    I'm a bit older. And, an American of Gaelic decent. But I really want to learn to play this game. But I have a question.
    As an American of Scots/Irish decent. Would it be disrespectful to my ancestors to make a hurley out of an American wood, such as, Ironwood?
    It's the wood primarily used by our woodland tribes of the eastern united states. That or, hickory? Both very strong and durable woods.

    • @maceire64
      @maceire64 Год назад +1

      Don't overthink it mate. Ash is preferred wood, but if you have a hardwood with similar weight and strength it should be fine. you'd be surprised how much the flex during the strike. Also it's the right weight. Too heavy a hurl will be hard on your wrists. The swing is predominately in the wrists. I have heard of gus here in Ireland starting to make hurls from Bamboo, for sustainability

    • @CelticHound357
      @CelticHound357 Год назад +1

      @@maceire64 I do have a tendency to overthink things. LoL Thanks for the reply and will stop overthinking it. I thought of Hickory because it's what we use for our baseball bats. Sooo. I've never worked with Ash, so might be interesting. Now to see where I can find a nice piece.

    Which is better plastic or wood hurl?

    • @PlayHurling
      @PlayHurling  9 лет назад +1

      McBows N'Arrows It depends on where you plan to store your hurl. If you choose to use a wooden hurl, you’ll need to maintain the moisture level for the hurls elasticity. If the wood dries out, then it’s more prone to breakage. I use a fiberglass hurl because I live in an apartment with no access to a garden and a wooden hurl would dry out in my apartment.

    Just learned about a game with a version still played after 3000 years! This is very tribal and evolving slowly. Very brutal still. But as a voluntary means to community spirit it has it's place. If the hurler restrains physical injury towards other hurlers the game has more sport. There needs be an elimination of vengence replaced with honour. Watching Irish Hurley I'm surprised more players aren't hospitalized. 😷👍

      It's only pain, big deal. If you don't learn how to cope with pain you turn out weak. If you keep trying to soften everything, eventually boxing is going to be two guys in the ring playing Go Fish.

      Just read the GAA site : history and evolution of Hurling. 1884 is correct in that Micheal Cusak founded the Gailec Athletic Association and began to standardize the rules and regulations of today's sport. 😷👍
      The game dates back before the Roman conquest by a millenia.
