Today I want to fully explain the ending of Disney’s Encanto and understand how Mirabel was able to save the Madrigals!
Throughout all of Encanto, Mirabel was at the center of the story fighting to preserve her family and their magic, but along her journey, she discovered a vision from her Uncle Bruno that she would be instrumental in the destruction of her family’s miracle which of course did not surprise her Abuela. For many years Abuela Alma had been convinced that their magic started to die the day Mirabel didn’t get her gift.
Abuela had always believed the Madrigals' work and dedication would keep their miracle burning, and each new generation would be forced to take on that burden. Everyone had to constantly be the best version of themselves; they had to constantly be helping everyone around them, and they had to keep fighting for their magic or risk losing it all together, and Mirabel’s apparent failure to receive a gift indicated to Abuela that she was not worthy of their miracle.
The Head of Story on Encanto, Nancy Kruse explained that Mirabel was rocking the boat and showing cracks in the balance the family was trying to strike - the one they thought worked fine - so at first they told Mirabel to stop what she was doing. However, Mirabel kept going, not fully realizing yet that her destiny was to destroy the boat they were all in, in order to build a new one that could fit everyone, rather than excluding the people that didn’t.
Because of Mirabel, Bruno was welcomed back to their home, Luisa and Isabela were free to be their true selves, and Mirabel was finally seen as a valuable member of their family. In this new era, Mirabel brought together the Madrigals as a team which is why they were able to rebuild their Casita, establish a new foundation for their family, and create a new miracle. By creating something new for their family, the Madrigals were able to be healed again.
Have a magical day, fun people!

Dose anyone else think that she didn’t get a door originally bc after she touched the candle, she wiped her clothes/herself? Instead of transferring the magic to the house, and thus to a door, she transferred it to herself. She is shown to be excellent at sewing, her own clothes are more elaborate and detailed then the rest of her family! She made the little jaguar to bring comfort to her cousin, and it even seemed to comfort Bruno! She literally sewed her family back together by fixing the gaps that had grown between them, even between herself and her grandmother. Sometimes to fix a stitch, you have to rip it out completely , like the foundation of the house needed to be completely redone!

I crochet and needlepoint, so I like your description. But I don't think that the magic flowed through the candle and into their hands. The magic of the family is based on Catholicism, because they call it a miracle. The magic was put into Abuela's wedding candle after Abuelo sacrificed himself for his family. So, I'm going to guess and say that Abuelo was able to grant them a miracle and it is his blessing that is within the candle. That is why the house, the candle, and Mirabel are all connected. Mirabel didn't get a room, because a candle doesn't get a room. Abuela got a room, but not the candle. Mirabel is the new candle, because she is the most like the originator of the candle, Abuelo. With herself being the most like him and having Abuela's blood as well, she is a living candle and is capable of bringing back the magic in their house. At the end, the focal point is no longer the candle, but Mirabel, which is shown on her door.

I honestly think that Mirabel's gift was her connection to Casita since she was the only one that connected to Casita by seeing the cracks, destruction, and Casita even helped her get to the candle and protected her till the end. Casita even welcomed and dragged Mirabel in first out of everyone in the family. She probably didn't get a door and stayed in the nursery as it's seen that Casita can't do anything within the other rooms, this would have broken the connection between them.

I think Mirabel in a way DID get a gift. If you look at all the magical gifts the Madrigals have, you see something very interesting... they're all just magical versions of personalities and things people can do for themselves.
-Abuela is the matriarch; her candle is a sign of light in the darkness, but when she lost sight of the true meaning, things began to fall apart. She, in truth, burned everyone out because she forced them to burn too brightly without giving them the space to breathe and glow. We also see that she is in fact, the least connected to Casita. She never interacts with its magic, only ever the candle or talking to Pedro, her late husband. This indicates her trauma, being trapped in the past, and how the foundation begins to fail.
-Julieta (Mirabel's mom) is the nurturer; caring for those who are ailing, and cooking for those you love. But just like eating to feel better can be unhealthy, Julieta can't heal everything by being sweet and nurturing, just like how she smothers Mirabel with love to try and compensate for Abuela's coldness. By trying to make everything good for her child, she ignores the issues and feelings that need addressing.
-Pepa (Mirabel's aunt) is passion; people can change the atmosphere of any space they enter with their moods. Whether or not these changes are good or bad is all in how healthily you deal with your emotions. Pepa is energetic, and feels deeply, so because of all the pressure she deals with, she tends to be nervous and smothers her feelings to avoid her gift. This leads to more drastic outbursts when they do happen, because she can't accept herself.
-Bruno (Mirabel's uncle) is insightful; many of the visions he gained a bad reputation for were things that people would have learned through being observant. This, combined with his mother's pressure to use his gift, the complexity of using it, and the bad responses he received, led him to fear his power. This caused him to begin closing his eyes and giving up the moment he saw something bad, but looking away from possible negative outcomes stops us from moving forward, as we saw with his life. He wound up isolating himself and never moving forward because he didn't want to fail, face rejection, or acknowledge what he could see happening.
-Isabela (Mirabel's eldest sister) is the pleaser; she uses her plants and maintains a perfect image to reassure and please others. This is why she mentions practiced poses, only grows soft, sweet, pink flowers, and never acknowledges anything but perfection in those around her. She expects as much effort in those around her, and denies her true feelings.
-Luisa (Mirabel's second sister) is steadfast; she is strong and reliable, but not impervious. Strength is a simple gift, and if she'd been a less earnest person, she would have left things at that, but we see that even without her gift, she's still quite strong. She didn't just accept the gift as it was, she trained her body and continues to do so. She has a large, strong physique.... but people like this tend to forget themselves. In devoting her life to being strong for others, she forgets she needs time to be alone, do things for herself, and relax.
-Dolores (Mirabel's eldest cousin) is a listener; we all can hear, but not all of us can listen. Dolores listens to everyone, and this can be good.. and bad. Some things are private, some things are for sharing, and some, as we see, can burden others. Sadly for listeners, they rarely have someone willing to take time and listen to them, so they struggle with knowing other's problems and having no one to help work through their own issues. This leads to Dolores becoming withdrawn, and developing a bad habit of struggling with secrets.
-Camilo (Mirabel's second cousin) is social; gregarious, energetic, and looking for a good time, he shows people how others see them to make them feel accepted. He is shown to know everyone around the community, calling them by name and shifting to elicit a smile. But at the same time, his constant shifting shows how uneasy he is with himself as he is; while he can mirror everyone else, no one can be a mirror for him to reflect on and think. So he feels he must always keep up the act and work to make everyone else smile. We see that he's so unused to being himself, even when vulnerable, that when his mother accidentally zaps him while the Casita is struggling, he flits through a few different people to avoid his own face being used to show distress to his mother.
-Antonio (Mirabel's youngest cousin) is empathetic; he's quiet, kind, and loving, but easily influenced by his surroundings. He felt everyone's fear as his ceremony approached with memories of Mirabel's incident in their minds and tried to run from his own. He spends most of his time with Mirabel, and can not only sense how much she has to give, but how much she needs in turn. It's why he needed her with him; he needed the strength she had to share and wanted to share his moment with her. His open heart full of compassion lets him connect with animals even before his gift, but his youth made it easy for him to be swept away by the moment and forget things.
    And finally....
-Mirabel is familial piety and love; even after receiving no gift and being considered as in the way and lesser for her entire life, Mirabel felt nothing but deep pride at being a Madrigal. She isn't perfect, so she struggles with typical sibling jealousy and a desire to prove herself, but never once do we see her ever be anything but devoted to everything that is her family. Her love is proven in her every little action; we see NO ONE else but her mention "Abuelo". Alma would woefully pray to her husband, but we see Mirabel happily giving her grandfather's picture a morning greeting. She also is the only one who treats the Casita like a person, a member of the family. She talks to it, they work together to do chores, she apologizes when she accidentally "insults" it by saying it couldn't decorate itself, then compliments it. When the first signs of faltering happen, it only shows her the cracks. She calls it by name like you would anyone you cared for who was in pain. THIS is her gift. She did not get a door... because the whole house, the whole family, is her magic. She was the lynchpin that determined how their fate would turn, and that is why her doorknob being used for the rebuilt door revives Casita and restores their magic.

Another hidden lesson I loved with the house collapsing is many people have grown up with the statement - “what happens in this house, stays in this house.” I have never liked that statement because it’s not true. Mirabel made to feel insignificant, Isabella feeling like she couldn’t be authentic & pressured to be perfect, Luisa feeling like she’s useless if she can’t carry the weight of her family, Bruno made out to be the villain - these issues being ignored & undiscussed caused the home & family to collapse. I hope this film opens the floor for discussion in many families because I promise you, a lot of us have cracks in our casitas that are ignored everyday. Without a change, it can destroy not just a house but a family.

I've said for a few days now that Mirabel would be Abuela Alma's successor. One thing we have to remember is that Abuela herself doesn't have any gifts, but her children and grandchildren were all granted them. Mirabel, like Abuela, is a neutral party when it comes to the next generation receiving their gifts.
One thing I was thinking about while watching this: All of the gifts seem to be one-sided. Or, to put it in another way, used in only one fashion. Luisa's superhuman strength is used only for lifting/moving heavy objects. Isabela's gift is used solely for decorating. Pépa's gift for controlling the weather with her emotions seems to be just that: controlling the weather. Need a little rain to water your vegetable garden? Tell Pépa a sad story. Want a light breeze to fly some kites? Get Pépa jealous or angry. Julieta's gift of healing people with food is also one-sided. She cooks up some arepas (kind of like thick corn tortillas, almost like pita bread from the description I've seen) and other stuff, and you're cured after just one bite.
But Mirabel helps people see the other side of their gifts. I think the butterflies and doors are both metaphors for the family's gifts. Doors can be opened and closed from both sides, and regardless of which side of the door you're on, there's still a door that can open and close. Yes, it can look different from either side, but it can still open and close. Butterflies, like you mentioned, are symbols of change or transition, and everybody changes when they receive their gifts. Mirabel helps them change even further.

Encanto has another exciting new way of telling a story for Disney. It's almost a reverse of the usual fairy tale they do. Mirabel is outwardly ordinary, has no magic, and doesn't have animal sidekicks. She is definitely not a princess. But despite being superficially "average", she has a tenacious intelligence and drive within her that allows her to see things her family don't and go to incredible lengths to help them. She's utterly radiant and she's one of the best Disney protagonists I've ever seen. All of the Madrigals are great characters, in fact. I didn't dislike a single one of them, even the less helpful ones.

I sort of agree but I wouldn’t say Mirabel is the first protagonist to be clumsy or ordinary, I’d say Anna falls in this category as well despite being a princess, I think most female protagonists in Disney movies recently have fallen into the less than perfect stereotype, but all of them have some quality that redeems them including Mirabel, the description of the ordinary main female protagonist doesn’t feel like news anymore, there’s always been a variant of that in most recent Disney films, also Pixar if we want to include those

I've had "We Don't Talk About Bruno" playing on a loop in my head for a week now. Often accompanied by some 50-year-old hobo dancing along with a metal pail on his head and a rat in his hand.
Disney's really been into the twist villain thing lately, but this time they inverted it with a twist good guy. Lime green is the signature color for more than a few Disney villains, because it casts the skin in a pale, sickly look that implies the character brings death. But this time, they used lime green to signify how Bruno is perceived by his family and community, when in reality, he's actually very much one of the good guys, and his eyes only glow green during his visions because that's just their natural color enhanced and made luminous (Pepa also has green eyes). He's also a lot like his father, willing to sacrifice himself to protect his family, and especially Mirabel, yet also finding a way to stay nearby in order to make sure they're okay.

Each generation has a person that brings balance and leads the family in their own way. The progenitor is abuela. She is the original head of the family and the one that keeps the family together (in her own way, except Bruno). Juanita is the next madrigal of balance. The casita saw this in her and decided to give the gift of healing. This is both literal and figurative. What abuela couldn’t fulfill In being the balance of the family, Juanita did. She manifests an actual gift unlike her mother because the casita knew that her generation did not need a head of the house yet. Mirabel is the third bringer of balance, the casita sensed this in her, hence it responds to her the most. This is also why her room, the nursery, is directly across from abuela and she is the only one to notice that everything was not ok.
The entire movie was about the rights of passage. The process of abuela stepping down as the head of the family and mirabel becoming the new head of the family, with new perspectives, new leadership styles and a new form of balance.

Isabella said "He told me that the life of my dreams would be promised and someday be mine" and Dolores' reading was "He told me that the man of my dreams would be out of reach, betrothed to another".
    Spoiler alert:
If you saw the ending, you know exactly what I'm about to talk about. Isabella broke up with Mariano and set Dolores up to him as a rebound. That means Mirabel does have a gift and it's not what you expected. Mirabel's gift is to be unpredictable, to break everyone's expectations. She clearly broke the prophecy when it was predicted. Without Mirabel, all of Bruno's visions come true, but with Mirabel in the picture it all becomes uncertain because she's the only one who can change it.
Bruno saw that the house would be fixed of Mirabel made up with Isabella and it came true, at least for a while. Then the opposite happened and the house broke down as a result. Mirabel's gift isn't magical, but more of a conceptual one. She isn't bound by rules, not even predictions of the future can dictate what will happen to her. It's not as nifty as it sounds but when paired with Bruno's prophecies, she can actually make the outcome better or for worse

I actually didn’t mind whether or not in the end that Mirabel didn’t get a gift or her own special door. In a way she had a special gift, and that was to be herself. I believe in a way it shows that Mirabel is the only one to remind her family what it was to be a family, flaws and all. In the end, she was the Miracle of the Madrigal family needed. To me at least she was the ‘Heart of the Madrigal family.’
I also like that theory that everyone is saying that Mirabel would be Abuela’s successor of the Madrigal family. In a way I can see it, if you think back in the film she and Casita share a connection. Casita was always there for the Madrigal family especially Mirabel. Throughout the movie Casita in a way was more like a character itself in the Madrigal family, and to Mirabel always helping her and watching over her and the family. It almost reminds me of the Ocean in Moana in a way, the Ocean looking after and watching Moana when time being, just as Casita did with Mirabel.
There’s a theory or example like when Mirabel didn’t get a gift, I think Casita knew that Abuela was having so much pressure on her family to be perfect that she and the family was loosing sight to their magical gifts that they forgot what it meant to be a family, that Mirabel would be special even if not receiving a gift to show the family they can be more than their gifts in a way. And when the cracks began to appear Casita knew that Mirabel was the only one to save the Miracle in her own way.
Also the fact that Mirabel didn’t get her own door, while in the end that Casita’s front door had her and her family illuminated shows that she was the Miracle of the Madrigal. In a way with that theory of Mirabel being Abuela’s successor shows that Mirabel will look after Casita and take care of her family.

Part of me wishes that Abuela wasn't so easily forgiven for how she treated the family and maybe it is because of my own personal experiences with my own family. I understand it is a Disney Movie, but they are also presenting the topic of a family overbearing their future generations with responsibility that was crippling them and, instead of seeing Mirabel and her sisters all standing up to Abuela, we just see Mirabel and her father speak up on two separate occasions. Again. It might be because I am emotionally charged thanks to my own experiences with this particular topic, but it could have been presented in a way that makes it ok for the family to break apart and for some of the family to go their separate ways because some refuse to change.

For if Mirabel got a Gift, They would all be oblivious to the family breaking apart because none of them would know what life was like on the other side without a gift and Abuela would have continued to be highly expectant of each family member. She was meant to be the one to make them realise that their gifts are not only their worth and make Abuela realise that she needed to love them unconditionally despite their unique gifts.

I loved this movie it made me cry, I've seen it twice and it still made me cry. I hope for a sequel to it, no villains again would be great I hate a mega villains in every movie. If u can write a story without a main villain and still be interesting that's a great movie. It would be awesome if mirebell gets a gift in the next movie or she can use all the families gifts since she holds the family together.

I think that Mirabel is Abuela’s successor too. In the movie, they are the only two characters to talk to casita. Also, it’s possible that Mirabel didn’t get a room because she will get abuela’s some day 🤔

I am honestly thinking of an Encanto show. Each episode is a family member's life, from being born to their future or their new life that is now. I would personally watch it. Even Pedro's life.
We NEED to know how Abuela is in the state that she was, and how Julieta and Pepa met their husbands

I believe mirabel is a reflection of her Abuelo, even though she did not have a gift she still spoke greatly abt her family and her willingness to save and candle/miracle despite her not even having a gift as well as how she saw how much it hurt her family speak volumes and makes me think of her as a reflection of her Abuelo

This video fully helped me understand and appreciate Encanto more. I think it didn’t feel as special in theaters cuz there were parts I didn’t understand, like the true meaning of the house. I also had expectations that weren’t met. One of those were the explanations of what the house actually is, and until this video, it didn’t click! I love your videos so much!
Edit: I also feel like the trailers portrayed a different film altogether, so I was expecting an adventure movie similar to Raya or Moana. But it was deeply interpersonal, it dove into generational trauma and relationships! UGH SUCH A GREAT MOVIE!

You mentioned at 3:48 that Mirabel, like her sisters, were desperate change. I think more than the desperation for change, it is the isolation, the loneliness and the feeling of the constant familial expectations and identity-crisis, that let to the sisters bonding with each other and brightens the candle. The final song (All of Me) concluded this notion that the Madrigals and their individualities are the gifts, with the whole family finally seeing Mirabel, and in turn making Mirabel see herself, the compilation and yet still uniquely….Mirabel Madrigal.

I HIGHLY doubt prayer sent the miracle. I like to think it was Pedro's spirit itself that gave protection to his family. Also Mirabelle's gift is understanding Casita better than anyone else. She and Abuela are the only ones who directly speak to casita

Encanto is great at showing how trauma be generational in families. It also shows how a family working through issues can be messy and how breaking down the emotional walls we build around ourselves is messy. However we need to knock them down so we can build connections to each other to replace the the broken-down walls.
Just as anyone who has ever been to therapy knows when you start talking about buried issues you feel worse before you feel better

I think Mirabel did get a gift. Her ability was her connection to Casita and by extension the family. Through out the movie, Casita seems to respond to Mirabel in particular, either through verbal commands or even acting out in response to her emotions. It does work for the others, yes, but it seems like it's going above to obey her. And since the magic of the casita ties directly to the family's state of being, Mirabel's gift would allow her a sort of mental connection to them. The musical sequences could be seen as Mirabel effectively reading her sisters or abuela's minds. Especially Abuela, where Mirabel seemed to be able to see grandmother's memories step by step in first person, as if she was actually there. As for why she didn't get a magic door or room until the end I think was because one: the whole of casita was effectively hers, making the whole house hers. And two: Casita does seem to have a consciousness of its own and perhaps did not know how to or maybe even couldn't represent Mirabel's gift as a door until the family could see her greatness themselves. And that's why Mirabel's door is the front door of Casita, representing her gift of family and home bonding

I feel like Mirabel’s gift is empathy and I’m going to explain why.
During the first part of the film, she wanted to have responsibilities just like the other family members and wanted to be perfect and be useful to the family and Abuela. When she finds out that each of the family members are struggling with expectations, stress and pressure. She doesn’t let them suffer after they shunned Mirabel just because she didn’t had a gift. She empathizes with them by understanding their feelings and making them happy by letting them having freedom.
She helped Luisa in a easy way by empathizing her after learning the pressure that Luisa was subjected to.
She also helped Isabela but it wasn’t easy due to the resentment that Mirabel had towards Isabela, she didn’t empathize with Isabela until the song where she wanted Isabela to grow flowers that aren’t beautiful just to make Isabela happy and not carry the burdens.

You know I thought the prefect one was gonna be the main bad guy, boy was I barking on the wrong tree. But the Abuela being the villain I didn’t see that coming. I never saw the movie, but I’ve read the plot.
And it’s hard to be the best at something when you feel alone or have high expectations. I mean look in Steven Universe. But to quote Professor X: “Often a gift can be a curse. Give someone wings and they’ll fly too close to the sun. Give the power of prophecy and they will live in fear of the future.”
And I get the Abulea being the eldest strived after her husband’s death, but the more she distend herself from her family the cracks grew. So in all fairness elderly people maybe wise sometimes, but when they take the wheel it always goes down hill.

Both Isabella and grams looked down on Maribel constantly letting her know she was unworthy even if Isabel is forced to be perfect there was no no need for her always telling her sister she ruined everything and that she hates her when their grams came at her baby sister she sat and watch the whole family was trash and they didn’t deserve the candle

    • @Coyoteprime

If you ask me Maribel was like Aladdin a Diamond in the rough. So her grandma should have learned humility and treated her children even her son who can only see bad futures with respect and love. And by that i mean equally.

Love how this was the second movie ( or should I see third family because of LILO and Stitch) along side Frozen that didn’t really need a villain and was just mainly focused on family, sisterhood, and characters having emotional breakthroughs and overcoming their weaknesses and fears to protect and save each other. I really want to see this movie.

The Yellow Butterfles are a reference to the book "100 years of solitude" in which they appear as a magical element associted to the character of Mauricio Babilonia. The book was written by the Colombian author Garcia Marquez, and it portrairs the "magical realisim" literary style that is so present in the movie: Reality with magical elements.

Ok in the waiting for the miracle song she felt really left out by the family and when the song ended she was still sad and that's when the house started cracking I think the magic is up to her and depends on what she feels about the family like pepa when pepa is sad she will have a cloud in her rain for example and same for mirable depends on what she feels about her family if she feels sad about the family and being left out the House will start breaking and when she is happy about the family and fit in the house will heal/ won't break and just makes casita

My theory is that Mirabel was chosen by the magic to become the next matriarch. If you think about it the Abella wasn't going to live forever and the casa could see that the familia was breaking due to pressure. But it also saw the way that Maribel loved everyone in her familia including the casa. Something that really pulls this theory for me is that the abuela herself doesn't have powers. Also notice that she was the only one able to reach the candle when the magic was fading, casa helped her reach it while it protected the others by getting them out.
