Great video George. I’ve just purchased a Sage Spectrum LT in 3/4. It’s the finest reel I’ve ever used - and I’ve used quite a few from the Hardy, Orvis range

Good video George. My 5 weight Goture reel keeps developing a groove where the fly line runs across the cross bar. So, I'm looking to replace it. Your video was timely. Thanks

My first fly reel was way back in 1987 ! Rimfly Regular 5/6 . I think is was 30£ . Today I have a Waterworks ULA , in a 2wt , 7wt , 9/10. Costing 700-1200€ each ! Like yourself George I got all when I had my tackle business. Do the expensive do anything more than the 30£ ? No really . Drag mostly important in Salmon fishing mainly. Thankfully fly angling gear is very affordable. You’d be fully set up now with rod/reel/line now for 150€ . Great video George atb Tony ps might see you during the season 👌👌

I run a Lampson liquid 7/9 wt for salmon over here on Cape Breton Island Can its got over 30lbs of drag holds 200 yrds it cost 125 cdn so far 3yrs no problems i believe its got a lifetime warrenty. For trout i run a 5/7wt gloomis i got it for 60 bucks cdn on sale so far so good. I find reels now that are well made can be pretty reliable for a realistic price..Me buddy got a hardy from the 60's i love the sound of it when he got a salmon on my point is the days of expensive reels are over theres alot of good companies out there chargin affordable prices for good reels imo.

Older cheap reels were heavy but balances rods very well, and have simple mechanics. My Martin reel is simple and has good weight, and clicks nicely. Its galvanized too, except for the reel foot that has developed some nasty rust..Thats spilling over to the nickle silver on the rod seat. They went excessively cheap-ola, and the reel is not even scottish😂

I never spent much money on reels before but I def realised u pay for what u get. I had a cheap greys GTS 300 and the lateral movement was that bad the fly line kept coming out through it. Ended up in the bin after a few sessions. I’m planning on buying a good reel soon. Like the look of the hardy marquis LWT, like u said there’s so many on the market now

I have mixed feelings when it comes to fly reels, I find most of them overpriced considering the lack of gears in them. Having said that, I do own a Voessler salmon reel that I can't tell the price of, just in case the missus ever sees this 😂😂. I use a Vision reel for my trout fishing, which I think are a reasonable price. I do like a quality reel, just because they are nice to use and nicer to look at, i just wish they weren't so expensive. Don't get me started on the price of the spare spools 😂😂 as I said, I have mixed feelings.

I am a great fan of the old JW Young reels - the Condex, Prixex and my favourite, the 3.25’’ Beaudex withe heavy wire line guard, halve been using it for more than 40 years on my cane rods for all my river trout fishing. A wee strip down, oiled occasionally, have recently sanded it down and refurbished it with nice coat of greet Hammerite - looks great, will probably outlive me! I succumbed to a lovely Shimano Ultegra 3’’ in the last few years - suits my 8ft Daiwa Lochmor rod with No4 line for fishing dry on the smaller streams. Many thanks for the great videos George, very enjoyable. GeoM
