      @@fisi That's nice for users, but might not give enough revenue for the company down the line.
      That said, Resolve is probably a small part of Blackmagicdesign income, and my guess is they earn more from their hardware. Which is probably a reason they can give away/sell Resolve so cheap.

    You know when the CEO said “ you use the free version, but if you become successful and start making money then maybe you might buy a software or a panel” I laughed out loud because that is exactly what I did. Start with a free version, then bought studio (these single best software buy) and today I bought the micro panel.

    Black Magic Desing is business magic. They understand perfectly the economic weight that means starting to work and making it easy from the first moment. The free software is functional with a relative difference from the paid one. They include licenses with many products that reduce the cost in some way, even if you can get more than one license and sell them that are not used, clean and legal. Updates with the best third-party software included. And all at a ridiculous price compared to other software of this level, like Photoshop. Empathic and human. A real and intelligent attitude.

    Looks Like a Good Idea. Many freelancers and small production outfits want their own perpetual licence, but larger production companies need variable numbers of editors depending on what they are doing. So it makes sense for them. You may have 1 or two full-time people but expand out to 10 or more for a few months for a project and then back down to 1 or 2.

    That might be an option for me at some point in the future, to test-drive the studio version, but not right now. Not sure I'd see much difference with the hardware I'm currently using. There are several synth plugins that do that and it's great. You can pause your payments and not lose your progress, so you don't lose that investment even if you stop paying for a while. The companies that do that are in the same category as BMD for me. Companies that understand a lot of their customers don't have money to throw around and might turn to other means to get that software and instead they just make it easy for those customers.

    It’s not a bad way to get users to try more advanced features and then hope they decide to either stay on rental or go on up to full version but I can’t see it being particularly useful in the long run considering the actual product is already pretty low cost at $300. Most would just rather buy the product and get it over with. I understand that Grant is anti-subscription model (and that is why Resolve has such traction and user loyalty now) but in order to keep improving the product by paying employees and generate a profit, they will likely have to go to some subscription model. We just have to hope that they understand that going the Adobe way of $50/month is entirely too expensive and $10/month for personal creators is reasonable. I don’t see this subscription model being a thing in the near term though.

    I would love a rent-to-own option like a lot of plugins are doing with expensive digital equipment, synthesizers, or VST. I feel like more customers would purchase a rent-own-license with pause or cancel options for if they fall on hard times, then start up when back on their feet. Make the rent-to-own option a little more expensive than the flat-rate price and they would probably be rent/selling a lot more DaVinci Resolve licenses.

  • @TimelyAdventure

    Like the options but it’s scary to think it could go full subscription at some point and that maybe we’re on some sort of slippery slope. Due to the price itself for davinci resolve studio, this is the very only software, where I would like to pay a monthly subscription instead of being stuck with the free version due to the price point.. So, I had a look at that "trick" and than I saw, I would have to pay 30 bucks per month!?!? Seriously? I'm sorry, but I'll stick with the free version... 30 bucks per month is just what!?... I would be fine with 15 bucks but with 30 bucks per month I could buy the whole studio version within 2 years..

    • @CameraTim
      @CameraTim 2 месяца назад +1

      The only reason the rental option exists is because production houses were requesting a feature like this that can enable many more users onto the Studio version for a short period of time for a significantly lower cost. So for example, if a production studio needs five editors, and the project will last for 2 months, instead of paying $1,500 for five Studio licenses, they just rent for a total of $300. It's the same concept with camera/gear rentals. Instead of paying tens of thousands for a camera body, you can pay several hundred or a couple thousand (depending on varying factors) to get the camera for just the duration you need it to allow for a much more efficient production cost.

      The Adobe model is a rip off. Subscriptions for software are not acceptable and should not be supported. This is why so many have left Adobe.

    What a strange business model - making money by not annoying the customers or trying to nickel & dime them to death. Just kidding! Grant Petty seems to have a pretty good handle on things. There is a clip where he says, in essence, use the free version, learn it, and if you end up making money, think about buying Studio. So don't feel bad about using the free version.
    Why buy Studio? It has some cool features to help you work faster and better, even if you are just an amateur youtuber. If you are a wood-working hobbyist, you could do everything with hand tools. Or for a few hundred bucks, you can get a power saw and electric drill, and have more fun in less time with better results.
