Dear You, everything you do and say about your process, is that of an artist. You are an Artist. Most of us carry around thoughts or being an imposter. Hard to believe that life can be this fun and creative - it is. I’m an old person now, and I love your approach to your home and your art. It’s full of thoughtfulness and care and not overly precious. Keep creating. 🎉

Hi Leslee! This comment made my day 🥹 Especially what you said about life being fun and creative - it can be so easy to fall into a headspace where anything that feels joyful or comes easily is discarded to focus on the things that come with struggle or intense effort. It’s taken me awhile to realize that the things we toil away for are no more valuable than the beautiful moments that life hands us. I’m happy to able to incorporate that into my artwork. Thank you so much for watching and sharing your insight ❤️❤️❤️

@@REISSUED I agree with Leslee 100%. Art creation has little to do with a formal education. Yes, knowing art history and having reference to great artists provides a platform and launching point for creating something new, and technique is often essential to composition even in abstract work. These works are absolutely beautiful.

I was a dancer in my youth, designed clothing in Los Angeles for thirty plus years, retired, moved opened a store, sold that, did display for Anthropology for six years, and I still feel like an imposter in my artistic goals. Your work and home are fresh , on point, inspiring . Bravo ! Can’t wait to see what you decide to share with us next.

Hey Laurie!I appreciate you taking the time to watch and share your story! I often find that the artists that do everything are the people that make the most unique and inspiring work. But it can be hard to see it that way when comparing to the artists that go all in on one specific thing. I’m sure your range of experience shines through beautifully in the things you create. Glad to have you here ❤️

Your work is terrific! You don’t have to air quote being a legitimate artist. That’s just a belief system. Being self taught means you’re truly pursuing a passion and the first person practicing anything was not trained in a school…and they were legit! Art grows from artists viewing and experiencing art… and people will borrow from you. Totally normal.
I just watched a Van Cleef & Arpels video and both the people working on setting rubies into rails, jewels that are precious and took years to assemble the same shades that will sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars, many millions, and they are self taught. In fact many of the VC&A lapidaries are self taught, or taught in house. Sooo.. you’re legit! Rock on! I love your ‘stache. I was very disappointed when Tim Tracker shaved his, so I’m grateful I get to admire yours.

I think that it is easy to get caught up and overwhelmed by the options when starting a new piece or a project. It was a revelation to me when I had an instructor who said “turn off your voice of judgement” during the initial part of the creative process. It is very freeing (and takes a lot of practice). Then you go back after with a more critical eye.
Your work is amazing. You should not feel imposter syndrome when you call yourself an artist. You are incredibly talented.

OMG, your dog is too cute. I had to put my Old Girl to sleep last week so I've been pretty down. 🐕Your artwork turned out great! I did a similar thing years ago when a friend begged me to show at an art crawl she was currating (one of the artists backed out). Reluctantly, I agreed and then had to come up with something to show. So I bought old baroque style frames from vintage stores, gessoed them and made "art" by scribbling on newsprint paper (it was the cheapest). I first crumpled the paper, then ironed it flat to give it some character. I used pencil and charcoal for the scribbles and couldn't afford fixative, so I used my roommate's Aquanet hairspray!I worked in a frame shop at the time, so I was at least able to make nice mats for everything. My "work" looked great together and I sold almost every last piece! The other artists were kind of pissed. I guess I shouldn't have mentioned that I made everything in a week. 😮

Haha omg this story is amazing! Yeah I often find myself creating at the last minute with whatever I have on hand. I have sold my art, had a few showings at small galleries BUT when people ask what I did for a living to say those words "I'm an artist" still sticks in my throat? Such good advice. Sometimes with art, it’s difficult to lay down “rules” or even steps, but here you explained it through your secrets so well. At first, my favorite tip was “Don’t force it,” because damn, yes. But the idea that there’s a point (possibly more than one point) that you’ll hate it very much and feel like you ruined it, which leads back to Don’t force it! The idea to trust the process and keep going is difficult to accept.
Allowing plans to change, interpreting the way all the parts fit, and so often the materials can take you in a whole new direction. That’s when art gets really fun and active!
    Thanks again!

Art is simply a pleasing arrangement of shapes and colours and that basically sums it up. We all have different ideas of what ''real art'' should look like, and people are often too quick too dismiss a fantastic piece of art just because it doesn't fit their ideal concept of what that should be. I love your artworks, you think outside the box, and I think that's what makes your pieces so unique, VERY ARTISTIC and beautiful. 🖼🖌

Love your ideas and tips!! I’m a creative person who has focused forever on my job and daily life, and taken almost no time to express my creativity. I understand how creating something/doing something you love feeds the soul, and I’m at a point now where I want to start adding these things into my daily life. You have inspired me to think “outside of the box”! Thank you! Looking forward to more of your videos ~ 💜🩵💙

Just a little tip, try using wallpaper adhesive instead of mod podge when initially adhering the paper I find that you get less wrinkles when using prints.

I'm an art broker and curator, and I HAVE to say.... the painting you've had for ten years that was an OG printer-strip "Portrait of Flapper Girl".... Oh no. Honey. Most times I love revamping stuff and I LOVE thrifting and I dig what your doing. BUT historically, and speaking of technique and era. I think painting over THAT one in particular....Could have been a mistake. I could be totally wrong, and HOPE I am! But I have found many a priceless treasure thrifting and sometimes you wouldn't know its value unless YOU KNOW. Keep being creative Love your gift!

Thank you for sharing this! I have never heard of the Rasterbator. I do love decoupage. If you ever have a project you want to keep from absorbing so much liquid and rippling, try painting shellac onto the paper first. Once it’s dry, the shellac will keep the paper from absorbing the moisture from your mod podge. It will sit flat without bubbling. Remember, Vincent van Gogh? He only ever sold a couple of pieces to his brother. Having a paying audience doesn’t make you an artist.
. “ if you work with your hands, you are a laborer. If you work with your hands and your head, you are a craftsman. If you work with your hands, your head and your heart, you are an artist”
    -Saint Francis of Assisi.
