which I access through Chrome browser on my Android phone) is that if I start a puzzle and then pause it (often helps to leave it for a while or just time constraints), many times when I go back to it, my partially solved puzzle is gone and a new blank one appears. So disappointing to not get that final thrill of completion. I read they change the Sudoku puzzles at 10 PM, but this is happening during the day, and it's random. Sometimes it happens, other time my puzzle comes back. Do you have any thoughts on why that is happening?
@@Tee-Catin that is strange, I haven't come across that, but I don't usually leave a puzzle, I do it in one sitting. I have a suggestion, download Duncan's Sudoku Solver and then enter the puzzle in there, that way you will have it. Or print off some blank grids and copy the numbers down into them, then you can solve offline at your leisure, but you may not see if you make a mistake, so I think the Duncan's Sudoku Solver is a better solution for you.
Love how you think outline aloud. It makes it easier to understand. Glad I found this page and please lets solve more actual puzzles together!

This was so great! You gave me some more terminology to use and some helpful strategies I didn’t know about. Just getting started and I feel like this is going to give me a huge leg up!
Following along works great for me. Episode 6 gave me a greater respect for matching airs.
One method that is so logical, easy to understand and I am totally convinced with the way it progresses.
The Snyder notation was helpful. I recently moved up to the medium puzzles, but was keeping it all in my head and not using any kind of notation. This has shaved down my time and made it easier. :)
I really appreciate your stream of consciousness thinking and especially not covering up the mistakes. I really do learn with your style of exposing strategies and the various situations they show up. It really helps the pattern recognition. ❤❤

Of sudoku so I had to reteach myself
A new method and I’m doing yours which has backpedaled me a bit because it’s all new. You do a great job of explaining and when you work through the levels of puzzles and tell what you are doing and why it is so helpful.

Omg this was extremely helpful. I have been doing the book version and on the medium part and having huge issues as I'm just learning so didn't know there was a technique or Snyder notation. Thank you explaining step by step. You have no idea how stuck and frustrated I was. Lol. This helped a lot. Your the best

Just learned about the max 2 Snyder notation from this vid. Very useful! I use to over clutter my puzzles with so many candidates per box it became a nightmare!
6:23 when you were writing a pencil markings for the possible fives, i noticed the 5 on the fourth box and i immediately said out loud "wait wait but there's a five there-- you can just put the five on the 3rd row of the 5th box :"D "
My brother from the other side of the room was so confused as to what i was talking about WHAHSHSH
The videos where we solve together is kinda fun, i get to use the things i learned in it. I think it was much better than seeing examples on articles that were hard for me to comprehend

What's weird is, I have a book labeled, MEDIUM and it has fewer numbers on the puzzles than most medium grade puzzles on sudoku websites. Some only have two numbers in the block with nine boxes.
Great tutorial, I've been doing medium sudoku for awhile but started using snyder notation only recently. Your pace is perfect. Allow ing time to see the reasons for the moves. Thanks

Very helpful to do "solve with you!"
An alternative approach to increase the fun, without making notations. I like the NY Times Medium, which occasionally are trickier than the hard level. First a good look at the grid and you start by placing all the 5s on the grid in a few seconds. Then, for more amusement, you solve all of block 3, which only has a given 5 in it. Typical NY Times restriction: the 1 and 2 pointinf from the left in row 3 and the 1s and 2s occupying col 7 and 8 in the lower blocks on the right side of the grid, all forcing a 12 pair in rows 1 and 2 of col 9: this places the 7 in r2c7 and the 9 next to it. The rest of the puzzle can be quickly solved from there. Most enjoyable puzzle.

That was great, Coach. I'd love to see you do some more of this. I particularly liked how you filled in candidates when there is only a single number listed in a row or column, while scanning. I haven't tried that in the past, but will definitely try that from now on. When I do a medium or hard N.Y. Times puzzle, I invariably end up using the Auto Candidate Mode which almost feels like cheating, so I hope to reach a point where I don't need to utilize it.
Thanks for the feedback Norm, its really helpful for me to know if this format of "solve with me" is useful. Auto candidate mode can be useful if you are stuck later on in a very difficult puzzle, but I like to use logic to fill in all the candidates, that way I am more immersed in the process. I don't think the Auto mode is cheating, but it is more passive than thinking it through until the end. Its so rewarding when you have an "ah ha" moment, right?

I got lost when you started talking too fast. I really want to graduate from doing the easy puzzles to the medium puzzles. Help!!!!! I watched your #1,2,&3 instructions. I can do the easy puzzles but the medium boggle my mind.

9 in box 3 can´t go in matching 1;2 pair, can it?
I wish this had helped, but I’m still stumped. When I try in a new puzzle I always hit a place we’re I must guess, and I ALWAYS guess wrong.
Thanks a lot for taking the time to share! I’ve been doing sudoku puzzle recently and moved to medium level so please bear with me; I’m confused by your choice at 27:14 to put the 3 in the fourth column as it could be 7 as well, why did you make this call?
I thought the same thing so played it over. The spot where she put the 3 was the only space (in the vertical column it’s in) where a 3 was possible. All the rest had 1, 4, and/or 7.
I am just starting picking up playing sudoku and I’m devouring your videos. However, I don’t understand why you start working with the 9’s after factoring in the 5’s. I don’t get that step. Please explain. Thank you

I’m confused at around 22:00 when in cell 6 you say this has to become a 9. To my mind there are other cells in that block that can also be a 9 ( underneath the 5). If you could clarify that would be so so helpful. @learnsomething 🙏🙏. These videos are so very helpful .
Yes a 9 can go elsewhere in the block like under the 5 as you point out, BUT in that cell no other number can go there, only the 9, so it has to be the 9. Hope that helps, and thanks for the comment!

In that cell, she was looking in the column and row it was in (straight line up and down, straight line across), and she already saw numbers 1-8. The only one missing was 9. Hope that clarifies!
at 7:30 - how can you declare the 1-2 as a matching pair without going through 3 thru 9? instead they might be part of a triplet or ??? I don't get it. seems like jumping to a conclusion prematurely.
In the top right hand block (block 3?) the 1 and 2 can only go into those 2 squares, they cannot go into any other squares in that block. So although it looks like other numbers can fit in, the fact that those 2 numbers MUST go into those 2 boxes all other numbers can be ignored.
