I decided to make a much needed hammer rack for my shop. At first I was going to just cut the stock and weld all of the joints. But I’ve been playing around will different ways of fastening metal and implemented this make shift rivet method.
I also decided that while I was fastening the metal by hand that maybe it would be in the spirit of the project to cut all of the metal by hand too.
At the end of the project I realized that it could have been completed with only a hammer, a drill, a hacksaw, and a few lag bolts for installation.
Welding would have been stronger but I think that the rivets are strong enough for the purpose.
Thanks for watching!
Be safe and get your make on!

Excellent video. I especially appreciate that the whole thing is done so clearly and eloquently without voice-explaining or background music. Thank you!
Thank YOU for watching!
cool project. i like the old fashion joining with rivets driven and cut by hand. reminds us all that making things by hand is possible
Doing thing by hand can teach you things about the material too. Thank you for watching!
The riveting part blew me away. Great job.
Thanks!
Nice job man, the riveting was well riveting to watch :) Keep em coming looking forward to your next one.
Thank you!
Also, I love, love, LOVE finding free scrap metal, like old bedframes. One of my favorite things.
Yes! I just harvested about 40 bed frames!
Wow! I've never been that lucky!
Awesome work, man!
Thanks!
Awesome. I love seeing how you try different things along the way.
Yeah, I didn't have to use the hacksaw but I figured I could use the exercise. Thanks for watching!
Excellent craftsmanship.
Thanks!
I was very impressed by this build, great job!
Glad you liked it!
You are awesome!.....I have been trying to findout how riveting is done 'old school style'....and now I finally got to see it done right. Thanks...keep up the good work!...and you only need it to be STRONG enough to serve the purpose (i.e.....that rack could take at a minimum a bit of fat boys like me bouncing around on them....and that is more than strong enough for the application....no need to WELD it strong enough to carry a truck when it won't be touching that kind of stress right! thanks again for sharing your work and ideas.
Thank for the taking the time to comment. Glad to hear that is was helpful!
Really nice! Those rivets look great too.
Thank you!
nice to see a way to make this if you done have a welder !! i wish i had a fast forward option like you when i am sawing metal :p great job!
Me too! Thank for watching!
Ok.... You are the man!!! Absolutely love it and cant say enough how cool that is.
Very good, very good indeed!
Thanks! Really glad you watched.
Limited to build (for unlimited tools, ironically) and left-handed?? This channel looks awesome!
Thanks, Tim!
You A Lefty also Sway? Us Leftys gotta' unite!..LOL! Dig your work Dude!.....Gus
Hell yes!
Simply Great. I knew it. YuDaMan. The list goes on, but seriously, This was thoroughly enjoyable and well done Justin, BRAVO SIR !!!
Thank you, Bill. Also, Thanks for the encouragement. It really helped light a fire.
Lutes!...Lutes You gotta' light a fire under me too Dude! I wanna start my RUclips Make Channel BAD! Tired of watching all you Guys from the sideline! "Put me in Coach!".. LOL! Have A Super Week!..... Gus

U know in your other videos u have used tack weld joints. but here ur doing riveting. that makes it old school and rustic and even sexier. maaahn u too good!!
Yeah, this was an experiment. It's still holding the weight very well. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I wish to Hell my guys would work this quick... Nice video. Thanks.
I do mean to add, this is Art, As much as a skill. "True Art is stubborn" ~ Beethoven.
Thanks! I love the quote too.
Great stuff you've got on here man!
Thank you!
7:55 you should put a rubber bumper guard on the lower left corner so nobody gets cut walking by. GREAT JOB!
Thanks.
agreed. especially that close to doorway.
thats really cool man, but i wonder how sturdy is it long term? are those rivets going to come lose and weaken if they rust? some sealant or thick paint might go along way with this project...
It's been great for a year and a half with no signs for failure. So far so good.
I love the rivets very cool
Thank you! I wanted to show that you can make metal things without a welder.
Good idea with the pinning. Gonna use that to make a branding iron
Thanks!
Bahaha I loved how you walked up to the pencil sharpener and then whipped out your knife to sharpen your pencil.
You're the first person to notice that joke. Good eye.
Then use a pen, or is it a mechanical pencil, to mark out the hole locations on the angle iron. Love it !
A fairly deep countersink would give your hand-hammered rivets a good bit more strength. The danger being with a straight bore that your rivet is spread too thin across the top. With a countersink you're guaranteed a bit of depth on the grip.
Yes, I would agree. But for a hammer rack it should be fine. Thanks for the feedback and watching!
That is some awesome storage, would clear up 2 drawers in my roll cab.
Jerry's This and That Thanks! It cleared up a bunch of room in my shop too.
I am impressed.
Thanks!
What is the gauge and compostion of the rivet material. I'm starter blacksmith building first metal/knife shop. You got my sub on this one!
The rivet material was from bar stock that I pulled out of an old inkjet printer. I'm not sure what it was. Steel of some sort I think.
great video brother. thank you William Lutes 4 referring me to your Channel. liked subscribed and notification turned on
Awesome! Thank you!
Cool, found you through reclaimed audio! Nice job (:
Awesome! Those guys are great. Thanks for watching!
Dang! You must be a HammerHead!!……..nice job btw! 💯👍😊
:)
Eres un jefe de la vieja escuela!!
¡Gracias!
Really nice project. Do you think some meaty pop rivets would work ?.
Yes, probably would work well.
Looked for it but didn't see it in the comments: did you chamfer the holes to allow the rivets you made to flow better and seat well, or just allowed the material to deform along with the rivet to lock it all together?
Good question. I didn't chamfer the holes. It would have been better if I had. Thanks for watching!
cool use of rivets
Thanks!
They used to build ships with rivets, i.e. the Titanic here in Belfast though I think your hammer rack will be ok.
Ha! Yeah, I don't think it'll sink.
What material these pins are made of?
Mild steel. I pulled it out of a desktop printer.
Very cool!
Thanks!
Good process
Thanks!
nicely done !!!!
Thanks, Gib!
Damn near a perfect video! No watching the slow parts in real time, and no inane music. A couple of things, though. When you're drilling on the press, you should have a fence to keep the metal from spinning, in case the bit grabs. And isn't the round end of a shot peen hammer used for spreading the end of a rivet?
Thanks for watching and the concern. I use a fence or a clamp for the smaller pieces. As for the hammer, whatever works.
okay. What hacksaw blades are you using? Looks like you made short work of that!
Lots of cutting oil and elbow grease. ;)
2 quick questions...
What was your reason for doing the hammered in pins? just curious is all.
2nd, what was the thing you spun on the table at the end? right as it starts to slow and stop a suggested video popped up over it
Thanks for watching! The rivets are an alternative to welding for anyone that may not have a welder. The spinning thing at the end is just a piece of metal scrap.
That was really nicely done. Great video great looking hammer rack.....Subscribed..
Thank you!
Make Build Modify Your very Welcome..
0:48 cuts like butter... 1:42 more butter... 5:45 home made rivets... NICE!
Ha! Thanks!
What lubricant were you using while drilling and sawing?
And what did you use to assemble it? Doesn't seems like nut n bolts.
I used tap and die cutting oil for the lubricant and I used mild steel dowel for the rivets. I think I pulled the steel dowels out of an old inkjet printer.
nice i like it well done
Thanks!
Very nice.
Thanks!
Good idea!
Thanks!
Excellent job an simple Q: why 30 hammer , do you use it all ? too much
Never enough.
Cool idea!!
Thanks!
Very cool 💪🏾👌🏾
Thanks!
premier fois que je vois la vidéo ,quand tu coupe le métal avec la scier wow
Merci
amazing
Thank you! Cheers!
Monster)))) Don't U have electric saw for this work?)))
Yes, I was having fun.
Did you happen to get any of those on the streets of New York?
I'm not sure what you're referring to. If you're talking about the hammers the answer is no.
+Bill Livolsi
Bill, Im telling Jimmy you called him a joke !
Uh oh bill, your understanding trouble now. Lol
+Bill Livolsi Ha! I totally missed the reference.
very cooool!!!
what's the rivet material?
I think it was mild steel. I got the stock out of an old printer.
Make Build Modify thank you!
Looks like 1/4 " rod
excellent!
Thanks Sandy!
Funny, but it took a hammer to build it. Great idea.
Thank s for watching!
Its funny, People think this is sped up. But this is just how fast he works..
Lol! I slowed it down a little.
what are you using for the rivets
It was some mild steel rods that I salvaged from an old printer.
nice. I was thinking 62xx aluminum from 'Lowe's'
Excelente!!!!!!!!!!!!..............
Gracias
Nice!
Thanks Anna!
Was that just like a 1/4" rod?
I see it was just a rod pulled out of a printer ... maybe that would be a good store to sit at the edge of a dump ... pull apart the useful stuff and separate it into raw materials that can be used again.
Yeah, I take apart almost all of my old appliances for stock and parts. It's a sickness.
Good job bother
john black thanks!
Where do you get those rivets? The name of them? Thank you
The rivets were cut from 1/4" bar stock that I pulled out of an old inkjet printer.
some much hacksaw you are way more patient then me
Lol! Thanks for watching!
Cool
Thanks!
what dril you use for rivets?
I used standard high speed drill bits and either a hand held power drill or my drill press.
Sorry I meant to say what type rod do you use for rivets?
Nice build...and with no welder..
Thank you!
so what was the reason to picking rivets over spot welding?
Aesthetics?
I wanted to give the viewers an alternative to welding. Many beginners don't have a welder. It looks cool too (I think). Good question. Thanks!
Make Build Modify I'm sure they'll appreciate it, keep it up, I enjoy your videos
I don't have a welder and never will. Cool rivets.
This gave me anxiety.
Especially the 2" angle cut with a hack saw.
;)
Продай молотки, купи болгарку )))
И сварку ))))))))))))))))))
точильщик на столе 1:34
офигеть, заклепки
;)
molto comodo 👍
;)
i am disappointed ,,,, no angle grinder action ???
but the hacksawing/drilling of every piece was mesmerizing..
maybe sell off a few hammers and buy a angle grinder, all good youtube videos start with grinding up scraps to hack a hack that doesn't need to be hacked
The hacksaw was just for fun. In fact you can see a right angle grinder in the background at 1:47 ;)
Im wondering how long the video is without speeding it up😁
Waaayyy too looonng.
all those hammers and not a single power cutoff tool??
J Wilson Read the description..😉
cut off tool, not welder reading owns.
J Wilson Please take your time and read the entire description.
Human bandsaw!
Yup. ;)
well done, but....
All those hammer types and you're using a (rip claw) framing hammer to peen your rivets?
{shaking my head with amusement} : )
You're the first person to find that easter egg. 1 in 144,000.
Il faut
Merci
Why not just use a grinder? It's been so long since I've seen someone use a file to get burs off ahaha.
I know right!? I was just having fun. There was a grinder sitting right next to me too! (1:37) I also sharpened my pencil right in front of a rotary sharpener at (0:13)....:)
Do they have rotary sharpener for woodwork pencil??what type of material for the dowels revert?gain to know it's darn soft????nice video broo
sorry but you got an angelgrinder right next to you and you use ah hand saw how stupid is that
What?
Great idea.
Thanks!
