  • A sermon delivered by C.H. Spurgeon, Thursday evening, October 29th 1885.
Spurgeon shows us our need of God. The Lord alone can turn our eyes away from sin and give us life. He alone can work in us ‘to will and to do of His good pleasure’ (Philippians 2:13).
Spurgeon refers more than once to the words that Bunyan heard, when he was a young man, as he was playing a game of ‘Tip Cat’, on the Lord's day, on the village green at Elstow, Bedfordshire: “Wilt thou leave thy sins, and go to heaven? Or have thy sins, and go to hell?”

From 18:52 -19:13 possible to misunderstand this 'coulda, shoulda, woulda' implication with the forbidden fruit. This event set in motion the necessary conditions for mankind to ultimately be accepted into Gods' family!!!! It seems there are many people that have a difficult time understanding this. I was also stymied until I started praying as per Johns' Gospel for guidance by the Holy Spirit. It took me some five decades to get 'The Message'.

Jerusalem Bible 'Avert my eyes from lingering on inanities'......139 years later Spurgeon would have so much more to say it is likely this sermon would become some dozen or more sermons. Anecdotally, a documentary of Amish or Mennonites in Northern Mexico had a scene of a mother with small children come to town for necessities and treating the children to a hamburger. At the restaurant the children were mesmerized by the television. Also, a recent 'ruling' by the U.S. surgeon general declares shootings to be a 'public health crisis'. Spurgeon mentioned reading news as a part of his sermon but today we need include hearing of these things on radio as part of 'seeing'. The verse Ephesians 2:2 "....prince of the power of the air..." might have a further interpretive aspect regarding our knowledge of radio waves. Not certain as the first clause of the verse seems to be in past tense.

@@ShermanMays-fw8ko And the print industry too. I've read where publishers would print anything they could get away with just to increase circulation. And then all the tabloids and trashy magazines. Spurgeon tried countering some of the nonsense in print during his lifetime but he was overwhelmed and some of his peers were even opposing him from what I have read and even his own flesh and blood son.
