I'm impressed by how many of you have mentioned scrub radius. It is a concern to me but I did not explain it in the video for simplicity and also thought no one would understand. I guess I was wrong lol.
I am just happy too see content that they actually will fit for 16". Many big brake kits (ok, these are not that big) mention that one needs to use 17". I live in Nordics, and I need my 15" or 16" winter tyres, as there's no 17" proper winter tyre option in size that would fit Fiesta ST. I can get 205/45R17 from Continental, but those are super expensive size and hard to find, 215/45 would be easier, but likely won't fit at all.
Love the vids Steve. Always in for a challenge it seems. Wonder how you will like the EBC brakes. Found a great secondhand deal myself on a Ksport 304 BBK. Fits nicely with 20mm spacers on standard wheels and good for the 16" winterset I hope too. For track use I found a 25ET 17" set which clears the brakes nicely without spacers. Keep going making those vids
Wouldn't it be best to run the 16's with a 3-5mm spacer and spend the extra on tyres when needed. My concerns with the 15's and a 25mm spacers is that the scrub radius will be way out messing with your tuned handling. Also the thought of widening the track by 50mm just using spacers, won't the wheels poke like mad and upset the balance unless you also do the rear? Not wanting to shut down your plans just hoping to get some insight
Hi. Yeh I will have a pretty bit positive scrub radius with them. It's not ideal but it can still work. Il probably get more torque steer and some wandering on braking. It's something I did want to avoid but il try it and see how it goes
i work for an engineering company and ive had people bring wheels in for the inside diameter turning out so they will fit over the caliper. i guess it all depends on what colour trousers you wear i guess lol. great vids ste keep them coming.
So a rule of thumb is, the bigger the wheel the better the brakes fit? My friend got the 330mm kit and we are scratching our heads as to what offset the new wheels should be. I have the fullrace A from Braid on et40 7x17 and on my 300mm tarox kit it fits perfectly, you can even fit an extra finger. But I don't think the EBC's will fit under an ET40 wheel. Our goal is to not install spacers. By estimate, do you think that ET35 would be enough?
Hi Steve, just caught up on watching all your video's from YBO & ONO up to present day, have enjoyed it all immensely, it's amazing what you've achieved from that wee shed, one thing I have noticed is there doesn't seem to be an air compressor in there ? I might be wrong, I bought one a few years back on a whim and use my one almost daily, can't understand how I managed without one now, anyway I'm waffling lol, keep it up, your video's have been great and only getting better, cheers
16s are far less hassle. The scrub radius will be to big on the 15s. No doubt you would get it to work changing settings and it will handle ok on track, but it may handle like a mwchin on the road. Hard to say until you do it I spose. Nice brakes though 👍
Hey Steve, what is you current scrub radius on your wheel setup?. Do the wheels have OEM offsets?. If you add 25mm outboard to tyre tread center you could introduce some dogey handling characteristics im sure you will be able to notice. Maybe you could take some material off the caliper :-) or best going with the 16", if you looking for performance gains on track. Maybe worth buying Competition Car Suspension: A Practical Handbook. Thanks for you vids
Feel for you Steve, would look MEGA with this setup... would having it spaced out that much look silly? (As well as affecting geo) Is there an option of machining the team dynamics or speccing some custom ones from them directly? What about other rims like OZ etc
Jelly AF. That's a rad kit Steve. Keep in mind expansion with heat, generally if you have a couple of mm clearance it should be OK but it is something to keep in mind. If EBC want to donate a new kit I'll happily do many more track days and review them time after time lol. Enjoy mate.
Hi Steve, Just to add to the suggestions, could you not get a machine shop to weld up the holes in the carrier and redrill them a few millimeters closer to the hub? as a few mills on the radius will mean a lot loss spacer. Secondly, whilst you are looking at the brakes, have you thought about replacing the servo , perhaps one from a Mondeo ST or even a transit, as they are likely to give you more pressure. Keep up the great videos and keep safe Phil
hi steve. not entirely relevant but really coincidental that I've just got home from a 600mile round trip to Glasgow from Atherstone collecting a pair of Hi Spec 4 pots for my maxd out stage 2r...at a bargain price, may I add. The price was the enticement but having to have bigger brakes has finally caught up with me. it's going to transform the car! (mine fit under 15's but are being fit under 17's, so no sweat). keep up the good work pal. maybe see you at a track day
What size discs are you using fella? I wanted to fit the 300mm ebc kit under my 15" dynamic wheels but going off the clearance diagram they sent me they wont fit. Tried to contact hi spec but they don,t reply.
@@Sparkplugsteve it's going onto a race car with adjustable top mounts. So the tops will go inside the arches. I already have 25 offset wheels so that should be another 10 mm clearance.
I think it’s more a case of you couldn’t wait to get your mits on them and hold them. Than unboxing being boring hahaha! Sh!t sure I would be! Haha! Great video as always Steve. Looking forward to the diff vid. Well any vid to be fair pal. You went that little bit extra with this one, but let’s be honest 15’s was never going to sit right over them bad boys and give without giving you problems. Also hoping you decide to make the fez rwd or awd... hopefully you don’t get fed up of it before your thoughts even wander down that. Haha
I’ve been running ebc 330 brake for about a year now , the yellow stuff pads lasted about 5 laps of Blyton park and they were done , so I’ve swapped to rp1 Bit of a tip , when you come to bleed the brakes , roll up some blue roll/ paper and get all the excess fluid out of the centre of the bleed nipple The bleeder goes really deep before it seats in the calliper and your left with some above the seal, under the rubber dust cover , so when it gets warm it weeps out and makes you think they are leaking ......... just my experience with them mate 👍🏻
Spark Plug Steve haven’t has chance to get back to Blyton yet , booked for 26th sept , now with blue stuff on the rears and rp1 up front , ebc did recommend blue on the fronts too but I don’t want another track day cut short due to brakes so gone with rp1
So am et35 or et30 would fit this big brake kit with the 16 inch wheels? I wanna buy wheels and I wanna buy a big brake kit but it’s know what’s gonna fit without any clearance issues.
looks to me like it's just catching the sharp edges of the caliper, i've ground off the edges on the caliper before with good success, sound brutal but does work.
Yeh I'd also do the same but the brake pipe that joins the the 2 half's is equally close and I can't alter that. But I will fit them up again and see if a bit of shaving can reduce the spacer size to a 20 maybe
Be carefull Steve i had 25mm spacers on the front of my focus & snapped 2 passenger side cv joints just behind castle nut @ combe.think i was putting to much strain on them
I'm sure I remember one of the aet cars (Ben I think) used to run 15" team dynamics pro race 3s with a BBK without Spacers. Remember asking him and he said pro race 3s fit with BBK but 1.2s don't
Yeah pro race 3s are designed for big brakes, i need 20mm spacers on stock 17s for a 330mm revo kit but the 17 Pro race 3s go strait on with no spacers
Been looking at these, but I really want to run my 16" without a spacer to save the hassle of switching studs (they're already et35). Anyone know if the AP Racing calipers are any thinner and less likely to catch on the spokes than the EBC?
It's bigger than the 280 mm I have now. 😁 It's not just the diameter through. The disc is thicker and has better internal cooling vanes. The calipers are much larger so they dissapate the heat better . And being fully floating disc they are far more resistant to warping and cracking. But yes your disc are big boys
Sell the 15's and tyres and the money from those, buy 2 sets of 16 inch rubber, sorted 👍 saves dicking around with spacers and maybe damaging something...🤷♂️
Taking it too far out Steve , there will be no support on the hub flange , the studs are there only to stop the wheel from falling off , all the weight is on the flange , all the geometry will be cocked out again causing camber, excessive tyre wear , easier to just put the 16 inch wheels on bud , sell your old 15 inch wheels , the flange is very important for support for the wheel support
I wouldn't actually drive the car with the washers I fitted today lol. I will use bolted spacers but yes it will alter the scrub radius but camber will not change. Thanks for watching.
@@Sparkplugsteve make sure the wheel centre is still sitting on the flange of the hub or you will need to extend the flange to sit inside the wheel centre , as I said the wheel is supported by the flange
I think you will find that it is , the studs are not designed to take the weight of the car on them, they are there purely to keep the wheel attached to the vehicle , the centre of the flsnge iof any wheel hub is designed to fit inside the centre on a wheel , that is why the hole is a similar size to the wheel centre , it's not put on the wheel to put a badge on it , it's there to support the weight of the vehicle
