not sure why the other businesses along there think this will help. It makes foot traffic much more difficult without the pedestrianization. I help at a charity shop along there, and our donations have plummeted through the floor, and sales are down too since this road opened. It's not just the road, but the ludicrous way it's actually been designed. The way the junction's been changed at the bottom of prospect hill/Worcester Street has caused massive confusion now that people can't turn straight into the road anymore. They're just not coming onto the road anymore to drop off donations, they're going elsewhere because so few people have any idea of the absurd layout. Further to that, making that one short street (Marlborough Street?) two-way has removed the disabled parking in that area. The new road has completely inadequate parking (Small sections with 20 minutes only, which is nigh-on useless) for customers, footpath widening and the cycle lane have made it difficult for people to pull up to visit shops at the one-end. The only reason this road was put through is because access to the rear of a lot of Worcester Street shops are due to become inaccessible for loading when the new apartments are starting to be built on the Bromsgrove Street car park next year. The road is to provide loading for the shops who will no longer be able to load from the rear anymore when that happens, it was never put though to make things better for the town centre itself. There should have at least been a considerable article in the paper explaining the new layout and how to navigate it properly.
I am also curious as to whether this is what put the Town Fryer out of business after 40 or so years, due to the disruption and removal of so much parking in that area. Given that BetFred next door to it closed down not long after, there is a pattern present.
Could people please make an extra effort to support the charity shops on Worcester Street at the moment, they've all been hit so hard by this. Some are open on Sundays too, which is a good time to drop donations off as it's so much quieter. The shops really could do with extra support at this time.
