    There is a 50/50 chance of the pilots forgot to deploy them by negligence which I doubt it, because of checklists on every phase of the flight or an isolated fault in the hydraulic system. If the second is the actual problem ATC gave the pilots maybe the longest runway to be able to stop at secure taxi speed.
    Let's think a moment instead of judging something/someone, at the end of the day we weren't there to see what's actually going on.

    Fascinating!!! Great inflight arrival .. your footage has been spotlighted on airliners net

    if you look carefully the nosewheel touches down very late which could be why the spoilers waited

    The reason why he did not deploy them early enough is because, The Captain is trying to go from POINT A TO POINT B in the airport His Apron was probally guessing at the end of the runway. So he deployed the spoilers while he was going closer to his Apron so he had more speed to go their.

    Great video, this made me feel like I was on the plane :)

    The plane bounced on landing. The spoilers are set and armed before landing. Until the plane is stable on the runway, they will not deploy. The reason for the delay was just in case they had to go around. Once stable the spoilers deployed. The aircraft also has fantastic brakes and 4 engines with thrust reversers.

    sydney is an awesome city. the awesomeness slows down the aeroplane without the need of any spoilers :P

    I have an answer. During landings, the sensors on the landing gear need to make sure the landing gears touch all the way down, in order to activate the spoilers. This plane probably landed so smoothly, and that the landing gears were kept up in the air. Eventually after the planes main landing gears fully made contact, the spoilers deployed.

    @15chad15 Isn't this a near direct quote from the text, Multi-engine Operations in Five Easy Lessons by Capt. E. Fudd of Looneytunes Airways? I used that book to help me operate my blender.

    yes indeed, in 1999 AA flight 1420 from DFW skidded off the runway in Little Rock when the pilots failed to arm the spoilers on a wet runway

  • @RomanZerstoren
    @RomanZerstoren 8 лет назад +1

    Spoilers usually are being deployed automatically. But in some cases, for some reasons, such as very soft landing, spoilers are not deploying, then PNF should deploy them manually.

  • @shakenama

    Good question on the speed brakes - it's United, but it was at least a full 20 seconds after TD that the brakes were deployed..... guess they depend alot more on the reverse thrusters and wheel brakes

  • @sq380
    @sq380 14 лет назад

    @dual757 Spoilers are armed during approach for them to be automatically deployed during touchdown.

  • @mattbrohman3654

    I dont think he forgot to deploy the spoilers because his nose was not on the ground, the second the nose hit the ground he deployed them, I think, it took a while before his nose hit the ground in fact I thought he was flaring until I saw the spoilers deploy :) I could be wrong

  • @505stealth
    @505stealth 12 лет назад

    Well considering there was not much fuel left in the tanks, the guys up front forgetting to deploy the spoilers was just a mild mistake from protocol. After all the plane did not weigh much when it landed on the ground. About 300,000 pounds lighter once you landed into Sydney with some fuel reserve still left.

    nice landing its standerd procedere for the spoilers not to deploy on a long runway with a light load

    No really, didnt need to use speed brake early until a certain point to get to ther exit faster. But u do make a good point. I was just letting 'effective3 knw'

    maybe the pic forgot to set it to arm, and when he's going to idle the throttle just before 80 knots, he realized it. though, spoilers are more effective at higher speed.

  • @Airflow993
    @Airflow993 15 лет назад

    Looks like they forgot those spoilers, if the aircraft was so light that could have also caused some problems with the aircraft not settling on the runway

  • @manualflight

    Captain: "Oops hope nobody saw that"
    I actually have seen AA 757 at San Jose landed and slowed down completely without spoilers, I can't find the video anymore but an accident had occurred because of a combination of failures including forgetting to arm the spoilers.

    The spoilers are for loss sustentation over the wings so if you deploy spoilers to landing aproach u probably kill some people on the plane, you deploy the spoilers to transfer the charge over the wheels, insted the wings, to reduce the chance to skidding during the braking.

  • @TimA501
    @TimA501 11 лет назад

    In some circumstances there will be no need to deploy spoilers. I'm guessing that the terminal was literally at the end of the runway and there runway length was about 8,000 to 10,000 ft. Therefore retardation should kill the speed.

    • @jaysmith1408
      @jaysmith1408 9 лет назад +1

      +Scott Haysom The spoilers (and speedbrakes) have been armed, except the crew made such a smooth landing, that the sensor in the landing gear wasn't exactly sure if the aircraft had, indeed, landed. Only just before they deployed was there enough weight to deploy them, as the aircraft was still 90% flying.

    • @jthompson7661
      @jthompson7661 8 лет назад

      +Scott Haysom I have a feeling that the 747 has a weight on ground switch on its nose gear, which looking at the flare angle, only touched down further along the runway. They wont have forgotten I dont imagine as the speedbrake arming is mandatory on the 747's procedures.

    Your all wrong, With my Aeronautical degree from harvard and over 8000 hrs in the 747 cockpit. When reaching the outer marker and setting up the approach you SOP the spoilers to make them ARQ this way if there is any INOP the will override the redundency systems to make them AFLAC. This is text book. Now on landing you transverse the reverse thrusters this will make compression ratio drop to allow the AFI to activate when nose gear touches down. You need to go over your training manuels again!

    After that flight I would go straight up to the captian
    and get a answer of why they did not deeply the spoilers because 6 years ago there was a major crash at JFK because the spoilers were not deployed

    @sssoaring2 Sorry Melbourne is so much better than Sydney & It's airport (domestic & International) terminals are in the one building unlike Sydney where you have to travel between 2 buildings, Another advantage of Melbourne airport is that it operates 24 hours a day where Sydney can't because of people's complaints over aircraft noise. There is so much more to do In Melbourne than Sydney we have been voted as Australia's number 1 city & our state capital has always beaten Sydney.
