    I think Simba's characterisation makes sense. As well as what you said, he repeats in the movie that he's trying to do what his father would want + parent Kiara in the way that his father parented him and Mufasa was also quite the helicopter. A lot of the conflict regarding Simba is that he idolises Mufasa and is trying to follow in his footsteps and do what Mufasa would do. Which is why he discriminates against the outlanders (like Mufasa did with the hyena's). I would say the worst characterisation is with Nala who becomes a background character with nearly no opinions on anything.

      YES Nala was so outspoken and brave as a girl and altho her spirit was obviously crushed by Scar, I thought she would make a comeback.

      Foreword: I'm not disagreeing with you; so don't think I'm trying to start a heated debate.
      If this movie had a bigger budget, more care put into it, and a longer runtime, Simba's story could have been expanded so well in this film. His change between carefree child with no guidance to King and Father (as said in the review) comes with their own sets of insecurities and anxiety. He doesn't want to lose his family now that he has a complete one once again. He doesn't want to lose his kingdom and have it go to hell in a handbasket again. The problem is this story goes absolutely nowhere - it exists purely for Kiara's line "You will never be Mufasa" - and that's that.
      Ironically, this concept was handled better in Kingdom Hearts despite having a worse story and less effort overall. Simba's story here so easily leads into the concept of being his own King; not trying to be Mufasa 2.0, doing what he thinks is right for his people, not what his father thinks is right... And it just doesn't. Obviously this was just churned out for a quick buck so they didn't put that much thought into it, but dang; a really great concept just falls flat on its face in a direct-to-video movie.

      @PhirePhlame 4 года назад +16

      Adding on, Mufasa's early death means:
      1.) Simba doesn't have a truly clear picture of exactly what Mufasa would have done since he saw it for such a short time, meaning he's probably relying mostly on assumptions.
      2.) Simba never got old enough during Mufasa's rule to see any of his flaws for what they were.

    I just realized they definitely planned for Kovu to be Scar's son and probably got pretty far into planning since they kept his design the same before some realized "wait a minute... Scar was Simba's uncle..." And they had to scramble to come up with something so there wouldn't be incest. Didn't work though, I thought as a kid and for the longest time he was Scar's son anyways. Shoulda changed his design at least a bit, maybe the colors or something

    I actually think that Nuka is the best character and I can’t see him as a villain. He didn’t really want to hurt simba instead he wanted to be the hero his mom loved. Ever sense kovu was a cub he was their prince and they always saw him to be everything they wanted. Yet nuka wanted to be that person. The fact he continued the climb calling for his mom to see can actually show how much he cared about this moment. He just wanted zira to be proud of him and didn’t give a shit about the revenge. So hostly nuka was the best character

    I think there's another nuanced aspect of Simba's behavior in this movie - one I COMPLETELY don't think the writers intended, but thinking about this makes it more enjoyable for me.
    Simba is, for all intents and purposes, someone who has gone through trauma. I mean, fuck, he watched his dad die and then killed his own uncle and all that shit with the hyenas, y'know. So, because of those memories from his childhood, he wants to make sure his daughter never goes through that kind of thing. He's protecting her childhood, but also inadvertently stifling it. He learned some things too quickly at a young age, but he forgets that those things do have to be learned EVENTUALLY - children must make their own mistakes, and sometimes, it's not a mistake at all.
    He sort of became his dad, but like, sideways and 50x more. Ohandalsohischildisfemalesolowkeymisogynybutthat'sawholenewcanofworms

    Butterflies also symbolize change, so you can see the butterfly metaphor as saying that meeting Kovu has changed Kiara. Which is what happened, but... probably not how the writers intended. Meeting Kovu opens up Kiara's eyes to discrimination and the ugliness and horror of the world. Every time he comes into her life, it's pre or proceeded by something awful happening.

    I always took the "them? us? Look at them. They are us. What difference do you see?" line to be about racism. The Zira lions are depicted as more dark furred than the Pride Rock lions throughout the movie (except for the sister that is the first to turn on Zira - forgot her name), but after that line, the fur looks the same.
    Also, this movie was my favourite as a child. I wanted to find a Kuovo of my own, though I think if I had been introduced to non-heterosexual relationships at the time, then I would also have desired a Kiara^^"

    Okay, the whole Kiara choosing responsibility love over Simba's "violence"? Seriously? Simba did not leave home due to an adolescent tantrum of rebellion. He was a child who just lost his father and followed the advice of his uncle, the other important male elder in his life, to run away for his own well-being. He fortunately found refuge with Timon and Pumbaa. I hate that Simba gets harshly criticized for leaving after what he suffered.
    When he does go back, he shows anger but also absolute control. He gives Scar the chance to go into exile, Scar backstabs him yet again, and even during their fight Simba only wants to defend himself. He throws Scar off him and it's the hyenas who wind up "ripping him apart" as Simba colorfully put it earlier.
    Throughout Simba's Pride, we see Simba having an internal battle as he tries to be a king and father. He can show anger and firmness, but doesn't use intimidation to the extent Mufasa did. Simba is extremely gentle by nature. He was in his right to kill Scar's followers, but banished them instead. He refused to kill cub Kovu despite Zira taunting him to do so. Even before the last battle, Simba gives Zira one final chance to go and, but she launches the attack, anyway.
    Simba was the one with a fully functioning brain in the sequel. He immediately detected BS from Kovu's 'rescue' of Kiara. He, wisely, kept Kovu on a short leash. I know everyone is stuck on Kovu as the dreamy, misunderstood bad boy, but come off it! Kovu only backed down because he fell for Simba's daughter. Not that I'm condemning Kovu. He's a pretty good addition, but an absolute innocent he is NOT.
    The big issue here is that the sequel's writing team gave Kiara the generic disney princess "freeeeedom" treatment. I enjoyed her relationship with Simba, but she was a bit of an entitled airhead. Simba got into mischief as a cub, but was utterly contrite and apologetic about it. He also *wanted* to be king someday. Kiara just wanted to play around then suddenly, she's supposed to be the voice of reason? Yeah, no.
    💛Simba: PTSD Survivor and True King💛

    • @natiao3589
      @natiao3589 3 года назад +3

      But, you know, Mufasa doesn't use intimidation to Simba. In Simba's eyes he looks intimidating, Simba thought that his dad is mad at him, but Mufasa did not shout at Simba, true, he was angry at his son (Simba disobey him and stuff), but he used this circumstances to give Simba one of his life's lesson. (Plus they played together after all and then Mufasa teached Simba another lesson about the King of the Past and all.)
      Furthermore, even when he once showed brutality, Mufasa did not killed hyenas, despite, that earlier they have intruded Pride Lands and moment ago they almost KILLED his son and another cub plus his majordomo. But he let them go. Same with Scar. Mufasa knew Scar hated him. He knew, that Scar would like to be king. Like damn, Scar even threated him, but Mufasa did not banish his brother, after all he rather trust him, according to Stampede scene.

    I dunno. I feel like Simba's behavior was an intentional and natural progression in this film.
    Like, even in the first movie, he was VERY clearly traumatized by his father's death. Like that shit haunted him FOREVER. Even while being raised by Timon and Pumba, it's clear the "give no fucks lifestyle" was just a way for him to not confront his trauma.
    So come the time when he's supposed to fight his uncle, take charge of a kingdom, and then raise a daughter (and son?)... his behavior makes perfect sense. Kiara is the fucking same as him as a kid. And there's no doubt in my mind that a part of Simba HATES how he used to act as a kid.
    Because- y'know- it blew up in his face in the biggest way possible. So he tells her don't wander off. Don't talk to strangers. Don't trust shady folks. Because those are all mistakes he made at her age that (in his mind) *lead to his father's death.*
    And I don't think it's speculation. It's in the text. Nala straight up says Kiara is basically him. The main theme of the movie "he lives in you" makes it clear Simba still has daddy issues. And then there's the terrifying nightmare scene (which would always get to me as a kid) where he is this close to saving his father only to watch as Kovu/Scar murders him.
    Simba has major PTSD and trust issues as a result. And the fact that Kovu looks EXACTLY like Scar is very likely triggering him.
    (I know this is an old video and you probably don't give a shit on some comment that reads into one little thing you said too much.)

I think it would've worked a lot better if it was with hyena antagonists (and in my fanfic rewrite of this fanfic rewrite, the antagonists ARE hyenas and we don't need to dance around Kovu's existence for half the movie). But anyway- for lions- Simba didn't oppress them out of xenophobia or othering? He banished war criminals for supporting the tyrant he overthrew? I mean, one thing to mention about simba's controlling parenting style is that his dad didn't really have strict rules (likely due to trusting Scar), and he watched Mufasa get murdered while he was still a cub, and then had to deal with the guilt of being gaslit by his uncle, and then ran away from his home to go live in the jungle with his two nutcase adoptive dads who take nothing seriously and push down survivors guilt and the idea he caused his dad to die (which is why he shirked his responsibility for years). Meanwhile, he could have rules and safety for his daughter so she didn't have to deal with the same thing.
    I know it's Disney and they are always doing the rebellious child and overbearing parent thing, but I think it's necessary to take into consideration that Simba isn't a cub or a member of the 3 hobo-musketeers anymore, and has a kingdom to run and a territory and family to protect.
    Just my personal speculation on Simba seeming "out of character".
    Edit: my saying Mufasa didn't have a lot of rules is more in relation to the different type of rules between Simba and Mufasa as fathers rather than the quantity or quality of the rules. Mufasa also instilled prejudice against the hyenas and had areas that were off limits, but seemed more open to allowing his son to go places without being looked after constantly, or giving Scar some mild responsibility to watch Simba. Mufasa simply had more eyes to watch him with, whereas Simba likely still carries trauma from being betrayed by a family member and so he only seems to trust himself and Nala to keep an eye on Kiara, thus the more extreme helicopter parenting.

    The thing that bothers me about Kovu's character is that I just see him as young Scar and I feel like Disney wanted to make him Scar's biological son, but then they came to realization that they cannot put that relationship substory in it since Scar is Simba's uncle and that way Kovu and Kiora would be cousins and that'd teach kids that incest is acceptable. That's why they threw quick excuse that "y'know, Scar is Kovu's step-father, although Kovu looks a lot like him and his name literallt means scar". I hate that in disney sequel movies they have to put maincharacters in unnecessary relationships like Brother bear 2 or Mulan 2 or almost every other disney cartoon that has "2" in it.

      He means how lions reproduce with their own family members. To explain what the hell I'm talking about, simba and nala are brother and sister apparently since there's only two adult male lions and one male cub in the pride while in reality lion prides usually have three adult males.

    • @alias_undercover
      @alias_undercover 4 года назад +1

      @@pootisbird4516 Actually in reality there's only one male, if there are more than one. The stronger one remains and the other lives. So it's normal animal routine

    • @pootisbird4516
      @pootisbird4516 4 года назад

      Oh that makes more sense but yeah the point basically is that simba and nala are related which is why Grizzly said there's some Alabama stuff in the movie.

    I love this movie. Fun fact: I actually grew up with the sequels instead of the first movies. The lion king 2 and the little mermaid 2 specifically. So if anyone talks shit about those movies, I riot. Until I grew up enough to comprehend things around me, I thought the little mermaid 2 was the original. Same with the lion king 2.

    This movie is so weird in the sense that if you added anything - and I do mean anything - it would radically change (for the better) the outcome of the movie. I have never seen a movie able to do this before. Like - changing Nuka to a more serious character and threat to Kovu, actually making Kovu Scar's son (which would make Simba's ill temper make better sense) - and ditch the romantic love angle for something deeper - like familial love instead --> (this idea came from a different video and I am 100% on board with that fix up), give Simba a son and make the daughter the second born and her love interest to an outside lion would bring tension to the Pridelands and within her own family - or if you want to keep the Romeo and Juliet story - actually make it good. Killing Kovu would've been very interesting and made the mary-sue not a mary-sue anymore, killing the daughter would also be very interesting and Simba would've had to bring in Kovu as the son he either never had or had lost previously. Make the daughter actually likable and less ditzy I.E. NOT a mary-sue. Clumsiness is NOT a character flaw. Too much time spent on the Outsiders and not enough time spent on the actual main characters. ... Do NOT make your hero from the first movie an anti-villain (overbearing parent) in the sequel - it's a dumb cliche. Also, a daughter that doesn't want to be royalty is also cliche and I hate it. LK2 could've been and SHOULD'VE been better.

    Personally, I LOVE the Lion King movies ... BUT! I feel like they have really screwed up Nala's character. In the original movie, she has few lines anyway, even as a cub. I feel like this could've been added on more, giving her more things to say. And in this movie.. PFFT! PFFT! PFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFT! She's literally a background character and pretty much has nothing to say. Most of the things she says are one-liners anyway like... ''Simba?'' ''Zira... ''VITANI!'' ''KIARA!'' ''SIMBA!'' It frustrates me.

    I never understand how people took " them? us?" as racism allegory or something. They're the same race! If you want to add allegory it more about different views. Like some lions choose Simba as King and some Scar.

    There is 1 massive plothole and that's with the "modern" series that revolves around simba's son leading the "Lion Guard" and the daughter is still there but he has a son in the spin-off series. So like what the fuck? Idk plothole 💯

    the amount of sudden cuts to blasting music makes this video more like an obstacle course of jumpscares than a film review. consider trying to use less yelling maybe? thanks. also, a lot of the criticisms seem to be based on just the fact that the movie's a disney sequel. i don't know if you were actually trying to be sarcastic, but delivering your serious points and jokes in the exact same tone makes it sound like you genuinely think "tlk 2 does this pretty well, but oh wait, nvm, it's a disney sequel so it can do no right." try to value movies based on their actual merits instead of what their wikipedia infobox says

    To be fair, the only reason the outsiders look different is because of their lifestyle, including all the violence and whatnot. Literally all of them are borderline emaciated. So Kiara isn't wrong when she points out there are no differences.
