This is true Gerry Rafferty....written with the mists of the Scottish hills swirling around him, and the ghosts of the glens playing the drone. No one writes Celtic music like GR. Rest in peace with your clan, Gerry. Thanks so much for the pleasure.
I'm a massive Gerry Rafferty fan. I loved every album he produced. His vocals and lyrics on each song he wrote are fantastic. Sleep well Gerry. I still enjoy listening to your albums. Your daughter Martha did a great job of Rest in Blue album and she only had your vocals on each song to go by. Up in Heaven you must be proud of what she achieved. Thanks for all the music Gerry.
Just beautiful beyond words.....one of my most-ever-loved songs made even more special now I've heard this version by one of the most wonderful singers of our times.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and pay perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and all the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.
I had not heard this beautiful song until I discovered this video. And then, after finding out that there were many versions of it, I decided to listen to several well-known artists' versions of it. I have to say, Gerry's version is far superior to anything else out there. In fact, it's absolutely mesmerizing. I can't stop listening to it. Thank you so much for sharing this!

It is typically graceful of her, and also thoroughly appropriate, that Loreena McKennitt gives credit to the poet who composed the lyrics. In the introduction to "Collected Poems of Padraic Colum" (1953) John L. Sweeney writes of Colum that "oddly enough, he will be remembered by many who (as Yeats noted) have never heard his name. At least one of his poems, "She Moved Through The Fair", with an air composed by the late Herbert Hughes, has so securely acquired the status of folksong that it has been collected as such."
@radxone I like it, you like it. That's great. Just one thing: Gerry didn't write it. It is a traditional Irish song from County Donegal which was collected c. 1922 by an Irish poet called Padraic Colum. Gerry's treatment of it is fine and sensitive and has all the Celtic feel to which you refer. Go well, radxone
Wow! I was very surprised as I don't think I have heard this for about 50 years, when my parents had it sung by Brenden O'Dowda (does that make sense?) If it was to be anyone else I wouldn't have listened to it, but delighted that I have done so to this version, from one of the few (male) music heroes of mine.
Beautiful haunting song sung by equally beautiful voice of Gerry Rafferty.

it's an old Irish song not written by Gerry, but sung like a man with Irish heritage so he could do it nothing but justice.

Listened to a LOT of versions of this haunting lament over the years, and still put this version by the late great legend at the top!
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and pay perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and all the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.

R I P Sir Gerry
Excellent as always... His return to the roots, a bit like the Welsh records by Mary Hopkin....

There is a wedding coming that most don't know about or understand Jan 29 2020
HI
The Wedding Supper of The Lamb.! Shalom to us only in Christ Yeshua.
this is awesome, sounds at the beginning a little bit Simple minds. I like all the work of Gerry Rafferty
Simple Minds based the song Belfast Child on this melody and song!
A beautiful and haunting melodic song
Not heard this before but I love it.Terrible TV & Fake Virus has its Ups Found some Great Music
That’s you back in time
yeah its a standard Irish folk ballad Buuuutttt Gerry did it no harm .....he sang it well
had no idea. I thought it was his song. Nevertheless, it's a beautiful song.
Absolutely magnificent it puts you in a beautiful place, his roots go deep
Why wasnt it released? It's good the song is from like 1700s so theres no copyright or anything like that
Because it was too long. More's the pity.
@@geoffprankett80 gerry has other long songs though
What is that punchy dulcimer sounding string thing ?
Aloha, Gerry!
Total guess - a 'symphonie' is it? Like a hurdy-gurdy sort of thing. Anyone, please?
Simple Minds based Belfast Child on this
love this, though there is a similarity with 'Belfast Child'
Same music.
doh...........................
Similarity? Belfast child is a rip off of this ancient Irish traditional ballad
Wasn't this song in Braveheart?
He loved the scottish sounding tunes
but any idea when it was recorded?
About 2010
Sandy Denny makes a good version of this classtc
SD was the unnamed female vocalist in Battle of Evermore
Partick
A stoater. Braw!
Brilliant but just short of Sandy and Fairport.
