  • Hi, this 'trying to fix' video shows me attempting to repair a faulty quartz Casio watch 1330 MTP-1164.
    Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
    I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
    Many thanks, Vince.

    Thank you so much! Today I found an old watch from my childhood collecting dust. Popped in a fresh battery only to find out the hands were misaligned. With your incredibly detailed video I was able to realign them first try! And I just realized I've watched several of your videos in the past few months. I'm subscribing immediately.

    Hey Vince, yes, you can coat it in various ways, you can do electrolysis and give it a coat of steel, nickel, silver, gold or any other metal you want (for steel for example you can just use an old fork :D), or else there are special solutions to coat metals, per example you have the silver nitrate which uses a chemical reaction with no need of electricity. I have used both with good results, the chemical bath is more smooth but takes a lot longer, the electrolysis is faster but the coating usually doesn't gets even and you need to sand it to get a smooth surface.

    • @dodgydruid
      @dodgydruid 5 лет назад +5

      You used to be able to buy gold and silver dip in a jar which worked superbly if memory serves me right, you just dipped your item in and out a few times and then wiped it clean and no electricity at all. I have several Gateros plating kits here but the price of the gold solutions is crazy meaning I hoard the expensive dips but I am preparing a Slava AU10 case for a replating yet the watch works so well its a crime imho to take it apart. I am also going to muriatic acid a Vostok Komandirskie bezel and case for that rough bronze look.

    It's practically impossible to get the second hand to hit perfect everytime. Especially in these cheap movements. The gear teeth are not always perfectly spaced and\or there can be play between the teeth where they mesh so it will always be off no matter what you do. I say this with loads of experience and other watch Smith's videos. So u did very well. Great job.

      Actually Casio has it figured out with their Edifice line. Both my EFR, and EFB Edifice’s hit the markers perfectly. Not sure about what movements they use, but I imagine a cheap Miyota or Seiko Quartz. Pretty impressive as none of my other 20 watches hit the markers perfectly all the way around the dial and some are far more expensive than my Edifices. Such an underrated line from Casio.

    All quartz movements stop when you pull the crown to first position. Placing the seconds hand would have been easier if it wasn't directly on top of the other hand. Here's an order of operations for hand placement. Install the hour hand pointing at 12. Then use the crown to move it down to 3 or 6. Install the minute hand pointing at 12 them move it down to 15 or 30 minutes. Then install the seconds hand pointing at 12. Thanks for all the awesome vids.

      @@MyRetroWatches No. If you have a date complication - once you have established the rollover point (and installed the hour hand pointing at 12 like I advised), moving the hands out of the way makes no difference except to help with the installation. Think about it.

    I liked watching another amateur replace a quartz movement. I have successfully replaced 6 quartz movements. I bought 5 movements for $1.oo US each, witch means the actual manufacturing cost is 4 or 5 cents at a $1.00 retail. no wonder China produces 1.3 Billion movements a year. The irony is, the 4 with the $1.00 movement work all the time and the one I paid $8 for, stops, and when reset starts working again. The one I put the more expense movement in is a 1980s Elgin that looks like new. That movement is a PC32, read from old movement. I replaced the movement in a wood BOBO Bird watch I get lots of complements for, a cheap $25 watch. The original movement was exactly the same $1.00 movement and the swap for a new working movement was easy. I left the second hand off and it improved the look of the plane, no chapter ring dial. This little trick I learned from movado who rarely use second hands and it makes the jet black faces stylish.

    Yeay!! I’m watching this one!! Man I hope you have luck this time

    • @MyRetroWatches
      @MyRetroWatches 5 лет назад +2

      Okay so enjoyed that one mate. You did the right thing on swapping the movement. That said for £30 on eBay you can get a cheap quartz tester. I have one. It tests a pulse on the coil and also has a magnet part that you put the watch on and switch the gadget on. It wizzes the hands around like mad. This frees them up if they were jammed. Remember you can turn with the crown but if it’s the stepping rotor or just a tiny bit of dirt it will stop.
      Only cringe moment for me was your hand fitting. Using tweezers ! Metal on metal in a visible part you run the risk of scratching it or slipping onto the dial. Always use your pusher tool and as vertical as possible.
      Other than that though nicely done pal.
      The irony is I am half way through a very similar video I am making !!
      Great minds think alike

      Thanks Mike, I seen your video pop up but I haven't watched it yet. I will watch it on Tuesday :-) I did get myself one of those Quartz testers back in the summer. I should have got it out for the video to see if it would start up ticking again using the line tester thing (still don't know how it can make the hands spin so fast, thinking it is magnetic?????) BUT I would have still changed the movement out in case the old ones fails a few weeks later especially when posting to and from Thailand. It is amazing that you can buy them so cheap from a UK seller :-) I will definitely use my pushers next time for the hands. Cheers mate. Happy new year if I don't speak to you beforehand.

    Also , regarding the second hand - you can hold the tip in place with Rodico while you push the centre into place ,and you can adjust it's position by pushing it laterally ( not with tweezers , use plastic or wood) near the pivot point.

    Usually if you touch the watch crystal to your bottom lip , acrylic is warm , and glass is cold.
    You probably won't have sapphire glass in these watches , as it is a lot more expensive than mineral glass.
    You can polish the case and bracelet to a uniform finish using a dremel .
    Keep up the good work , mate.

    Also an easy way to tell sapphire from mineral crystal is to put the glass to your forehead, sapphire will be much colder to the touch. Also in this case you can just look, if there’s scratches it’s mineral, if it’s clear it’s sapphire. I love the Quartz Miyota 2035, 2115, I prefer quartz, and Miyota 2000’s are really reliable, accurate, and cheap, just as good as many Swiss movements such as the Ronda 763E for less money and without unnecessary jewels. The Miyota 2035 is the most produced movement on earth, billions have been made, and it started out as a Citizen caliber. 👌🏼 It’s serviceable too, but after 20+ years it’s probably okay to just replace it for $5. Ronda quartz movements with “Swiss Parts” stamped on the movement are actually made in Thailand. Miyota is made in Japan. 🇯🇵

    You found that with them hand lifters? I ground mine down but they are terribly made, I now use one of those elipitcal spring "presto" tools which whips them hands off cleanly, only a couple pounds so the quality isnt the best but they even have chrono hands off neatly which them levers with grinding couldn't do. I am going to invest in a set of Bergeon ones as very impressed with my Bergeon spring bar tool (which is also quite useful for hands)

  • @ashangstrom8362
    @ashangstrom8362 5 лет назад +2

    Nice one. The second being misaligned looked to me like the markings face are not 100% . There's one time in the video where you let the hand tick around and it's sitting in the right 3 position you set it to, gets out of sync with 6 I think, but comes back to 3 and there it is at you desired position again.
    Also very happy you offered to service my grandfather clock. But no worries it's only 2,30m in height and weights a couple of dozen kilo, also so old it is worth a bit. Thus should be easy, cheap and safe to ship from German to the UK an back. Would be practically no pressure on you

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  5 лет назад

      Haha :-) I wonder as well if the dial feet were ever so slightly bent and the whole movement was not in the dead center, if it would lead to the seconds hand being correct on one side of the dial and slightly out on the other.

  • @MusicalBox
    @MusicalBox 5 лет назад +1

    **Pausing at **27:27**** Just before applying pressure with the pushing tool on the seconds hand to lock it in place, maybe you can use it (the tool) to adjust the position of the seconds hand exactly where you want to be.

    I was going to showcase a Miyota 2115 in my "today's postbag" video just uploading now lol It was them Miyota movements that got me from changing batteries and straps to actually replacing Miyota movements in my Sekonda's, the inspiration though was your Tudor video was it? leading me to think "hey I can do that" and its been bumps and stuff and I prob broke more things than fixed in the beginning hehe Yet the ancient "testbed" of my shenanigans, the early quartz Sekonda Safari is still going strong save I was caught out by naughty Chinese people who were selling on ebay Miyota knockoffs or rejects with all the ones I got missing the second hand spindle so three of my Sekonda's are "sans" second hands which are kapton taped in the caseback for when I do get round to doing it :) This coming week I am rebuilding my Harley Ronda'd rose gold watch and going to try and get it all on vid, its them second hands tho... so damned fiddly.

    • @dodgydruid
      @dodgydruid 5 лет назад +1

      The low end Miyota's are pretty much unserviceable e.g the 2035, 2115s other than you can change the crystal and the capacitor and coil but for a couple pounds why have the hassle. They are lubricated at factory in a "lifetime" way, some of the fancier jewelled movements are serviceable like Seiko's and Ronda's etc, my Ronda 785 that arrived today is a 5 jewel quartz and can be serviced being a modular design, gave the jewels a dot of oil and should be good for a few battery changes.

    Can't find anywhere on the net that shows pin out for V2. Can imagine this being a popular video as I can't find a replacement V2 cable. What do you think ?

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Neil, I don't have a Version 2 but I really enjoyed doing the Version 1 fix and it is still working. I can keep my eye out on eBay for one but then I would also need the newer V2 processor (I think). It would probably end up quite expensive for just a video. Thanks for the idea though. If a faulty V2 bundle comes up then I would be keen :-)

      Hi Sean, yes when I come across a faulty one I will. The price for faulty ones is very high on eBay at the moment but when they start selling for £50-£60 then I am still interesting in them :-)

    The forces in a quartz movement are tiny compared with a clockwork one. In a quartz movement the mechanical power comes in at the fast moving end of the gear train, The gears further on, just drive the hands and are under no load. But in a spring watch the force to drive the movement comes in at the slowest moving gears, so these are all under the force of the spring grinding, slowly in their bearings.
    In other words spring watches need jewels, quartz watches can get away without.

    • @Mymatevince

      Yeah I know what you mean but I don't think these movements are really made to be serviced, and if I did find a faulty part I think it may have been as cheap to get the whole movement. The original did last over 20 years so for £3.75 delivered if it lasts another 10+ years then it is money well spent :-)

    Hey vince! I know you don’t want to fix other people’s stuff and so I was hoping we could organise me gifting an item to you? It’s a vintage, 1960’s mechanical record player:) the brand is vantage. Do some research and get back, it just needs a look over and regressing as far as I know but it’s fairly intricate and interesting

    Breitling watches should be left well enough alone as there is a small VHF or UHF Rescue Beacon in the watch therefore the watch should be sorted out by a watch repairer who is aware of what the watch has on board.

    A dab of wd40 on your finger, then rubbed over the back of the movement with the battery out, leave it a couple of day then pop the battery back in. Works 99% of the time with a quartz watch.
