- The B-239 in War Thunder is a Finnish Plane in the Swedish Tech Tree that just happens to be a big upgrade to my favourite plane in the game.
The B-239 is a US F2-A Buffalo that is strapped with 4 12.7mm Swedish Machine Guns giving it some pretty incredible firepower. For some reason the Swedish .50 cals hit like a freight train.
In this video I pair it up with the BT-42 and then later the SAV.20.12.48 to take it to a higher tier to see how it performs!

It's not a swedish machinegun, btw. It's a finnish copy of a WW1 FN Browning 13.2 mm MG (the one used on early Swedish planes), with its caliber changed to 12.7 by the Finns.
That's why it has different ammo as well, because the Finns made their own special ammo.
EDIT: Fun fact is also that the FN Browning 13.2 was based on the M2 in the first place, so the Finns basically took a gun that was based on the M2 and then converted it back to an M2. In essence.
Yeah though In-game it really performs like a carbon copy of the Swedish m/39 cannon, it just annihilates any plane it looks at..

Brewster has one of the best kill/loss ratio of the war. It's around 25:1. On the right hand, it was OP in real life too. :)
Yeah it unfortunately got a bad reputation from facing elite pilots in Zeros.
I wouldn't trust a finnish sources from times of war. Soviets aswell too.

One thing I always see goes unmentioned, that is LeLv 24 (air squadron 24) insignia on the nose, and most aces in ww2 from Finland served there some time, being the most know squadron.

This things far from the worst 🤣
Its far from worst, when it comes to Finnish service where it fought other planes that were as old as it was. It had issues in pacific when it had to fight much more advanced aircraft, but finns used to flythem till 1944 and most of the Finnish aces, including Ilmari Juutilainen, the non-german ace with most aircraft shot down with 96 confirmed air victories and 126 claimed flew Brewster designated BW-264 up untill 43. It was great aircraft against its soviet counterparts, and could hold its own against even some of the newer planes soviets fielded like LaGG's and early Yak's.

@@martijn9568 the finnish brewsters were outfitted with different engines than the US ones and were significantly lighter, could've had something to do with the final reliability
SB2C-1 is far worse when it comes to the Flight Model (FM)
One factor WT has modelled but seemingly not mentioned is that FN Browning 13.2 and 12.7s had almost twice the rate of fire of their American originators.
Im pretty sure you can adjust fire rate on american brownings too they just chose to have slower fire rate

Just started playing WT after long break when heard there is finally Finn tech tree (portion). I love the thing on ARB especially cause I finally learned basic BFM flying some DCS meanwhile.

As many problems as I have with this game I have to admit they've nailed the new Cannon sound effects. Not to mention the new explosion effects on the tanks look awesome. Well done Gaijin🤯
There is actually a pretty crazy wartime story behind the 12,7mm in that plane. They are not Swedish but originally FN-made and improved copies of Browning M2 that Finns got the maintenance drawing from Swedes after failing to purchase them and made their own copy based on those :D
Apparently the LKk/42 is actually not directly copied or even derived from Browning M2 .50-cal, it's more of a cousin to the M2 if that makes sense.
The lineage of this gun starts from Browning M1921 machine gun, which was a water-cooled .50-cal.
Fabrique Nationale de Herstal (i.e. FN) licensed the M1921 and then developed this gun into something called Mitrailleuse D'Avion Browning-FN Calibre 13.2 mm. This air-cooled gun intended for aircraft use was chambered in 13.2x99mm.
Sweden acquired a small amount of these machine guns, and then reverse engineered the manufacturing blueprints out of maintenance charts that came with the purchased guns. After that, LM Ericson started manufacturing this rifle with the name Akan m/39A. Finland and the VKT (Valtion Kivääritehdas, or National Rifle Factory) got access to the blueprints reverse-engineereed in Sweden, and started producing the LKk/42 (Lentokonekonekivääri 42, or Aircraft Machine Gun 42), chambered in the .50 BMG (12.7x99mm) cartridge.
The reason why Finnish Air Force wanted the gun chambered to .50 BMG was related to logistics. The Brewsters, for example, were originally armed with Colt MG 53-2 as their heavy machine guns, these being M2 machine guns produced by Colt. But Finland did not have the license to produce more of these guns, so there was a need to start replacing them - but they wanted the new gun to use interchangeable ammo, hence the decision to chamber the LKk/42 in 12.7x99mm (or .50 BMG).
John Moses Browning of course continued developing the machine gun and eventually this led to the M2 Browning in 1933, but the M1921 was the last "common ancestor" for both the M2, and the Swedish Akan m/39A or Finnish LKk/42.

My best game with the SAV was 14 kills, without death, on "Aral sea" map. I even sent the replay to the "Thunder Show" but i guess it wasn't good enough, or was too long.
Thing is the Finns did in fact modify the Buffalo and had some very good effect with them. So hey, one time the copy-paste patch did well.
Technically both the Finnish and Swedish .50 cals are copied from the Belgian FN Browning M2 .50 cal chambered either in American .50 cal or Hotchkiss 13,2 for Sweden early on.
Ive been using these with the trumpet everyday since the patch, At 140 kills in the buffalo and 200 in the BT42. My 2 favourite vehicles

It's nice of you to show us these low tier vehicles now that there's only like 1-2 days a year where we can play them, since we have to be Rank 3+ all the time otherwise due to events that are CONSTANTLY running on WT nowadays...
In service from 1941 to 1945, B-239s of Lentolaivue 24 (Fighter Squadron 24) claimed 477 Soviet Air Force warplanes destroyed, with the combat loss of just 19 B-239s, an outstanding victory ratio of 26:1.

I just tried this thing in air RB and it's absolutely awesome. Great firepower and brilliant maneuverability. Most importantly, it's insanely fun. Thanks Odd for reminding me just how brilliant this little thing is. Looks like a baby P47, but turns like a Zero.
This became my new go to plane all the way up 6.7 it fly's rings around all those F4U and BF109k that are dumb enuff to dogfight,even downed a few early jets with it

Must admit I’ve always had a soft spot for the buffalo and especially the wildcat. Have to say though that when it comes to 50cals I much prefer the F82 and it’s freedom laser.

my favorite 2.3 plane has to be the yak-2 KABB, 4x 100kg bombs, 2x 20mm, 2x 7.62mm mg's and fairly quick and manouverable ontop of that. only downside is that it doesn't have any defensive armament wich it could have for it's size. but still.. amazing donker

Agreed, except for 2 vehicles, the ikv73, and stv42 EH, that 75mm is trash. The 3.7 slpr49 is way better.
