The thing is, is even if you bought the disk version, when they shut the servers down, you’re then left with a physical disk that you can’t do anything with. Now unless you collect games to display them, most people would end up chucking it in the bin because you can never use it again. So it kind of is what it is 🤷🏼♂️

My mom convincing me to sell all my games as a teen is still one of the biggest regrets of my life, and the farther the game industry progresses the more I feel thet regret
its not just the crew, ubisoft did the same treatment to : Splinter Cell, Assassins Creed Liberty, Hereos of might and magic 6, and 7. But no one covered that news, but it still happened, The crew is not the first victim
These movies and shows get passed around from one streaming service to another every year. Until no one leases the content anymore, then it’s gone from digital media all together. No physical copies being made. Disgusting.
To stay within your analogy, you’re actually renting the house and the car and the owner has the right to take it back when they choose. You don’t purchase content via these gaming consoles. You purchase a license to play that can be revoked, so if you want to have access to content that is more in your control then you have to get a physical copy. The downside is that many games require a server to play because they’re online games.
This is actually old news. They said back before the pandemic, "You will own nothing and be happy." It was on the news, and social media people covered it. That's our future if we don't put our foot down. This will also include homes, vehicles, devices, etc.
A couple of months ago I sold my digital only PS5 to a friend and bought a new disc based one. I've been grabbing up physical copies of games as well. What's scary about what Ubisoft is doing is that you lose access to the Crew even if you own a physical copy. It's the same thing they're trying to do with Outlaws.
Ubisoft has lost all my support going forward, they took the Crew from me, and say I should get used to not owning my games they can GTFOH. I am done after I get the physical copies of the last Assassins Creed and Prince of Persia. Also also also Ubisoft does not even have enough games for a subscription fee. Boo Hiss Growl Eff Off!!!!!!

If we don’t own your games, we no longer have a reason to buy them at all. And you have no reason at this point as a result of that to exist. Careful what you wish for Ubisoft.
The problem isn’t that games cost 70$ it’s just now these games don’t come down in price. A 60$ PS4 exclusive would be 20$ 10 months to 2 years after release. Now you’d be lucky to see one of these games on sale for 35$.

I don’t think any people actually read the terms and conditions when you’re purchasing digital content. “ The Software is licensed to you, not sold. SIE LLC grants to you a limited, non-exclusive license to use the Software for personal use on your PlayStation system.” I know that consumers assume that you’re purchasing the rights to the game perpetually but you’re only getting a license to play and this license can and will be revoked if it makes business sense to do so. It is similar to how Netflix will tell you that there is content that will be removed from their library and encourage you to view it before it’s gone. We just have a license to view content but we don’t own it or have the right to view it perpetually even if we love it. If you want the ability to own a game or own a movie then you need to physically purchase it.

I never expected a little short video was saved from the hokage on video game preservation, but it's definitely welcomed. However, something I got to say about the holders no museum thing for video games, and I'm not going to address that there are actually a small indie museums because you already addressed that. My thing that I want to touch on and that was brought to my attention from a gun tumor of all people, specifically being Ian from forgotten weapons, is that a lot of items within museums are actually within their storage rooms and never end up on display. Daily have artifacts stored up in storage rooms that have little to no research on them whatsoever because they don't really have the time or funding for that. Most people think that it's all going to end up on display especially if it's a very very rare item, but very very rare items actually are more likely to stay in the storage room or as a bit more common items might be more likely to be displayed. And when I say common, I mean a common historical artifact that any museum could get their hands on if they wanted to. But of course it's still a historical artifact. historical artifacts that end up on display, but the more fragile it is or the less research on it there is and the less likely it's going to be displayed. And even though this was coming from a gun to her talking about historical weapons, what he was saying goes for all historical artifacts and museums. And that's not saying we shouldn't have museums or that historical artifacts should never go to museums. But unfortunately they should not all go to museums. We've all heard that famous quote from Indiana Jones it belongs in a museum. Well actually believe it or not some artifacts are really better off being in the hands of collectors. Some of them keep their collection private, but others don't mind showing it off to the public. Even here on youtube. Some people who end up doing a whole RUclips channel provided information on said artifacts and collectors items. Information that sometimes even museums don't have. Because they didn't have the time to get the information let alone the resources. I mean they're already taken care of an entire museum full of artifacts. However, in the case of media I feel like it's a little bit different. I feel like what we really need in the case of media is a library museum hybrid. a place to visit for these more historical video game artifacts that are available in cannot be picked up like any sort of media, such as the original councils. But still being able to get access to the original video games if you have the original console to yourself. Because they'll have a library right next door or attached to the museum. Heck, as of right now libraries are already attempted to preserve video games. Now there isn't as big attempt, but they are making efforts. And they're already making efforts to preserve other forms of media outside books. Such a film from DVDs to VHS tapes, to laser discs, audio tapes, audio books, and everything in between. Eventually there will come a day where you can pick up your favorite book, movie, and video game all at the same library. It'll probably convince more people to get a library card. Heck, maybe they can start doing anything where they rent out the original hardware. It'll give him a reason to preserve the original hardware and be a men for the library to make more funds. Use that funds to preserve more media. Especially the video games or even VHS tapes and DVDs to play on that original hardware. I don't know what's crazy, the fact that we're at a point where we got to preserve DVDs and VHS tapes and libraries, or that now children are going to be like what the fuck is that DVD or a VHS tape when they visit the library. 👴 Edit: this is probably only work for physical copies and at least digital copy that have an original ROM to access the main menu and at least make a fake server I guess for multiplayer games. I don't know in the case of multiplayer games and live service games, your next best bet for preservation is footage. Literally just get no commentary footage. And use RUclips as your public library for that. This specific message is to anybody out there who plays live service & multiplayer games. Video footage of it is your next best bet. So start running OBS and getting some no commentary gameplay.

Edit: this is probably only work for physical copies and at least digital copy that have an original ROM to access the main menu and at least make a fake server I guess for multiplayer games.
Been working on my physical collection for a few years now, getting the golden age of Ubisoft was the first purchases(Splinter Cell, Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon, Prince of Persia). OG Xbox era only
