I thought they hired Torts, whom I considered a dinosaur, to assure that they would get Bedard in the Draft. Instead, he changed his style and took the undergunned Flyers all the way to playoff contention in just 2 years. If they can make it in, even as the #2 WC, I'd say he's coach of the year, easy.

Flyers CEO screwed up by saying that publically. Its possible there wouldnt have been a suspension tacked on had he stayed quiet.

Basically, it all started when Cirelli was hit during a downtime of play by Garnet Hathaway... dude, Hathaway gets a 10 minute misconduct which gets no explanation to Torts. So that got him going ... Then to boot, the Lightning score on a power play that they were already on to make it 3-0.
The next series of play that happens is Eyssimont is tripped by Attard, but the refs make the wrong call initially and call a penalty on the Lightning. A few moments later, the refs overturn themselves and instead it's a penalty on the Flyers, the right call! So then the Lightning score on a standard rebound in front of the net put in by Point, soft goal, easy #1 power play versus #1 pk goal. Important to note here that AGAIN Torts is not given an explanation as to what happened or why it was turned over. 4-0
Immediately following the goal by Point, Torts is blowing up on the refs from the bench as he's been left in the dark for two calls within the span of 5 minutes. Torts demands an explanation. Gets ejected, it gets announced that he's ejected. Torts refuses to leave. The other 3 refs who aren't Wes McCauley go over to Torts and tell him it's time to go. Torts continues to stand his ground for what feels like 10 minutes before walking down the tunnel.
I actually feel bad for Tortorella on this one because the refs have excluded him from all judgment seemingly from the time the puck dropped. He got no explanation on some weird calls, and he starts losing players early due to that bully-tryhard mindset... Shit only gets you so deep against a skilled team though, and the Lightning are on fire tonight.
This game will be remembered as Tortorella's Nightmare. It's a master craft in humiliation. I called my dad right after it happened and we had a real good laugh, they kept showing the team from 2004 up in the box seats laughing at Torts.
    Classic.

It started before that. Attard was given a holding penalty for holding the invisible man - there was no holding by him except for holding his stick. Tampa scored in that power play.
Then the Attard tripping call came, and he barely touched the Tampa player with his arm - no knee or skate or stick pushed out to trip him. AND the other referee was calling for Tampa to be penalized on that play - don’t know what for because the call was not announced other than they decided that was a non-call.
And then the stuff mentioned by the top comment in this thread started.

I’m a huge Torts fan and it was a hilarious moment, but he probably went a little too far with what he said. Does the officiating kinda suck? Yeah it does, but you have to control your emotions if a call doesn’t go your way. He also didn’t leave the bench when he was told to, that will definitely get you fined. I don’t agree with the suspension though.

Great video and a bunch of very valid points. Still, one of the things that killed my interest in football (soccer) was how players are constantly bitching over every decision of the ref that goes against their team. And I just love how in hockey (and in rugby!) the ref is the ultimate authority. Mess with the ref - enjoy an early shower. And that makes episodes like this one even more entertaining.

There is not a single hockey fan on earth that wouldnt say the lightning came out strong and the flyers looked like shit. That first goal attard got out of the way of it, didnt even try to block it, was protecting himself, he will learn.. But then he gets called for holding. HAHAH holding, for trying to push a guy a bit in the crease. Holding, no. Goal 2. Then Ersson does let in a softie. Then attard again for a trip that was nowhere near a trip in a million years. In fact, it was a dive. He literally dove. He's also known for diving. Goal 4. Then a little shove that is so common in the nhl it's silly, gets a 10 minute misconduct. I mean there's nothing else to say. Torts did the right thing in his protest. All of that was sheer bs. Doesnt matter how the Flyers were playing at that point the calls were silly. And the ejection was just a decent ref protecting his other shit ref and totally undeserved for torts. The suspension, just more nhl bull. We must support the refs durrrr. This game was a 10 minute 50 second travesty of everything gone wrong.

I hate when people say things like, "The refs have no accountability." Believe me, there are things that happen behind closed doors when an official screws up. And nobody feels worse about it than they do when they get it wrong. They're human beings. They make mistakes. And they do their best to never make the same mistake again.

I'm not normally a fan of slanted reffing, but getting the chance to watch Torts lose it makes it 100% worthwhile.
If I was the commissioner I'd tell the refs to do their best to get John to snap any chance they get, just for the views. And maybe work out an advertising deal with a pharmaceutical that sells blood pressure medication.

While in principle I agree that Refs need to be held accountable, in practice I am not sure how you will be able to do this in a reasonable way. This could devolve in to refs having to justify every call and missed call in a game, because we’re do we draw the line? What call is egregious enough to be questioned and what call is not.
I don’t see anyway that this could be implemented without pissing off some party.

Oh, Wes was pretty outline without knowing everything Torts said. What’s more out of line is that fine + 2 game suspension. That said, as a Bolts fan, I would’ve died if he decided he’d still be “on the bench” after leaving by joining the ‘04 team up in their box mic’d to talk to his Assistant Head Coach. What’s Wes gonna do? Make him leave twice? It’s not like Torts would’ve been on the bench!
