Brian, I imagine that being a historian-being familiar with dark times in the past and how they were shaped-makes the election results even more discouraging. I’m wishing you and other like-minded Americans strength in your fight for democracy and decency in your country.
I feel so thankful to have listened to Brian talk about his anger around the results of the American election. It renforces my despair of how slow the human race is to accepting each others race. I just knew that a black woman would never be elected no matter how well equipped she is to do the presidential job. Respair is such a good word for us now to go forward!
Respair is definitely needed now. I have been finding solace in Astra Taylor’s Age of Insecurity and in Kate Beaton’s cartoons about history (Hark! A Vagrant). Ivy’s Tree is on my TBR.
Thanks, Shawn. This video is itself a bit of respair. Here's hoping you won't have to build a barracks out at the farm for all of your American friends. Like your mystery guest, I now feel more anger than despair, but I know we have a long, hard fight ahead.
I don't know if someone in Canada and the US even noticed, but the day after the US election the German government imploded and we are very likely going to have a snap election in March. And I'm very worried about the expected results. So I had even more to process that day and it's a day I will definitely always remember. Brian, as always, had a lot of intelligent things to say. And Shawn, I think the time has come to delete your Twitter/X account.
Yes I had seen headlines about that but haven' t followed up - I learned more about it from your comment than from any other source! Incumbent democratic governments are on shaky ground the world over, it seems.
I have given a link to this segment to Rainierbooks, who complained that booktubers largely abstained from reacting to last Tuesday’s election results. I pointed out that you did not. You might hear from him. He broadcasts from Sweden.
I think it's always worth it to bring up our election next fall so we don't get too smug, I am very worried that the republican political advisors will be hired, and they certainly know what works. I think Brian writing a mystery with his wife sounds like it must have been so much fun. Thanks for the video, as always.
Racism and misogyny. I am hoping to get to sad from the intense anger I felt. I truly just felt done with it. I don't have children and I felt the people who had kids and grandkids betrayed them.
Respair-yes! What a wonderful discussion with Brian. Thank you.
🧡
Respair is the perfect word. Love seeing this conversation between two of my all-time favorites.
💕💕
Respair! A very beautiful word that is very much needed. Loved seeing Brian as your mystery guest.
Glad you enjoyed it! 🧡

@@lindysmagpiereads I think that’s right. But after the initial shock they have also given me reason to hope. Thanks Lindy

What a wonderful conversation with Brian. It's perfect timing for this difficult week. I've found comfort in booktube this week.
Booktube is always there for us in tough times, isn't it? 🥰
Thanks Shawn. That came out great.
🥰
Thank you for the words, Shawn. I have been avoiding all social media except booktube (is this social media?). What a dark week it has been.
Dark, indeed! 😧
I am in dire need of respair and thank you for dusting off this word. Yay for this mystery guest!
🥰
Respair is my new favorite word. Thank you!
Yay! 🥰
Best mystery guest!!
Absolutely!

Oh, well I have not heard of them although I am of course familiar with Kate Beaton. Can't wait to hear what you make of Ivy's Tree!
@ Taylor’s Age of Insecurity is a finalist for the nonfiction GG; winner will be announced Nov 13.

Thank you for "respair"--I needed that.

Oh lovely, thank you for doing that!

Yes it's important to get rid of any smugness; Canada has it's own horrific sins.
Racism and misogyny. I am hoping to get to sad from the intense anger I felt. I truly just felt done with it. I don't have children and I felt the people who had kids and grandkids betrayed them.
It's hard not to agree.
Brian! 🤩
